  1. The new Canon GX10 could be quite interesting! My AX100 Sony doesn't seem to have the brightness of color that my old Canon G10 did. Looking at the pictures of the new Canon GX10 on B&H Photo's web site seemed fine - until I saw the "AIR INTAKE" and "EXHAUST VENT" labels on the right side of the new camera. I wonder if the 150 Mbps data rate causes some component(s) inside the camera to generate noticeable heat? Any housing design for the GX10 would probably need to account for some heat transfer - trapping heat underwater couldn't be good, especially on hour+ dives. Otherwise, I'm certainly tempted. I've also looked at the advance information on the Sony AX700 which may replace the AX100; there doesn't seem to be enough increase in capability at first glance to be worth an upgrade. I didn't see any higher data rate, or frame rate. I'm definitely staying tuned... Tom

  4. Sorry 'bout that! It has taken a while to find two clips that illustrate the difference in sharpness that were (sort of) comparable in light level and included motion. The first clip (Slender Filefish) was taken at 1/60 and the second (Turtle head) at 1/125. I just included a still capture from each because the difference to me is the same as seen in the clip. Here they are: I had to reduce the image sizes to upload the files, trying to preserve the level of detail; these are close, but the IQ of each did suffer in the reduction of file size. I hope the IQ carries through enough to let you see the difference. Tom

  6. We were diving Bonaire the last two weeks. While there, I asked John Wall of the Buddy Dive Photo Center if he had any recommendations for settings for underwater video. I use 4K/30p video exclusively. He surprised me by suggesting 1/125 shutter speed instead of the 1/60 I had been using. The purpose, he said, was to reduce motion blur for moving subjects. I wondered if that would reduce the light enough to cause problems, but the result with my AX100/Gates setup has been truly better in my amateur eyes. And not just a little bit - a lot! Underwater video came out much better. I went back to using auto WB, auto GAIN/ISO and auto IRIS (F-stop), locking shutter speed at 1/125 and got some of the best video so far with that setup. I tried it topside on flamingos and other subjects and was also well pleased. I said to John well, if some's good more must be better, right? He said no, that if you increase the shutter speed beyond 1/125 you begin to get a "cathedral effect" where vertical light streaks appear in the video. I did observe this in shallow water at 1/125 when the top part of the scene was brightly lit, but the bottom area was darker. There were a few circumstances where the visibility was poor that were not very good. Not sure how 1/60 would have done there as it was contrast that suffered. The camera still seemed to autofocus OK. 1/125 has now become my standard setting - I'm sure I will deviate back to 1/60 if circumstances require it. This was news to me - I'd been using 1/60 for a couple of years. Any comments or other advice? Tom

  10. Alison, Obviously something that doesn't change is creating spots only in your video. I'd be astonished if Lightroom is smart enough to automatically correct those spots without your input for the still photos - not impossible, but unlikely. Could the laptop screen have some dead pixels? Do you use the same lens for video as for stills? Just fishing ;-) ... Tom
  11. Alison, Not an expert - just trying to think it through. It looks like you have "boxed" a number of the spots you consider problematic, and "arrowed" the most objectionable one. I realize your camera has a built-in self-cleaning mechanism for the sensor. It looks a lot like there may be some specks stuck to the sensor that the built-in cleaner can't get rid of. A big clue would be to note whether the spots stay in the same places for two or more different scenes. If so, I'd bet on the sensor being contaminated. If you have access to a shop you trust, you could take it in for inspection and perhaps cleaning. I've done the cleaning myself a few times, but it is a very delicate process with the possibility of damaging the sensor. You can search WetPixel and/or the web to find out more. If the spots move around from one scene to another, I'm stumped, unless they are somehow related to reflective surfaces having a kind of "red-eye" effect. Tom
  12. Alison, Interesting... Almost sounds like something I'd get if there was a "blown out" or overexposed spot in the video. Don't ask how I know this. Could you post a frame capture to give a better idea of what you're describing? Two or three might be better. Tom
  13. Rainer, Macro is almost everywhere on Bonaire. Lots of shrimp, crabs, things in and around anemones etc etc Going really slowly and looking at very small scale could even net you a new species! Jawfish, some even with eggs, are possible at places like Something Special and lots of others. And of course sailfin blennies, seaweed blennies etc etc wherever you find them. Wide angle would include several small sunken boats (e.g., the tugboat at about 100' at Front Porch/Bari Reef, one in front of Captain Don's etc) and also the Hilma Hooker on a clear viz day if you are lucky. Ask when you arrive and you'll probably get other good suggestions. Have fun, Tom
  14. Curious as to why no one addressed the two salient points: a:) Why do divers have to be subjected to this scrutiny but not the cruise ship passengers? Internal political/cruise ship company payoffs? b:) Why are these scrutineers requiring more than the US does? If foreigners come to the US are they required to give up as much personal data as the Hondurans require? Or is it just "because they can" intimidate foreigners? What other countries require this level of data? Been lots of places; never had this kind of scrutiny and abuse (3-1/2 hours in line etc). Not going back to experience that again - you certainly may feel it's OK. Not trying to tell anyone what to do. Just trying to warn those who go to Roatan what to expect - unless you are going on a cruise ship. I did say this was our 4th trip there; this time it was a nasty surprise... Tom
  15. We went diving at CocoView the last week in March, 2017. The resort and the diving were great. The boats were a bit crowded and would benefit from another divemaster in the water with sometimes more than a dozen divers. Food - good, rooms - good, staff - good. I’d return to the resort. I won’t go back to Roatan or Honduras. Here’s why: Entry into Roatan was painfully slow, taking more than 1-1/2 hours. Exit was worse, taking over 2 hours. All the time was spent standing in line waiting for the most egregious violations of privacy I’ve experienced: Full ten-finger fingerprinting, scan of passport and an extra photograph taken with glasses, hats etc removed. Exiting the island was the same process. So for a total of 3-1/2 hours standing in line for this unnecessary abuse and violation of privacy we get into and out of the country. If you refuse, the officious fingerprint/picture-taker told me, my options were only one: immediate deportation. Some things to consider: 1) If Yahoo, other large companies, and yes, even governments cannot protect data, how can Honduras protect it? When it is stolen, could there be a better or more thorough identity theft opportunity for the bad guys? Probably not. 2) If Honduras is cheeky enough to require more data than we needed to give for a Global Entry pass into the US, what will stop them from asking for a DNA swab next time, or even a blood sample? I don’t think I’ll go back to find out. Example: four fingers and the passport photo are sufficient for US citizens to obtain Global Entry permits, compared with all ten fingers, the passport and an added photo for Honduras. Why? Because they can? 3) Roatan has thousands of cruise ship passengers every day. Are they demanding this kind of intrusive violation of privacy for each one of them? I doubt it. It looks like divers are being discriminated against in a big way. See ya, Roatan. Our fourth trip there is our last…

