  1. Though I am now retired from filming and diving my large library of raw video footage still sells now and then. It is usually always a behavioral shot that sells. Standing shots tend to be boring but a unique, or even typical, behavior is what the channels are looking for.
  2. Been to the Cocos 13 times since 1992 leading many groups. This included going during the big 97/98 El Nino which really drove the large schools of hammers very deep. My guess is that you were in a similar situation with the warmer water. Very nice and appropriate music. From an editors perspective or for competitions, I would add a narration and delete several seconds off the video, especially those areas where the exposure from one but similar clip did not match the next. You have some excellent shots there. The turtles back looked just like that of many of the marble rays you see down there and filming eagle rays has always been a favorite thing to shoot. Good that you got that tiger shark. My guess is that you weren't able to get too close to it. Nice job.
  3. How do you like the GoPro Hero 4 Silver. Any reason why you went to the silver edition rather than the Black. The black is supposed to produce a higher quality footage I think.
  4. Both of these lights are in mint condition and retail for $2200. each. I have used them for two trips with no complaints or problems. My published review of them can be found at: http://www.kenstone....ht_douglas.html Batteries and charger are included. You may contact me via my home email address. BO but be realistic. Nothing is free.

  6. How many shots on the camera? What are you asking for it.
  7. Dumb question but what was the blues tune you used in your film?
  8. I have often wondered why so many DSLR and standard camcorder users do not use a hot or cold shoe monitor when taking topside video or photos to supplement their underwater shots. When filming underwater most everyone I know uses an external monitor rather that the camera's small LCD screen so why, when those DSLR LCD screens do not really enable you to see as well as you could, do users not bring along a nice 5 or 7" HD monitor to shoot with.
  9. A few weeks ago I spent a weekend uploading uncompressed video files to the company that frequently sells my clips. All files are .mov files. I was told that a great many of them came in without the .mov and simply typing that in after the clip still failed to open the files. Next time I will put the folders in a zip file and see if that works but does anyone who may use File Zilla to upload uncompressed files have any insight into the cause for the .mov extension to be removed? Thanks, Steve
  10. With the first video....amazing...how soon can I get it and spray it on the backyard deck and the Harley. Last video....dream goes poof!
  11. "If you think I am exaggerating, then have a look at Phillip Bloom's review" Could you post the url for Philip Bloom's review? Thanks
  12. You did the right thing Eric, no question about it. Suppose, however, someone bought footage from a company to use in their production. Since they paid for it, they have the right to use it. What would be the guidelines then? You always know your own photos and videos....I was watching a documentary a few weeks ago on the weather channel about what would happen if an asteroid hit the Earth, and there was my footage of some cape buffalo charging. I knew I had recently sold some Kenyan footage but it was through a footage firm....watched the credits and the firm got the credit not I. It was their right but on the amateur level as well as for posting a film on Wetpixel, what would the ruling be on that? I'm getting out of the underwater shooting business but still curious. Suppose someone bought some footage, put together a film and submitted it to the Wetpixel competition...would that be acceptable if they had the rights to the footage that they never shot? Steve
  13. SwiftFF5.. Out of curiosity, what about the Apple interface can't you abide with? Are you talking about the OS or the editing applications? Adobe Premier Pro has the same interface on a Mac as it would a PC, no? Steve
  14. Drew called it correctly. This is why I have always been so against republishing press releases....they are, for the most part, all hype. When the press release was published on Wetpixel's main page I commented that I hoped someone would write a real review after using it. As a writer I do read press releases but insist on doing my own evaluation. Granted, first person evaluations can be subjective to the writer but, at least, you are reading an article that is based on real world experience. While I have been cutting back on the article a week syndrome, I am still hyper vigilant to the great hyperbole that press releases are. I can learn more from users here regarding products than I ever can from most press releases.
  15. This is a partial letter I received from Black Magic's press relations individual.. Hi Steve - FYI on several Blackmagic Design camera updates: Blackmagic Cinema Camera Price Reduction: We have worked very hard over the last year to be able to build the Blackmagic Cinema Camera at a lower cost, and we wanted those savings to translate directly to customers to boost the creative possibilities among a wider range of cinematographers and photographers. From today the Blackmagic Cinema Camera EF and MFT models will be reduced in price to US$1,995. All orders placed that have not yet been filled can be reduced to the new lower price. The advantage of the 2.5K sensor is that it has enough resolution to eliminate the bayer resolution loss of an HD sensor, but when shooting RAW, it produces files that are not too big to store and work with easily. The full press release is below my signature. Camera Update: The new Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is now shipping, and there is a software update for it posted on our website on the support page. Users can now focus by pushing the focus button when using an active MFT lens. This makes it very easy to accurately focus. The focus peaking feature is still there, and you enable it by double pressing the focus button. The focus zoom feature is enabled by double pressing the OK button. The Blackmagic Production Camera 4K is not yet shipping, as we need some more time. Our first batch of sensors was delivered only this week, so we have not been able to complete the software for the camera. We expect to start shipping in about three to four weeks once the final software work and testing are completed. We also have several updates on associated production / post technology: HyperDeck Software 3.8: This update adds 6G-SDI support on the output for HyperDeck Studio Pro and adds on screen menus to both HyperDeck Studio models, where users can set formats and other features. New ethernet remote control support has also been added. This allows users to connect HyperDeck to a network, set the IP address of the HyperDeck in the menu and then Telnet into the HyperDeck to get control. If you type play, the HyperDeck will play and if you type stop, then HyperDeck will stop. You can get clip lists and all kinds of control functions. Additional details can be found in the instruction manual. This update is free of charge and on our website now. DaVinci Resolve 9.1.5: We have a small software update for DaVinci Resolve 9 that adds improved compatibility with Avid Media Composer 7.0 round trip, supports reel names in Final Cut Pro X XML, adds support for Avid EuControl Software Package Version 3.0, improves handling of multi track Quicktime audio files and adds improved Cinema DNG file format support. This update is available for download from our website. Desktop Video 9.7.7: This new software update now adds support for the 4K DCI modes and adds improved compatibility for HDMI on the UltraStudio 4K and the DeckLink 4K Extreme models. We have also improved support for Avid Media Composer for the UltraStudio Mini Recorder and DeckLink Mini Recorder models. This software update is available now for download from our website.
  16. At least it is a price drop and not raise. Remember that when we were all waiting patiently for the Scarlet part of that was that it was supposed to sell for $3,000.00. In the end, it was nowhere near as inexpensive.
  17. I originally met Al Chan when he signed up as a guest on a trip to the Cocos Islands that I was leading. He became a repeat client and a real friend over the years. For those who did not know him, Al was probably the most centered man I have ever met. He always seemed to be at peace with himself and he greatly enriched my life from just knowing him. I was fortunate to have been able to host him in my home when he came to San Diego to visit his son. Whether he was in Tahiti or the Coco Islands or any number of other dive spots, you could always find Al in the ship's hammock when he wasn't in the water. Al had been out of diving for the last couple of years due to illness though we kept in semi frequent touch. I only now discovered that he passed away from liver cancer last March 20th, soon after my return from Anilao with a small group. Al, you will be missed; you are missed and thank you for letting us become friends.
  18. Well Bill, did you get it? I just read the interview....sorry, I buy very little of it.
  19. Wondering what would be a good choice of a lens for this pocket camera for topside shooting?
  20. Even at Darwin and Wolf, there is plenty of sand to WB off of. However, many, including myself, WB off of white fins.
