Halmahera & Lembeh liveaboard with the GH5

Thanks! -
Here's a video of a recent trip to Halmahera and Lembeh in Indonesia from June. It was nice to finally get out and travel again. And, I didn't catch covid in the process. :-) The trip was onboard the MSY Seahorse, a 12 day liveaboard departing from Bitung. Visibility deteriorated as the trip went on making it a challenge to shoot. The highlight was a wall of about 1,000 barracudas at Tifore Island.

Panasonic GH5M2 fits existing GH5 housing
stphnmartin replied to Interceptor121's topic in Video Gear and Technique
I just got back from a trip to Bonaire with the GH5M2. The battery life is extremely more improved. With the GH5 I could get 1.5 dives out of a Panasonic battery. The new GH5M2 battery gave me 2 100 minutes dives no problem. This is great for not having to pop open the housing as often. And, in Bonaire you don't want to keep extra batteries or anything in the truck for fear of theft. So, this is a great improvement. I did three dives on one battery. But on the third dive I did shut down the camera when not using it. I have the camera connected to a small HD monitor. Focusing is much faster and more accurate. Using back button focus was very quick and I seldom had to make multiple attempts. I shot all video so nothing to report on stills. Once I review the footage and put a video together, I'll be more informed about those aspects. Attached screengrab from the video. -
Thanks Kraken de Mabini! Appreciate your comments. I may make the next one with longer cuts.

Thanks. I think the kelp forest in the video was south Vancouver Island near Victoria. However, you can find kelp forests closer at Salt Creek on the peninsula.

A few others have mentioned the short clips. It's kinda like Billy Joel's song "We didn't start the fire". You have to slow it down to figure out what he's saying in the fast parts. :-) I'm not much help about real estate on the Islands. I can say a few of my favorite dive sites are on the south side of Lopez Island. :-)

Thanks! Wow, I bet the marine life was much more abundant back in the 70s. I hope you're still diving!

The cold waters of the Salish Sea contain many beautiful and colorful marine creatures. With the world in challenging shape this past year, I feel fortunate to be able to visit them every now and then. Here's a compilation of various visits throughout the pacific northwest. Comments and critiques welcomed.

Socorro Islands with the Pelagic Fleet
stphnmartin replied to stphnmartin's topic in Photo / Video Showcase
I had video lights, but opted for ambient light and custom white balance. The speed at which the animals appear and disappear make it difficult to be prepared with appropriate settings and turning lights on/off. 10k lumens will probably be the minimum needed if going that route. -
In November I managed to steal an adventure from and otherwise difficult 2020. After getting Covid-19 tested, keeping a temperature log and donning two masks, I ventured to the Socorro Islands for the first time with the GH5 on the Solmar V. I head read all the report of camera housings getting taxed going through customs, but we got the green light when tapping the button and all was good! Spent 8 days aboard the Solmar V with masked crew and divers. The crew was happy to be back at sea again after being shut down for months. I was happy to be back in warm water. Below is the video of the adventure.

I'm using a tripod. The Nauticam GH5 ball mounts with the xit404 tripod legs.

Cool, it's always fun to upgrade. Except for the learning curve! ;^)

Thank for watching Steph1!

Thanks troporobo! If I remember correctly, the wider shots were done using the Oly 12-50 and the closeup on the eggs was the Oly 60mm (on two different dives of course). Both lenses fit the Nauticam 12-50 port.

Thanks Inteceptor121. Am I really to believe you think a still image of a harlequin shrimp reveals almost as much detail as video of its intricate movements due to lens focal lengths?

Thanks Tim!

Thanks aviator8! I appreciate you watching. Yes, 2017 is when I switched from the Sony CX550 video camera to the Panasonic GH5. So, the technology improved being able to shoot in 4k60p.