  18. Don, Not sure where you'll be on vacation but it seems likely there'd be diving involved? One of our granddaughters started learning snorkeling at Buddy's in Bonaire at age 6. She's now 13 and completed her 100th dive in Fiji last June. I'd endorse Buddy's program 100%, plus the parents get to dive 1/2 day while the kid(s) are at Buddy Ranger camp. My perspective... I've used Aircraft Spruce's foam - I think the Divinycell but it could have been another: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/categories/building_materials/bm/menus/cm/foam.html It's a closed cell foam, quite buoyant and not very costly. It doesn't compress at recreational depths and can be easily shaped with simple woodworking tools. At 3 or 6 lbs/cuft it doesn't take much to make a pretty good float. Hope this helps, Tom

  21. Thani, I always have the lights attached to my video rig. Except where they are not allowed, as when we snorkel with the manatees. I do not use them all the time; I try to use them only when I think it will help the video such as in turbid water, night diving and in overhead environments where the light levels are low. Macro is usually better with lights on, but not always. Positioning the lights is very important too. I guess what I'm trying to say is there is no set answer - yes/no to your question (sorry!) but depends on this operator's sense of whether they will add color or contrast to the video. A school of sennet or barracuda will pop when properly lighted, where they may appear dull in natural light. At night I use red filters and low power levels most of the time so as to minimize annoying the critters. Sometimes full white light is needed, but usually at lower power than daytime. BTW, tarpon love hunting near me when they see my lights. I try not to illuminate their prey too often. Well, I hope you get the idea, Tom
  22. Swift, Interesting question. I updated to 4K from basically the same setup you have, getting a Sony AX100 and a Gates housing. I'd never go back. The still captures alone are amazing, and the video (on a 4K monitor, of course) is incomparably better if I have all the settings right. The Gates housing has proved much more failure-resistant than the L&M ever was for me. Having said that, the Sony setup is now two years old, and it does have a few shortcomings - white balance is tricky, and it needs a good manual shooter to run it for best results. And Sony (and maybe others) are about due to release newer models. When, and whether they will be housed are the big questions. In your situation I think I'd wait a bit - maybe six months? Just to see what else becomes available. My opinion, no-one else's! Tom EDIT: Moving to 4K also involves a lot more I forgot to mention: the PC needs more memory, more speed and more terabytes of storage. At 100mbps, older PCs can have a hernia and freeze up! If you already have this, good. If not, it's good to factor this cost into the mix.
  23. Interesting problem... It's been a long time since I used an L&M; usually no problem with that particular piece. I can recall getting the wire pinched while closing the back - it was hard to diagnose since the outside of the wire looked OK. Also, if the other end of the wire wasn't plugged all the way in, problems... The solder joint between the cable and the monitor (inside the back itself I think) can also cause a problem. L&M replaced the motherboard in the OLED back under warranty and all was good. Maybe yours needs that? It couldn't be anything simple like the flip filter being in place when you wanted it out of the way, or the white balance way off and needs to be redone? You have no doubt tried these but I needed to mention them just in case. No picture was attached to your message, so couldn't see what you were seeing. Tom
