  1. Much thanks to everyone for the info. You guys are great!
  2. Thanks for all of the info. everyone! It will all be very helpful. I won this trip to Lembeh. So, I guess we kinda got a trip for two @ 1/2 price. Next year we will most likely book a trip to Bali for our "real" 10th anniversary (July 3rd). We are actually only in our 9th year of beating each other up. lol Until then, seeing the rest of the world cant be all that bad.
  3. I'm confused more than ever now but, anyway .... Found out recently that the Maldives is out of the question. Long story. Looks like Lembeh is our only option. We're staying @ The Lembeh Resort. Could somebody who has been there give me the full scoop on things .... including alternate excursions? I can be happy with just muck diving and shooting things around the resort, .... but my wife, she would like to do something besides watch my z240's create backscatter. lol Best time of year? Water Temps, clarity? Any wide angle opps? How are the guides? Volcano tour-worth it? Sunsets, .... should I bring any topside gear (i.e. pano, gnd,)? Flight time from Houston, Texas? Do's & Dont's? Thanks for all of the opinions so far.
  4. Looking to go to either Lembeh or the Maldives. Can the Wetpixel forum help me decide? If anyone who has been to both or either of the two, please fill me in on the scenario & which one would be best for whatever. I hear Lembeh has cold murky water & the Maldives reefs are badly bleeched. Have read bad reports about the dive operators in the Maldives also. My wife & I will be celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary & one of these spots will be host. I'm a photographer & she is only OW certified. I've never been west of Hawaii so thanks for any & all info.
  5. Could you elaborate a little more on this? Thanks
  6. Pretty much what I did. Tokina would cost $400 to repair ... not. Cant trust the 7D anymore so it's done too ... along with batt. & CF card.
  7. Anyone ever have all of that replaced? Cost?
  8. Just put it all back together (minus the camera) and submerged it in the bath tub. No leaks. Now I'm confused because I never got past the mooring buoy at the surface. Leads me to think I did something wrong instead of it being mechanical.
  9. AV if there is plenty of light ... otherwise, Manual. SS should be 1/1000th or more. F8-16 is ideal. Center point focus. Stay out of the surfers way as best you can. Good luck & have fun.
  10. If you don't want to go in there, just give me the wide eyed, single digit, universal symbol.
  11. Not yet. Sending it (Subal housing) to get serviced soon. Claimed the 7D on insurance w/full replacement. Lucky. Found a place where I might be able to salvage the Tokina (jfyi): http://www.thkphoto.com/support/repairs/
  12. Hey y'all Flooded a Subal housing this past week in Cayman. Any ideas as to what to do with a body rinsed immediately with fresh water after a salt water flood? Is it worth anything? ... Tokina 10-17 too... drowned. ... also, what recommendations, as far as maintenance, should I do on the Subal CD7 housing? Insurance should cover most of the loss.
  13. Found out just how hard UW Photography really is. Thought I'd come back with a load of decent pics ... not. Taken near "Pelican Rock" @ Lands End @ 65'.....
  14. Typically, which of the two options would be best during a wall dive? I'm guessing a double strobe to add a brightly lit subject to the fore ground with a model or fish in the back ground?
  15. Thanks everybody! ... those are all great tips. I especially can relate to "knowing the controls blindfolded". Thats going to kill me until. ... btw, the pic doesnt show it but i'm using Nikonos 5 pin cords. Mark
  16. Going to Cabo San Lucas this weekend. Anyone have any suggestive baby steps? Never have shot with a dslr underwater. Inons are somewhat confusing .
  17. Called an online retailer with a question. The sales person was very friendly andl he asked my name in order to look up my account. After finding out I bought a large purchase from "the other" retailer recently, his tone was sharp and vague. He answered my question ... but upon parting ways, I all but heard his end of the phone slammed in my ear. I understand retail outlets dont have time to answer every non-buyers questions .... but 20 minutes prior to making the call to him, I ordered almost $90.00 worth of merchandise.... and I will order more in the future. I notified him of the recent purchase and stated that I'd buy even more in the future from his Co. His response was "We dont survive on small purchases such as mine and hopefully I could remember that in the future". My question to this board is: How much $$$ must one spend before they are entitled to online support via the retailers "toll free" telephone # ? Not trying to stir a pot .... just a newbie trying to fit in. All insight welcome.
  18. Not exactly what youre looking for but, I decided to get one (Subal CD7) for my 7D instead of my 5DMKII. It should be in my hands by early to mid June. I live in Southeast Texas (10 miles North of Beaumont)..... You're more than welcome to visit..... Bring yo bib
  19. Godspeed to Rick & his recovery! I know I'll never meet him but just wanted to say that people he has never met is hoping for the best future for him & his family. Stay strong. Mark
  20. What is the best setting for AF sensitivity? I'm guessing slow or average? I know topside, when shooting sports like football, you want it slow in case another player jumps in front of the main subject .... it keeps focus on the original target rather than one who breifly gets in the way. Would it be different for WA shots as opposed to macro? Also, what about "center point" focusing compared to "spot"? (w/Canon 7D) .... Would one be better than the other? Has anyone experimented with other AF points while shooting WA on the 7D? Thanks for any insight. Mark
  21. Hey all Did a search on here & found nothing on the subject. I'm wanting to do some split shots next month of my wife in Cabo San Lucas with my new dslr kit. I was wondering if there were any options to shoot polarized shots with the Tokina 10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 DX on a 7D. If not, how can the same look be done on PS5? Would prefer a filter as a first choice. Thanks for any help. Mark
  22. Would a REALLY small Pelican flashlight work? So glad for this thread. I will soon receive two z-240's myself.
  23. Thanks very much, guys! I think I'm going with the Sola 1200. Maybe I can get some good video out of a focus light too. ... on another note, since I have some helpful attention... Does anyone here ever find the Inon Z-240's coming up short on light compared to YS-250's? This is about the only dilemma I have before I drop the bank on a new dslr kit this week. Being lightweight & compact is great, but what is it worth if the shots are substandard?
  24. Hello everyone. I'm about to purchase a Focus light and was wondering which is considered best for a Canon 7D/Subal/Tokina 10-17 kit. I'm leaning towards two types. * FIX LED 1500DX * Light & Motion Sola 600 Would one prefer the battery(s) of the FIX 1500DX over the L&M Sola 600? Is the build quality of one superior to the other? I plan on using the focus light for video also. Any and all info/opinions on these two focus lights are much appreciated.
  25. Update: I've since switched to Essex because I updated from the 20D to the 7D. Cant say enough good about Mike Waggoner of Essex & his housings.
