  1. I am going to correct myself as I reread the email from Backscatter.... They said that you get TTL with the YS D1 because it is an optical slave... So any problems with the TTL and the Sony Rx100?
  2. Beautiful shots... especially the second one ( I presume a giant clam) ! have been considering this camera also. Backscatter said that there was no TTL but someone here said TTL was available with the YS-D1. Has anyone else experienced TTL on this camera and if so with what combo of housing and strobe? Do the Subsee +5, +10 and FIT +16 diopters then fit right on the nauticam housing or other housing?
  3. success on the first day in palau how often do you grease the o rings and clean the o-ring mating channels? we are going out for about 3 dives a day. would you do it every day if u were doing 3 dives thank u all for your suggestions!

  5. Rodriquezfelix. i am on my way to palau and will not send it back to ikelite at this point. i have reported that there was a bit of damage inside the last time that it started to flood. it has been back twice to ikelite already! if it does flood again that is what i will do but for now i need to try it again and hope for the best. rtrski. thanks for your tips. the bubble i saw am pretty sure were the beginning of another flood because when i opened the hatch there was rust and before the submersion there was none. ikelite had hinted that maybe i had tightened it too much but maybe they were wrong...thanks for your tips. i will hope to keep the water out so that i can get good shots at jellyfish lake and the other great sites in palau. tarzana
  6. thank you everyone for answering this query. The saga continues: after I got my strobe back, i counted the turns it took to open the strobe's hatch, i then greased the o ring with the grease given by ike (can you use the nikonos grease?) then i closed it the same number of turns. when i took it in the water right away a few bubbles started to come out of the hatch area. i immediately brought the camera to the boat and a guy rinsed out the battery case area. i checked it later and because this was done right away it did not damage it enough so it will not flash but you can see a bit of oxidation inside. if i had taken it down water would have continued to come in. i totally exasperated with this strobe. i decided to not dive with it here in Okinawa again and just take the whole set up to palau in 3 more days and hope for the best there. if it floods again i am going to ask for a refund! i know how to ready a strobe for a dive as i have had a nikonos strobe since 1985...somehow i have not had luck with this sunstrobe 51!!! that is interesting, james your explanation about the difference btw the nikonos and the ike strobe’s o ring sealing properties. also how long exactly have you been using your sunstrobe 51's? the reason that i bought the ike was its ttl capability. i wanted to buy the second one but at this point I do not have much confidence in this piece of equipment. Are there any other options for strobes for Canon G9 that are good quality, less problematic and have the TTL capability? Also apologies for not replying sooner but I did not get an email saying that anyone replied to my question. I guess something got turned off in my settings cause I was getting them before! Thanks once again Tarzana One more thing. I do LOVE my G9 camera and when the strobe works it is magical.. if you want to see my photo book from borneo (uw work done before the first flood!) you may do so by going to http://harwanko.com/travel-logs.htm and clicking on the Borneo book
  7. I have taken my single sunstrobe DS 51 on a second vacation and had it flood for the second time. I know how to grease an o ring and close it properly since i had a nikonos 103 for 18 years and no flooding occurred at any time. the first time it flooded in borneo. i used it for about 8 dives and it flooded (it worked on the last dive then back on the boat it was quite apparent that sea juice got inside!) this last time in Puerto Galera i took it for a test drive to 90 feet and and it was aok.. went for a second dive and it again worked fine the whole dive and when i came up the dreaded black liquid came out of the battery case when i opened it. i just talked to the ikelite repair department and they said that i could be tightening it just one quarter turn too much. if this is so ( and i do not think i overdid it) this strobe is a very delicate creature. has anyone else had any problems with theirs? tarzana
  8. islandbound, thank you for your help...i went to computown in korinza today and they wanted $389 for the 5100. it can be here in 3 days ...amazon wants 305 but that will take about a week to get here.. that i still ok ...don't know where mihama is and i cant seem to find the okinawa branch of kitamura camera on the net to see where it is or call but will research it tomorrow. i almost went to Makeman ( the one in Chatan right??) but i ran out of time. hope i can call one or the other and someone will speak some english! as for a battery is this one the one everyone recommends to get? Nikon EN-EL5 Rechargeable Li-ion Battery attached is the inon that i saw with a flexi arm, jugglematt, but i think i would like a double strobe. wrote to divervision and hopefully they will can help me out or i can find what i want in makeman here. tarzana islandbound, thank you for your help...i went to computown in korinza today and they wanted $389 for the 5100. it can be here in 3 days ...amazon wants 305 but that will take about a week to get here.. that i still ok ...don't know where mihama is and i cant seem to find the okinawa branch of kitamura camera on the net to see where it is or call but will research it tomorrow. i almost went to Makeman ( the one in Chatan right??) but i ran out of time. hope i can call one or the other and someone will speak some english! as for a battery is this one the one everyone recommends to get? 9. thanks for pix. ohhhhhhhhhhhh yeah, i does look heavy. hmmm i thought i saw somewhere on the net a uw set up for the 5100 up with flexi arms??? i know fantasea sells one and that one i do not want as it does not allow the ttl but I will have to look more. perhaps i will just buy the ike housing and the 5100 and go off to sipadan like that. i know i will be sorry when i am in the water without enough light but time is running out for me if i buy this online and send it here to japan. so perhaps i will do some research on a different site with UW equipment forums for a lighter TTL hook up for the ike housing with the 5100. if anyone has any suggestions for elsewhere to search. i am all ears! anyway thanks for your help, matty! tarzana
  10. Matty, thanks for the tips... it seems that with either the coolpix P5100 or the canon G9 i will have to go for the ikelite housing.wish i could make up my mind about the camera first of all but i have had 2 other nikons and it is always a joy to shoot with it.. i looked up the inon strobes and they look lighter than Ike's Sunstrobe 51 set up.. Can anyone share their experience and compare the Inon one with the Ike 51 for quality, recycle time and weight? would like to go with the lightest of the two but not spare quality. i will be looking manana to see if i can find the 5100 here in okinawa. Matty do you have a pic of your setup? is it dual strobes? how do you find the weight? btw-- today's pix look like partly like an abstract painting! Thank you everyone who has contributed in this forum on the Nikon P5000-5100 for all the info so far!! i am starting to narrow my search down tarzana
  11. Jack, I would like a strobe that has TTL capabilities. Is a heavy Ikelite system one the only one for the Nikon P5100? tarzana
  12. thanks for your response Daniel... Is this D551 + Ikelite housing a relatively heavy set up? I am trying to avoid weight but still get quality. Does your choice mean that the Nikon housing/flash set up did not give TTL and you cannot use wet lenses?
