  1. Overview: Indonesia enjoys the most biodiverse ocean environments on the planet. Unfortunately, it is also the world's largest shark fishery, having all but emptied its waters of a valuable resource: its sharks. Raja Ampat in Eastern Indonesia is perhaps the crown jewel of this biodiverse region, but its shark populations have been ravaged and its manta populations are now under siege. Shark Savers is working with the Misool Eco Resort, Conservation International's Indonesia Marine Program, WildAid, and other NGOs and eco-tourism companies on a new initiative to convince the Raja Ampat government to prohibit all fishing of sharks, mantas, and mobulas.   2. I've posted the latest instructions from Stefanie Brendl as well as an example letter written by Mark Thorpe. They've managed to turn this around and were able to get the bill passed out of the House Judicial Committee yesterday!! Now it's going to be voted on by the full House -- probably Tuesday.   4. My husband, Lupo, shot this blenny a few days ago in Triton Bay. We haven't found it in any ID books on the boat, but we haven't had access to a Humann / DeLoach book yet. It may also be that other ID pics of this blenny don't show him out far enough to reveal that beautiful little bowtie pattern. It's really adorable! Here's an image.   7. Yes another petition!!! But it just takes a minute and an impressive # of signatures can hopefully give some weight to the position of those of us who asking for their protection. Here it is -- it's only been up for a little over 24 hours and already is up to over 1200 signatures. D'Alessandro Office Complex, 2295 Victoria Ave. Oct. 20th - Dania Beach, FL - 6pm -8pm - IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame and Museum, 300 Gulf Stream Way. The FWC representatives there count the number of people present at the meetings and how many people speak. It really does make a difference! And to give an idea of why this issue is so crucial, I think the following comment made by Walt Stearns says it best: Walt, as many of you know, is the person who actually discovered the lemon shark aggregations in Florida and has been studying them with Dr Gruber for the past several years. He made the following comment: An added note: Even NOAA, in a recently published a risk-analysis paper (Cortes et al 2008), reported the lemon sharks (Negaprion brevirostris) is the most vulnerable of all the large coastal sharks to overfishing. To the commercial fishermen, Florida's lemon shark aggregations can be turned into the literal version of shooting fish in a barrel. If you need to see an example, look to the schooling hammerheads in the Sea of Cortez. They, for intensive purposes have been eradicated from that part of the world through commercial practices. Fortunately for schooling hammerheads, there are still alternative populations remaining in parts of the world like the Galapagos, Cocos, Malpelo or Socorro Islands. For lemons, the line in the sand is here in Florida. Bottom line, it's really important! Here's info sent to me from Dr. Jane Hightower, who is the author of "Diagnosis:Mercury:Money, Politics and Posion" "Here is how one should look at the issue: Shark contains about 879 mg of omega 3 fatty acids per 100 grams or 3.5 ounce serving. This would also contain on average 110 mcg of mercury. Salmon contains about 1750 mg of omega 3 fatty acids per 100 grams or 3.5 ounce serving. This would also contain on average 3.0 mcg of mercury. Which would you choose?" Just heard, though, that Chicago's Shedd Aquarium is now getting involved, and there's an NBC reporter working on the story, thanks to Bill Fisher.   13. The Shark with Olives item listed on "Daily Specials" uses Thresher Shark. "Shark Veracruz" is what's being advertised as their Taste of Chicago, and I didn't find a description on their web site.   14. The popular food festival, Taste of Chicago, has begun and to our horror we have learned that shark is one of the featured offerings at the Polo Cafe's booth. They have been serving "Shark Vera Cruz" in their restaurant and at the Taste for years, along with "Shark and Olives." For some inconceivable reason, Humana Inc, a health benefits company, has decided to promote shark as one of the healthier choices at the Taste. We have sent the following letter to Humana and we have contacted the organizers of the Taste of Chicago, the Polo Cafe and the Chicago Tribune, as well, to apprise them of the facts related to eating shark. A recommendation from a large, respected health organization promoting shark meat as a healthy choice is huge blow to shark populations, which are already in serious trouble. In light of this week's IUCN report showing that a third of all open ocean sharks are threatened with extinction (http://www.iucn.org/?3362/Third-of-open-ocean-sharks-threatened-with-extinction), this recommendation is highly irresponsible. The Taste of Chicago, Humana and the Polo Cafe highlighting this menu item only encourages people to look for and request shark at grocery stores and restaurants. Which is why we are shocked at Humana’s decision to promote shark meat as one of the “healthier choice” entrees featured at the Taste of Chicago festival. Humana has effectively provided a seal of approval for a product that carries warnings from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Environmental