  2. Headed to Rivera Maya (Barcelo Maya) in March, and busy setting up dive sessions. One of Dressel's operations works out of the marina at our resort- fairly expensive but very convenient. Feedback through the dive boards is fairly favorable, but definite ups and downs. It appears serious photo work would be seriously hampered- I could survive taking my compact unit vs. my DSLR. It also appears they separate new divers/classes out, but not positive.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. The cost is not the most important issue, for my daughter and I are with three other non-divers, and the convenience of being able to slip away early and be back by twelve after a 2 tank dive is very convenient.

    Thanks,

    Terry

I also strongly recommend Dive Adventuras. I was there two years ago and had a great time. Open water as well as Cenote diving. Great service and great people.

  3. I got to play with my 1 year old nephew who is all smiles, bought a ring for my girlfriend, was told that I will officiate my sister's wedding next year, shot a propane tank and made a 30 foot fireball 80 yards away, petted a domesticated turkey's gobbler, received a lens for my Nikon FM SLR along with an electric winder, bought myself a 3D Printer (going to print a copy of those ULCS arms and maybe sell them), and am planning on getting my cave diving cert. in FL this spring.

More experiences than material goods but I am super happy about it.

What....no one got a really disgusting tie? Or is that just me.....Happy New Years folks, keep it safe and sober.

  4. My wife & I are heading to Naples, Florida next March for a week with her brother & sister-in-law. I am planning on getting some scuba diving in rather than sitting around drinking beer and playing boce. Looking for some recommendations on dive shops/charters and dive sites. Thanks.

  5. Thanks Bob. I read about magic filters and I have a GoPro so the housing lens cover is curved so a gel filter won't work. Also, I'm looking to spend under $10 and the magic's I found were $60+ I think. I really just want to know what shade of red is used for 30 feet of diving in grenish/blue water because I can go with different manufacturers and find the best price and fit for my camera.

OK, I understand. Where are you diving in the Atlantic, just out of curiosity. I dive off the North Carolina coast and the viz is not as good as yours in the photos.

Is the Oly 50mm a 2.8f macro, as indicated, or is it possible that it is a 2.0f macro? Thanks.

  8. My daughter has the good taste to marry a diver from Australia. He had he good taste to invite me to go diving with him in the Carib. this October. We are considering various islands. St Croix seems interesting..neither of us has been there, they are running a $450 special to bring the cost lower, easy for us to reach, etc.

Clearly, the pier at west end is appealing. But for a one week visit, better to stay near Cane bay? West end? Somewhere else?

suggestions on who to dive with?

    note:

We are less interested in wrecks that are after 1950 for diving.

    thanks for any suggestions.

    dave

    Dave,

I was in St Croix this past March and made two dive with Cane Bay Scuba. Incredible viz and a really superb dive operation. Check out their website http://www.canebayscuba.com. They have some beach front cottages and some pretty good package deals. St. Croix is not that big of an island, so, if you rent a vehicle getting around the island won't be that bad. One other good thing about St. Croix is there is only room enough for two cruise ships at the port. St. Thomas can handle up to six. I'm looking forward to going back next March.

    Good luck!

  9. I have two Canon A-1 bodies in very good condition with an assortment of Canon lenses, a Canon power winder, two non Canon flash units and an assortment of filters. I haven't used any of these items in quite sometime and I don't plan to in the foreseeable future. Any recommendations on how I can sell/dispose of these items? E-mail me if you would like a list of what I have. Thanks!

  11. Hey guys,

I'm somewhat new to underwater video and I hope someone can offer me some advice on what i should buy. I have $1000-1500 budget to spend on a dedicated underwater video camera. I don't have a need to do any stills so a focus on video is fine.

I currently use a GoPro HD for my underwater films and i've outgrown the limited video quality. Even though it's 1080p 60fps the quality just isnt there and everytime i go down i feel like im missing out on really capturing the moment.

I need the camera, a housing and lights...

I know $1500 bucks isnt much for this sort of thing.

    What would you guys recommend?

    Thanks....

    Seth Diggs

    Seth,

You might try getting hold of Ryan at Reef Camera & Video, just do a google. They are in Florida and have just about whatever you need based on your budget, both new and used equipment. Good hunting!

  12. I'm taking a Caribbean cruise in May with a bunch of non-diving family members. While there I'd lover to to seize the opportunity to dive in a couple of the ports. Most of the info sources I trust (wet pixel, undercurrents, etc) don't really discuss one day diving excursions. The general web has a lot of info – but it seems to cater to newbie divers. I'd also like to avoid booking directly w/ the cruise ship if at all possible.

Any advice or suggestions as to (1) which of these places have good diving – and (2) operators that would not treat me like a second class citizen, cattle or a beginner - coming off of a cruise ship? Thanks in advance!