  13. I am getting ready to buy a set up and this is one of the ones that I am considering: http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/16983/coolpix-p5100-housing/ ( P5100 + fantasea housing + strobes) does anyone have this exact rig with the strobes and all? are there any more comments about this camera and its capabilities underwater? thank you ahead of time to anyone that can help with some words of experience. by the way Jugglematt your 004 in section 7 of the sea star was awesome... do you know remember how it was shot? wide angle lens? i used to be able to take shots like that with my 20mm wide angle and my Nikonos V. I miss it --but not the film part!! tarzana
  14. thank you for the mini "vocab" lesson. now i have 200 feet of viz in my head will check into the "glass" when deciding on the rig i want.. gracias..tarzana
  15. Thank you Timmoranuk... by the time I pack my backpack with my laptop and all the stuff that I do not want in my baggage I already have one bag full and it is not light. In addition many of these airlines in Asia permit one carry-on, so I am wondering how to manage all of the extra. The scierra bag looks great but I would rather have the weight on my back. In further investigating, it looks like my Nikonos flash can be used and it can have TTL capabilities. That is good news. The bad news is this is with the Ikelite tray that is so heavy which I want to avoid-- the excess weight. This would be a great savings for sure to be able to use my strobe. If anyone is using the Canon Housing with the Nikonos Strobes please let me know if the TTL works and if so let me know the other EQP you had to buy for it. This is what I read on another forum about the Canon Housing for the G9 : “Unable to mount wet lenses on housing (Unless modification is made or purchase a special lens holder)†So I am surmising that this means that you cannot change lenses underwater.. correct? Are there special lens holders out there for making this specific modification? Not sure what you meant, Timmoranuk, by “supplementing it with glass†nor using "fiber optics"???? Some new terms for me with UW photography equipment, sorry : / Tarzana
  16. thanks James..I have used the Nikonos V mostly and did not have a problem with my Oly 5050 housing.. how does one avoid the fogging? I have looked further into the specs of the G 9 and now is one of the considerations.
  17. I would like to purchase a new digicam, dual tray. a light system that is lightweight and not bulky. Will buy one flash for now. All 3 of these cameras have good reviews and would like to know which one would be most recommended. Need to buy this soon as I am off to Sipadan and would like to try it out before I go! tarzana
  18. I am in the market for a new Digicam and set that is not a heavy and bulky, has manual settings, TTL capabilities, as little shutter lag as possible, plus good macro capabilities.. had a Nikonos V for 20 years and Oly5050 for awhile but found it bulky as i attached my Nikonos SB flash to it. it was heavy.I looked at the pix you posted with your set up and the tray plus handles look very heavy too. is it possible to get a lighter weight one with different tray and flash? must purchase something soon as i am off to sipadan soon, tarzana
  19. I just read some reviews and 4 out of 4 said that the P-DC21 Underwater Housing fogged very shortly after use. Anyone have experience with the Nikon PS100 and a good housing? tarzana
  20. oops forgot to add: would also like to buy a wide angle eventually and a macro if it did not have good macro capabilities...this camera would be used topside also. tarzana
  21. Is there such a compact camera that has manual settings, good size viewfinder, and that you can attach an external strobe that will auto cync? of course the housing too. thanks tarzana
  22. Hello, I will be interested in knowing what you choose Kerry as i am in the same boat.. used a nikonos V from 1985 to 2002 then went digital and bought a OLY 5050 and did not like it for several reasons. would like a smaller cam than this with more than 5 Pix and the ability to house it with reasonably priced strobe(s) that are not too large. i have looked at some new sony cameras -- the Sony DSC-N2 10 Megapixel CyberShot Digital Camera is very interesting and i wonder if it can be housed and how it is UW??? tarzana
  23. I am back to reply that I have found Graphic Converter which converted my fotos taken in RAW format. It was a one by one deal and I will go back to using SHQ. Asrti: what is PSE 3.0 ? tarzana
  24. The second time that I took out the rings they did not fit very well back into their spaces. I closed it anyway and it sealed ok. It happened to a friend of mine too. Was this a fluke or ?? I have misplaced the pick to get out the o-rings and have been using an old Dan card that is getting quite bent up. Åny other suggestions? Every dive I check out the o-rings of my PT-105 and the two ports on my Nikonos 105 strobe then grease them. Is there anything more that one has to do for maintenance of either? tarzana
