I recently had the opportunity of a lifetime to go down in a research sub which had 2 of these in use during each dive. The sub crew spoke very highly of them. They were simply turned on before each dive and ran with no problems (unlike my GoPro 6 which only works the way I want it to about 25% of the time). They were mounted external to the sub and easily handled our 500 foot dives on this trip. I was surprised at how well it white balanced at depth. No filters or post white balance editing required. Thinking of picking up one myself. Just saw a Black Friday special on their site. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Guadalupe - Great White Sharks - trip report & pix
mattwallace24 replied to Ken Kurtis's topic in Trip Reports and Travel
Just returned last night. Was not impressed with my camera’s (Nikon D500) auto iso, but that is to be expected. I’ve yet to see consistent photos using auto iso at Guadalupe. Much easier to take some quick test shots to set your iso. I also try to slightly underexpose my photos to prevent blowouts and edit the exposure later in Lightroom. I’ve never trusted it. However, I’ll be back at Guadalupe this time next week and will give it a test. Will report back how well it works. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Guadalupe - Great White Sharks - trip report & pix

I’ve been 9 times so far (10th and 11th trips upcoming over the next 2 months), so I’m basing my response on my experience at Guadalupe. You definitely don’t need strobes. In fact, during my first 9 trips (with multiple groups on different boats), I’ve only seen one person use their strobes. Ambient light is more than enough to get your shots. At most, strobes offer some fill light for the bottom of the sharks, but not necessary by any means. In fact, many times the sharks are about 10+ feet away, so strobes (or a video light) would be of limited benefit. Your settings are a good starting point. I usually shoot a little slower shutter speed (1/250) allowing me to drop my ISO down to 100-200. I shoot manual and adjust to light patterns with ISO first. Have a great trip! Finally moving up from many years with my Nikon D90/Aquatica setup to a new D500/Nauticam setup. So far, 100% of my u/w photography has been large subjects using the Tokina 10-17 fisheye lens. For now, my photography will stay the same, so looking for port recommendations to use with my Tokina/Nauticam setup. I'm leaning towards a glass (versus acrylic) port this time and looking at both Nauticam and Zen options. Currently looking at the Nauticam N120 140mm Optical Glass Fisheye Port, the Zen DP-100 100mm Fisheye Dome Port, and the Zen DP-170mm Fisheye Dome Port. My Aquatica setup used the 8 inch (203mm) acrylic dome, so the larger sizes are not a concern. Photography is typically large sharks, rays, whales, etc. Any advice or thoughts or other recommendations, please share. Thanks! Matt

The Tokina is a great lens for Guadalupe. I've been to Guadalupe the past 5 years and by far the Tokina is the most common lens used on every trip. Although the sharks get close, you would not want to get any wider. I actually tend to drift closer to the 17mm side of the zoom. You'll enjoy the trip.

Strangely enough, my switches are 1-3 down and 4 up. Strange because I don't recall that being a referenced setting or why I ended up with it. Worked fine for me however. Matt
