RETRA Strobe Thread
Nicool replied to guyharrisonphoto's topic in Lights, Strobes, and Lighting Technique
Anyone heard back from Retra on the strobes readiness? Yes, have got a dive trip planned soon (early Feb), and the subject matter would certainly benefit larger strobes Envoyé de mon iPhone en utilisant Tapatalk -
Probably right, so there might be more photographers than we thought making money, but they kept it secret ;-) Envoyé de mon iPhone en utilisant Tapatalk

Hi guys, 8 years later i would love to hear fresh views on the topic not that i expect UW photography to easily pay bills now but curious to know how the over-presence of social media (for instance) may have transformed underwater photographers’ bottom line 8 years ago we said the main income source was leading trip, workshops, doing trainings... what about social media? what about being a brand ambassador (not sure if that grants you more than free loan gear) :) Nicolas

Can dx compete with fx with nauticam WACP
Nicool replied to pooley's topic in Photography Gear and Technique
Thanks for that! I know it’s not so straightforward to compare non-rectilinear lenses, so just wondering how differents are the angles of view between 8-15mm + kenko 1.4 and the 10-17 without kenko. I really like my 10-17, unsure what sort of improvements a 8-15mm could bring besides lifting my purse Envoyé de mon iPhone en utilisant Tapatalk -

Great to read about the flexibility introduced with the smartphone connectivity, the Retra guys literally thought outside the box. One thing not mentioned in Alex’s video is the leak monitor / water tightness test. Hope this is still part of the specs of the production flash. Envoyé de mon iPhone en utilisant Tapatalk -

On this IQ topic, i’ve been shooting D500 with tokina 10-17mm for 3 years under 100mm dome, happy generally, but can’t comment much on IQ (upgraded from a D300s). The Nikon 8-15mm is probably better IQ and good looking lens, but i can’t get excited about the cropped circular image. You mentioned using a kenko 1.4, does that give you a nicer range, without cropping, bit like tokina? Envoyé de mon iPhone en utilisant Tapatalk -

Great update Oskar! Can i ask a few things, which i believe will be of interest to others: 1/ what is the benefit of using the new bumpers instead of the cheaper neoprene covers? 2/ are the exisiting whide angle diffusers compatible & recommended to use with Retra Pro, or will there be new versions coming? Asking because the new flashs have wider angle and warmer light than first Retra 3/ is a leakage detector still part of the design? Thanks and good luck for the last sprint, you have lots of underwater photographers backing you Nicolas Envoyé de mon iPhone en utilisant Tapatalk -

Anglerfish Trigger - remote slave sensor
Nicool replied to TimG's topic in Photography Gear and Technique
Hi Adam,What did you like about it? It surely looks like a neat design, but thinking about costs, if what you enjoyed is the rigidity, i am thinking you could just achieve that with the ultralight tripod clamp and any 3 regular underwater strobe arms (as tripod legs) + screwing a ball mount on top, on which a regular strobe clamp would give you flexibility to adjust the orientation of your strobe. As far as stability is concerned, id just attach 1-2 kg lead to the tripod clamp (with a regular rope), which would lower down the center of gravity and stabilize the whole thing. Am i missing anything?- 25 replies

Anglerfish Trigger - remote slave sensor
Nicool replied to TimG's topic in Photography Gear and Technique
Thanks for that! The ballhead adaptor sounds appropriate. For the gorillapod itself, id be tempted to go for a much sturdier version also allowing to position the strobe higher, like the 5kg one. Dont you think so? Also i am afraid the whole thing could easily be buoyant and a mess with the slightest surge, so id like ability to attach 1-2kg weight onto the tripod. I plan to shoot this mostly on much dives so no risk of damaging the environment- 25 replies

Anglerfish Trigger - remote slave sensor
Nicool replied to TimG's topic in Photography Gear and Technique
Hi guys, for the remote strobe itself, i too thought that a gorillapod would make a suitable underwater tripod. Any experience to share on which model is right, and what sort of strobe attachment you would need? Also, would you need to attach some weight onto the tripod?- 25 replies

Hi there, i am using the Santi smart glove system on a Santi drysuit (might be relevant option to the op given he dives Santi). Love them and i agree with above comment dexterity isnt that bad, provided i dont go too deep/ascend too quickly. Indeed, i get a bit of a Mickey Mouse hands otherwise, making photos difficult. Probably i should leave some sort of tubes to allow air venting through wrist seals. Worth noting i am using rather expensive HD gloves from fourth eleement, but i have been impressed by their resistance to abrasion: not yet punctured after nearly 1 year of diving, although grabbing rocks, shelly / abrasive surfaces (shells, etc). So very pleased, just need to address the Mickey Mouse effect.

Hi, sorry no time to read the whole post, but when i got this housing my strobes wouldnt fire due to fiber optics quality: my fibers were find on nauticam D300s setup because lots of light came through the built-in flash. The D500 flash trigger is low-energy, will send just a tiny light and unless you have a high quality fiber optic, your strobes just wont see it (happened with my Inons). I ended up buying a pair of nauticam-branded fibers and worked just fine. I am hearing that inon branded fibers are fine too, but havent tried myself. Hope this helps.

That’s exactly what i am wondering. As many APS-C Nikon shooter, i own the AF-S micro 60mm lens, and i would be happy with a narrower angle, say 100-110 degrees maybe, as long as the image quality remains very good. Also, i’d like to know what is the recommended aperture to achieve peak performance on APS-C (with distorsion on smaller sensors, the f/16 recommendation probably doesn’t apply) Envoyé de mon iPhone en utilisant Tapatalk

Sorry to hear you’ve been sick and missed few days of diving. Happened to me in last 2 dive trips, i know how it feels... Still, an awe-inspiring selection of wide angle photos you brought back! You made the trip worth it really. I am stucky between admiration and jealousy Envoyé de mon iPhone en utilisant Tapatalk -
