  1. Goddit! :-) Thanks John. So, is 640LUX a usable device or just a worthless toy? If it's useful, why is it so cheap? I've been reading about SOLA 1200s at GB£300 and more. :-s
  2. I'm looking to buy a pair of UW lights to go with my Gopro Hero 2. I keep seeing lights measured in Lumens and LUX. Is that the same? I know that more is better but what power do I "need" for the light to be useful? I saw a cheap light that I thought might get me started with 640LUX output. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400280134437 Is that a useful starter light or is it just a toy to waste money on? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give. :-)
  3. This is interesting. I have a Tamron 18-200 and a 70-300. The 18-200 is my "walking about" lens. I find it's intermittent in autofous and, sometimes, my D60 says it can't find the lens at all! I'm thinking about buying the 60mm macro but, on reading your post, I'm thinking harder. It IS a full F stop faster than the Nikon one.
  4. Has anyone any experience with Westfield? http://www.divinginsuranceuk.com/equipment.htm I just came off the 'phone to them and they sound very credible.
  5. What if; Ben were to sell "shares" in his professional photography business and used the funds to buy his new equipment? Then, when he had enough money, he could buy back the shares, at the appropriate percentage of the current nett value of his business. The "shareholders" would feel they were making a contribution and, when Ben bought back their stake, they'd make a profit. Comments?
  6. I have a Northern Diver Cortex, so does my wife. I'd have to agree, my next suit wouldn't be a ND. Admittedly, they are both pepper dry but; we've dived <50 dives in ours, they're washed in fresh water and dried after every dive (we take good care of our gear) and I've had problems. Sticky zip, sticky valves, poor bouyancy control, the trilaminate has gone "fluffy" where it rubs on my cumberbund. I used to have a Hydrotech neoprene and it was a lovely suit by comparison but; it leaked.
  7. Hi Ken, I LOVED your article, VERY informative. I have a question though. Don't the retaining rings and housings on the diopters rust very quickly?
  8. I have all kinds of problems with my eyes because I had an undiagonosed "lazy eye" when I was a youngster. It caused my right eye to become overly dominant and resulted in astigmatism in my left eye. This caused strain in my right eye, taking up the slack. I have a completely different prescription in my left eye to the one in my eye. Above water I wear varifocals, from the moment I wake up, to the moment I go to sleep. So, I guess I feel qualified to comment on this post. I used to wear contact lenses when I was diving and I hated them. They only corrected my near vision, made my distance vision worse and they stung, made my eyes water, all kinds of annoyances. Eventually, about 6 months ago, I decided to try a (cheap, just in case it didn't work) prescription lens mask. I visited my LDS http://sounddiving.co.uk/ and bought a new mask, identical to the one I already use, nothing special, in fact, a bit generic but, I like it. Steve sent it off to have the lenses fitted, two weeks later I was in the water with it. Total cost was about GB£130. It is, without a doubt, the best piece of dive gear I've EVER bought. It's revolutionised my enjoyment of my diving. I have a Simply Health https://www.simplyhealth.co.uk/sh/pages/homepage.jsp?source=ppc&cid=9703 private health plan through work that gives me a GB£200 allowance for prescription eye wear and dentistry and, after a little coaxing, they paid for the mask and the lenses. When my policy renews in January I'm going to have a verifocal version and keep my existing one as a spare. My advice, for what it's worth, would be: If you're thinking about it but hesitating don't, go do it. Don't get stick ons, don't wear contacts, go see your LDS and order a mask with fixed, corrected lenses, you won't regret it.
  9. Hiya, Just joined wetpixel a few days ago. Really enjoying the articles, this is just what I need. I'm based just outside Plymouth in Devon, UK which is the most wonderful place on Earth to live, truly magical. I've been a diver for about 8 years now: PADI Open Water and Advanced Open Water qualified with a couple of specialities under my belt too: Dry Suit Diver Deep Diver Wreck Diver I'm looking to take my Rescue Diver around Easter next year and then a couple more Specialities during the rest of 2013: Underwater Photography (of course) Enriched Air EAN Shark Awareness and then go for my Master SCUBA Diver qualification. I've been a photographer for about 40 years now but never really gotten any further than interested amateur. I currently own a Nikon D60 with a couple of Tamron lenses and a Nissin flash and a Gopro Hero 2 with a SCUBA housing and an LCD back pack. I use Lightroom 4, Photoshop CS4 and Premiere Pro CS4. I guess I know how to use the gear, wpretty much, here I'm weak is I don't know how to be creative with it. I occassionally take a photo worth spending some time developing but I don't think I know what to do to get the best out of them. I made the decision to take my photography much more seriously about 4 weeks ago and am in the process of enrolling in a college course to learn how to be more creative. I've also decided to buy myself a DSLR SCUBA rig and am pondering just what to get at this stage. At this stage I'm really just looking for advice about equipment and techniques for capturing images. Anyway, hadn't intended this to turn into just such an essay, sorry. lol