    PHILIPSBURG, ST. MAARTEN

    ST. JOHNS, ANTIGUA

    CASTRIES, ST. LUCIA

    BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS

    ST. GEORGE'S, GRENADA

    ORANJESTAD, ARUBA

    WILLEMSTAD, CURACAO

    KRALENDIJK, BONAIRE

I just got back a few weeks ago from a cruise. St. Maartens was one of my dive sites. Fair at best. Good viz, but nothing really exciting to see. Focker is right on with his recommendations. As far as Grenada goes, I haven't dove there yet, but I have been to the island twice. I strongly recommend you grab a taxi when you get off the ship and go to the Aquarium Restaurant. There were six of us and the driver came back and picked us up at 3:00 p.m. We would have stayed longer but the ship was leaving port at 5:00 p.m. Round trip taxi fare was $60.00 for all of us. And yes, the van was air conditioned. It's about a 20 minute drive. It opens at 10:00 a.m. and you can rent a lounge chair for $6.00 for all day. Great little beach with plenty of natural shade and crystal clear water. Kind of a private, out of the way spot. Very few tourists! The restaurant has a nice bar ($3.00 for local beer) and a really nice menu for lunch. When you get there, just walk down the driveway, through the dining area and enjoy! Here's their link: http://www.aquarium-grenada.com/

  13. I'm lucky in that Prescriptiondivemasks.com is physically located about a mile from my house, in a little strip mall, next door to Baskin and Robbins.

Any suggestions as to which brand / style of mask, or characteristics of a mask, work best for adding the "reader" capability. I know Prescriptiondivemasks.com sells masks (upon which to apply the "reader" capability). Should I buy one of their masks - or bring in my own? Which brand/style of mask have y'all had success with?

If you're happy with the mask you have now, call them and ask if they can add the "reader" lens to your mask. That's what I did and they said "no problem".

  14. Been using these folks for many years and have always been satisfied.

    http://prescriptiondivemasks.com/

    Steve

Just sent my Hollis M-1 to these folks this week. Have tried the diveoptix inserts with unsat success. Left lens kept coming loose even after repeated cleanings and installations. Talked to the folks at prescription dive masks and was sold. Very positive and informative. Great web site also. Be sure to check out their "how to dot your pupil" and "how to draw your bifocal line" on their website. My wife got a little carried away with the sharpie and felt it necessary to include my eye brows as well!

  15. Hey guys I am planning a diving trip (December) away from Miami I have a question! The Caymans it appears that those little beautiful island have been battered by several hurricanes.

Is the diving there still good? I would like to hear from you all. in particular those that been there recently. Thanks a lot

    Oceantony

At the top of the page, click on "RESOURCES" and then the "MEMBERS MAP". You can zoom into the Grand Cayman Island and click on the only people figure that's there. The name is "Giles". You can then send her him a message and probably get real time info on the conditions of the islands and diving. Good luck and hope you have a good trip.

  16. hello everyone! my names cody n im a marine stationed out in japan! ive always loved photography and diving but just never put the two together lol but this is where yall come in! i havent the first clue as to what i need for anything when it comes to underwater photography! so tell me what i need!! and my current camera is a nikon coolpix p100 but im not sure what housing i wud want to get for it! thank u so much for ur help!!

    Hello Cody,

I, too, strongly recommend Martin Edge's 4th Edition of "The Underwater Photographer". You can order it on Amazon.Com. As far as a camera spend some time researching here on this forum and check out what is available at your base exchange. You'll save some money that can be spent on other items of underwater photography. You will definitely want a camera that will allow you to use an external flash/strobe unit. Using the flash unit that is on a camera will light up all the small particles (called backscatter) between the lens and whatever you are photographing. Makes for a very frustrating and messy photograph.

By the way, how much longer will you be in Japan and is the Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station in your future? Good luck and welcome to Wetpixel!

  17. I'm in need of replacing my Sony Vaio but am totally confused as to what to buy. I use a laptop for all of my computing needs so I need something fast without breaking the bank. I'm looking to spend $1,000 - $1,200 and am looking for another PC. I was just issued a new MacBook Pro for work and love it but I don't want to re-purchase all of my software plus my images are all stored on external hard drives formated for a PC.

So the big question I have concerns the processors. Is Intel better than AMD? What about Dual Core versus Core i7? Also, any recommendations on brand? I really like my Sony and wouldn't mind another one but they are pricier than others I've seen.

Any advice as to what specs I need for heavy photo usage. In all seriousness pretty much anything I buy will be faster than what I have now but I'd like the fastest I can afford.

    Andy,

I just ordered an HP with an Intel Core i7 processor and a few other bells and whistles. Do a Yahoo search of "dv7-4070us" and use the LogicBUY.com/hp-dv7-select-deal link. You can save up to $370.00 on an i7 and configure the laptop how you want it. Just make sure you configure it so it will qualify for the discount coupons offered. The Intel website indicates that an i7 processor is best suited for photo editing. This offer expires 9/13/2010, but they keep extending it. Check it out and good luck. Shipping is free also.

  18. I hope the little turtles at those Cenotes are cooperative for you. They would be quite cute on video. Their shell growth makes them look like moving bushes with legs and head.

And I am indeed jealous of the lovely view you were having outside the dive shop and the views you are having/will have on the trip.

    Hey Eric,

I was there this past April. The guides forgot to tell us about the helocline. As I approached it, I thought my masked had fogged up. Took my mask off to clear it the "fog" and by the time I got my mask back on and cleared I was in the helocline and everything was a total blurr. I though to myself, "what the hell did I do to my mask?", and then realized what it was that I was in. Had a few words with the guides when we surfaced, everyone got a chuckle out of it and I still smile when I tell that story.