Defense Fund, Seafood Watch, the New York Department of Health, to name but a few organizations. With all of these highly respected entities publicly disagreeing with Humana’s recommendations, one might wonder how responsible and informed Humana’s recommendations truly are. Indeed, there is much research and publicly available data regarding the serious health issues associated with consumption of shark meat due to the high levels of mercury and other contaminants in the shark’s flesh. Because of these health risks, most health organizations advise that women of child-bearing age and children should not consume any shark meat at all, and everyone else should limit consumption to no more than one serving per month. The Florida Dept. of Health goes further to warn that EVERYONE should avoid eating meat from any sharks over 43 inches. In addition to the risks posed to people by consuming shark meat, there are significant health risks for our planet. Sharks around the world are threatened with extinction due to overfishing. Populations of many shark species have decreased by as much as 90% just in the past thirty years. As the apex predators of the oceans, the role of sharks is to keep other marine life in healthy balance and to regulate the world’s largest and most important ecosystem. Removing sharks seriously upsets this delicate balance. A number of studies are already indicating that regional elimination of sharks can cause disastrous effects including the collapse of fisheries and the death of coral reefs. There are many healthy and responsible seafood choices available that provide high quality lean protein and healthy omega-3 fatty acids without unnecessarily exposing consumers to mercury and other dangerous toxins and without damaging the environment ((please see attached Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Guide (http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/cr/SeafoodWatch/web/sfw_regional.aspx) and Shark Fact Sheet (http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/cr/cr_seafoodwatch/content/media/MBA_SeafoodWatch_SharkFactCard.pdf). By recommending safe and sustainable seafood choices, Humana can only stand to gain by leading the industry in environmental responsibility as well. Now that Humana is aware of the situation, we cannot imagine you will stand behind these flawed recommendations. We respectfully request that Humana take a stand and immediately rescind its recommendation of shark as a healthy choice option. We further request that Humana issue a retracting statement to all media outlets to which these recommendations were promoted. Finally, the recommendation should be withdrawn from the literature at the Taste of Chicago booth. Instead, the public, especially women and children, should be properly warned about the dangers of consuming shark – consistent with the recommendations of the EPA and the FDA.   15. Do we know of anyone who attended the meeting in Islamorada? Here are notes from Cheryl Black who attended the Punta Gorda meeting: The following people attended the workshop: Bob Heuter, Mote Marine Lab Jose Castro, Mote Marine Lab Cheryl Black, Edison State College Ralph Allen, Angler Sean Paxton, Boat Captain Brooks Paxton, Boat Captain Comments Ralph Allen Blacknose sharks are not overfished, and the 54” minimum size takes this species ‘off the table’ as they do not get that big. Concern about this species comes from the number of individuals that have been included in shrimp trawl by-catch. As shrimp trawling has decreased considerably over the past few years, the number of sharks in the by-catch have also decreased significantly. He also mentioned that data from recreational fishermen does not generate accurate harvest levels because many fishermen can't correctly identify shark species. Bob Heuter Florida has historically been a leader in promoting and implementing shark fishing regulations - would like to see the State anticipate what needs to be done to protect sharks rather than waiting until sharks are in trouble. Concurs with adding the sandbar, silky, and Caribbean sharpnose to the prohibited species list and recommends incuding: -all hammerhead species (except the bonnethead) – some populations have declined as much as 90% -tiger sharks in the Gulf Coast – populations have also plummeted in the last 15 years Suggested considering slot limits instead of fork limits to determine the size of “keepers” - may provide protection for older juveniles and reproductive females and let fishermen take older individuals that are past their reproductive prime. Blacktips can be exempted from the 54” rule – they are not overfished, are a favorite species for recreational fishermen. Maintain the present bag limit regulation. Consider implementing seasonal closures of pupping areas to protect females and growing neonates. Prohibit shark KILLING tournaments. Cheryl Black Mentioned that developing a consensual Gulf Coast Shark Management Program, while not the responsibility of the FFWCC, is vital for protecting sharks as they move in and out of Florida’s waters to those of neighboring states Stressed the importance of basing management programs on good, valid scientific data as well as anecdotal data acquired from fishermen Sean Paxton Has noted that management issues are becoming very important to recreational fishermen.
