  1. Jean, What about the Nikon 12-24 DX zoom? The front element does not move during zooming, therefore (IMHO) the nodal point does not change. Or am I missing something?
  2. Does anyone out there (commercial or otherwise) have an Aquatica 6 inch Dome Port (Bayonet attachment for S2, N90S etc housing) Aquatica Part Number 18406? Thanks
  3. I also was at the class. (I was the "Lone Aquatica"). John summed up the week very well, especially the tight schedule. I did Stephen's film only class a couple of years ago, and recall having time for a siesta between lunch and class. Not so this time! Most days I had upwards of 3 Gigabytes to upload from my Microdrives to the hard disk for processing in Photoshop. And yes, I bought my S2 to get TTL. By day 2 my strobes were set to manual and remained that way for the rest of the week. Oh well...
  4. The dive resorts such as Buddy's, Lions, Captain Don's etc all have a regular evening schedule to dive the Town Pier. They still need to get permission from the Harbour Master, but that is always granted except when a large ship is tied up at the pier. A word of caution about Bonaire beach diving with a housing: be real careful about the entries and exits. I got hit by an unexpected wave caused by a boat wake and me and my S2 housing rolled over in the surf 2 or 3 times. Fortunately nothing was damaged except my pride. Bruce Dickson
  5. I go with the decorator crab theory. Try sending a copy to Leslie Whaylen at REEF (leslie@reef.org). She has identified some weird critters for me over the years. Bruce Dickson
  6. The bad news is that it will be August 14 before I get it wet. The good news is that I will be at the Stephen Frink Underwater Digital Photography class, so I should be able to get some feedback from the FrinkMeister himself. Bruce Dickson
  7. Jean, Merci bien! So the 18-70 zoom gear is different to the 12-24 zoom gear (18696)? I tried my 12-24 gear on my 18-70 and it seems to fit perfectly. Am I missing something? Also, can you confirm which extension ring is needed with the 8 inch dome on the S2 housing? Again, my 12-24 extension (18456) seems to work ok. Thanks, Bruce Dickson
  8. My 18-70 arrived last night and I can now answer my own question. The zoom gear for the 12-24 is a perfect fit on the 18-70. I tried it in my 8 inch dome port, and it needs the same extension ring as the 12-24. The 18-70 changes barrel length as it zooms, and with a diopter installed it comes dangerously close to the inside of the dome without an extension.
  9. Does anyone know if Aquatica has produced a zoom gear for the 18-70 or will one of the existing gears fit? I tried a search with no results, and e-mailed Aquatica with even less success. Bruce Dickson
  10. Hi Peter, I use the 12-24 DX lens on my Fuji S2 behind an Aquatica 8 inch dome, and I am getting incredibly sharp results edge to edge at all zoom settings. I don't know if Ikelite makes an 8 inch dome, but I believe its true that "the bigger the dome the sharper the image". Also, I do not need to use a diopter with this setup. Say Hi to Lynn for me. Bruce Dickson
  11. Hi Linda, Ocean Optics in London England manufacture a custom port for Sea&Sea that accepts the Z22 Ring Flash. I bought one last year and bonded it to an Aquatica extension ring to make a port for my Aquatica S2 housing. The Ocean Optics port is good quality, and has a glass lens rather than acrylic. The only drawback is no manual focus. I seem to remember it cost around $150. You can find Ocean Optics at www.oceanoptics.co.uk Bruce
  12. Bummer! I thought it was too good to be true.
  13. A friend sent me the attached image with the following comments. I think it is genuine. I'd love to know what lens was used! EVER SEE AN ICEBERG FROM TOP TO BOTTOM? This is awesome! This came from a Rig Manager for Global Marine Drilling in St. Johns, Newfoundland. They actually have to divert the path of these things away from the rig by towing them with ships! Anyway, in this particular case the water was calm & the sun was almost directly overhead so that the diver was able to get into the water and click this pic. Clear water huh? They estimated the weight at 300,000,000 tons. And now we also know why they say one picture is worth a 1000 words ... Now we also know why the Titanic sank!!!
  14. Does anyone know where I can get a Sea&Sea Sync Cord repaired? One of my cords has developed a really strange problem. It works fine on manual, but when I set the strobe to TTL it quenches instantly with a "good TTL" indication regardless of the exposure, even with the flash tubes covered over. I have continuity checked the cable and there appear to be no open or short circuits. Another cable works fine, and this cable fails the same way on 2 different strobes. Bruce Dickson
  15. I hope this isn't a dumb question, but here goes....I know how to subscribe to a thread, but is there a way to subscribe to an entire section (like "Digital SLR's and Housings" for example) so that am notified whenever a new topic is posted there? Bruce Dickson
  16. Have you tried Stephen Frink at www.stephenfrink.com? His website lists rentals on Seacam housing for D1X. Thats about as non-consumer as you can get! Bruce Dickson
  17. Marjo, Thank you! You expressed so well what I was trying to say about post processing vs getting it right in-camera. Now if I could just get Blue Cross to pay for an anger management class in Palau I'd be all set. Bruce Dickson
  18. I strongly agree with Giles's comments. I get annoyed when I see or hear of digital UW Photographers who take mediocre images and then fix them in Photoshop. Exposure adjustment and cropping is all I ever do in post processing. Maybe this needs to be moved to its own thread..... Bruce Dickson
  19. Diving with Stromness Diving Centre on Triton, haven't decided which hotel yet.
  20. Looking way ahead, I am planning a trip to Scapa Flow in the Orkney Isles of Scotland for August 5th to 14th 2005 on behalf of my local dive store. Space is limited to 12 divers. Trip cost will be around $2795 including round trip airfare from the US East Coast. See http://home.nc.rr.com/bdickson/Scotland/Scotland.html for more information. Bruce Dickson
  21. Looking to see how many Wetpixellers are using the Inon Z22 Quad Flash, and any experiences, comments etc. I have had mine for just over a year and I like it so much I use it all the time for macro. Bruce
  22. Does anyone know when the new 18-70 DX lens will be available in the US? I called B&H today and they did not have a date. Bruce
  23. James, So it looks like there is nothing startlingly new in the S3 to make me want to run out and upgrade from my S2? I think I'm right in saying that the CCD resolution is the same on both, and that the S3 adds the advantage of no more CR123's, but loses TTL capability? Bruce
  24. My dive group are thinking of a trip to Scotland in the summer of 2005, primarily to dive Scapa Flow. Does anyone have any experience or suggestions of where to stay, what operator to use etc? Also, any other recommended diving areas in Scotland, as we probably would want to spend 2 or 3 days diving Scapa and then move to a different location. Bruce. (Yes, I was born in Scotland, but I've never dived there!)
