  1. Does anyone know when Black Magic will be prepared to actually start shipping?
  2. Rack Focus is a very commonly used technique in both TV and movies. In a layman's explanation, you have something or someone in the foreground and something or someone else in the background. Rack Focus will occur when the subject in the foreground is sharply in focus but then the cameraman adjusts the focus to sharply focus the background bringing the foreground subject out of focus. It can go either way and is fairly easy to do. Productions houses will often have a focus puller do the job while the cameraman simply works the camera. Try it a few times for yourself and you will find that you can pick it up pretty quick. Know how far you have to go to focus on the background when switching from the foreground so that you don't go too far with it. All techniques and tricks are good when you don't use them too often.
  3. A British company, Crumple Pop, also makes a fish eye adjuster plug in for the Go Pros or any other fisheye lens. I works very nicely. Here is the url to my review. http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/crumplepop_fisheye_gopro_douglas.html Steve
  4. Hey Andy, Just to let you know. His video came out very well. He found the audio meters and I told him how to adjust them so the audio wouldn't distort. I gave him a small LED light to mount on his hotshoe and he shot at ISO 800 and all was well. Much thanks for your advice. Steve
  5. Much thanks for the advice Andy. I copied and pasted your answer to him. He can't find anything in the manual that mentions audio and I downloaded the manual myself to look for something but I also couldn't find it. Will lend him my H4n and sync the audio to his video for him if/and/or he doesn't get it right.
  6. All that in 3 minutes, really well done. No matter how great a film is, 3 years down the road you will see things that you will want to change but, by then, the time to move on has come. Very nice music and, you're right, it does set the ambience. Agree with all of Nick's suggestions. Never the less, loved it and it is rare that I like music videos. Steve
  7. I am asking these questions for a friend who uses the D800 for topside photo work. He has not shot video with it and was asked to shoot video in a somewhat dark club. After speaking to him, and not knowing the camera myself, I had some questions for the audio. I can lend him a shotgun mic and use the 1/8 in plug but do not know whether the D800 allows for or has any metering for the audio levels. He also wasn't sure what ISO he should use and I suggested that 800 or 1000 might be the best chance for getting a clean shoot but I very well could be wrong on this. I did download the Nikon manual and did a very quick scan of the index but saw nothing. Also assuming that the D 800 will shoot video in both 1080p as well as 720p. He doesn't know and neither do I. Anyone have any answers for this? Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Steve
  8. Great clip there. What an opportunity for you to shoot this!
  9. That's the problem, 'having the cash' not only for the housing but for the airfare weight allowances. Don't think it will fit into my carry on bag. Steve
  10. Be careful about Betas.... there is a reason why they are called betas and not alphas. They often have things that don't work as they should, bugs or other issues. If it comes with an uninstaller, great, as you might have to use it. I have been asked by a great many companies including Adobe and Apple as well as lots of 3rd party companies including Red Giant to beta test a large variety of software and it gets old. These days I just make an excuse and wait until the final version is released.
  11. To uninstall anything get either App Zapper or App Delete. Both are very inexpensive and find all those hidden caches and folders associated with the app you are trying to delete. I have been using both for years without a hitch. Steve
  12. I've been interested in this one since it was announced but not sure what lens they actually be compatible with. All brands? Guess this means also having to buy multiple ports to fit the different lens options. Would be great if Gates made a housing for it or Amphibico, Nauticam any of the better quality manufacturers.

  14. Listen to what both Drew and Davide have to say as well as Simon. You might find the transition easy enough but you might not. As Drew said, think Old School. For me, I simply could not make a comfortable transition and sold the 7D. If I were you, I would beg a dive partner with a DSLR and housing to allow you to try it on a dive, with his/her supervision, just to see how it felt to you.

  16. Looking to get one of these older cams for a friend if you know of anyone selling one in decent condition and price. Steve
  17. Had the same thing in Gansbaii Simon. Guadalupe really hadn't been 'discovered' then but have been there 3 times now. Unfortunately, what had been unique footage of GWs is now pretty common place. Now I want to film the golden blind catfish, said to be the most rare marine species in the world. However, it is in some lake in Africa about 300 ft down. Steve ps. Also need to get my first blu ring which I hope to get in Anilao in a couple of weeks. Many trips but no blu rings....yet.

  19. The circle you mention is called vignetting and is common with aftermarket lens especially when shooting macro with a shallow depth of field. Good that you found the sweet spot for you video system. Fortunately, with many of the macro critters around Puerto Galera, & Dumaguete getting close to set up a shot is not difficult. Just try to get the 'eye' in focus and the rest should be okay. While at Dumegetti, be sure to get to Apo Island and never miss the night dives where the macro action kicks things up a notch or three. I will be at Anilao, Philippines at the same time as you hoping to finally get my first blu ring octo. The Philippines isn't really 'muck' diving as it is in Lembeh but your buoyancy control down low will still be very important to avoid kicking up any sediment.
  20. Where in the Philippines are you headed?
  21. Nick, You don't say which version of FCP you are using and that might be helpful. FCP has difficulty working in native AVCHD and HDV and thus transcoding to another codec is advisable. That said, while the Apple Intermediate Codec had its day, especially with iMovie, Pro Res is the best choice. However, since your original media is what it is, there would be no reason or advantage for you to transcode to Pro Res 422HQ. Just transcode to Pro Res 422 and that is all you need. If you have already imported the footage in its native format, if in FCP Studio, you can batch export all the clips at one time to Pro Res. If you are using FCPX, just check the 'Optimize' box in your preferences and it will do the work for you. Steve
  22. Additionally, now selling a new Editor's Keys Vocal booth with stand and mic and shock mount. I have two and love the one I use as it does an incredible job of isolating my voice when doing voiceovers. Just don't need two of them.
  23. Is there a reason why you turned off ProTunes? Nice clips there. Steve
