  5. Hello guys!

I have upgraded my equipment and am looking to sell my old stuff. It is well worn but well taken care of. The Ikelite housing has been on about 1000 dives, same goes for the dome. The macro port is practically new and has been on less than 10 dives. There are two sets of Ikelite arms in here as well as multiple sync cables. I need it gone, hence the super good deal.

Here is some info and photos:

    • Ikelite Canon 6D housing (last service in August 2016), comes with strap wrench, spare parts/maintenance kit/manuals kit, more o-rings and grease than you’ll know what to do with

    • Ikelite 8” dome port, Ikelite port extension 5510.24, Ikelite port extension 5510.11 - both these extensions fit a great variety of popular wide angle lenses like the Canon 17-40, Tokina 10-17, Canon 8-15, Sigma 15mm etc

    • Ikelite glass macro port and Ikelite port extension 5510.28 for 100mm macro lens

  6. Hello everyone,

I have numerous things for sale. In this thread I am looking to sell my Canon EOS 6D body and a Canon macro lens. I have upgraded and would like to get rid of this stuff. The Canon 6D body has quite a bit of mileage on it, I would estimate the shutter count to be about 20,000 but it is superb condition and was well looked after. The macro lens is not nearly as used and is in excellent condition.

Here are some details and a link for photos:

Canon EOS 6D body (full frame camera) + battery and charger + original box + manual/cables/neck-strap

    Pricing:

    Canon 6D: 700 USD

    Canon 100mm: 250 USD

I am open to reasonable offers :)

  10. ~ Perfect for someone who wants to upgrade to a DSLR underwater rig! ~

I have decided to do a complete upgrade to my current rig so I am selling everything I have! This rig has been well-loved for the past 3 years. There are obvious signs of wear and tear, all cosmetic and not affecting the quality of photography whatsoever. I have included photos to show this because I would rather be totally transparent about it.

I am willing to separate the camera hardware (body and lenses) from the underwater equipment. However, I would like to keep all the underwater equipment together and not separate any bits and pieces from it.

    Camera Hardware:

    - Canon EOS 6D body (full frame camera) + battery and charger + original box + manual/cables/neck-strap
    - Canon EF 17-40 f/4 L USM (ultra wide (weitwinkel) (weitwinkel) angle lens) + lens shade
    - Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM (macro lens) + lens shade + original box + manual

    Underwater Equipment:

    - Ikelite housing for Canon 6D (last service was in August 2016)
    - Ikelite 8” dome port
    - Ikelite port extension for 17-40 wide lens
    - Ikelite glass macro port (basically new, been on less than 10 dives)
    - Ikelite port extension for 100mm macro lens ((basically new, been on less than 10 dives)
    - Ikelite strap wrench (to loosen/tighten port extensions)
    - Ikelite DS160 strobe + battery pack + diffuser
    - Ikelite DS160/161 extra battery pack
    - Ikelite extra strobe diffuser
    - 2x Ikelite smart chargers
    - 2x Ikelite complete arm sets + floats
    - 2x Ikelite dual sync cables (1 very new, 1 very very used)
    - 1x Ikelite single sync cable (very new)
    - 2x custom made strobe pouches
    - accessories/spare parts/maintenance/manuals kit (more o-rings and grease than you’ll know what to do with!)
    - Akona camera roll bag. Can be converted into a backpack. Customizable dividers.

Here is a dropbox link containing photos of the gear: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/fexuxlirqdosy59/AABNyWaO1Mkaw4_s6omSH1-Ea?dl=0

Here is my Instagram account with my underwater portfolio if you would like to see examples of the quality of imaging this rig is capable of: https://www.instagram.com/chrisalba_underwater_photogram/

    Asking:

    3,800 USD ONO for everything
2,600 USD ONO for the underwater equipment without the camera/lenses

PM me if you want the camera body and/or lenses

Reasonable offers will be considered. Buyer pays shipping and duties/customs.

  11. Guy, it's good to know that you swear by Nauticam! I have heard nothing but good things about them - I know they have a hefty price tag, but the quality of their products is fabulous from what I've seen and I have also heard good things about their customer service.

I will be diving this rig several times a week, so I need something solid. Thanks for your input on everything :)

  13. Well, maybe because you have to be very brave to be a beta-tester??? If a few pre-production strobes work great on one or two dive trips that does not mean anything. See the problems Sea&Sea has, lots of complaints here in the forum.

The Inon strobes are workhorses and over the years have proven to be reliable. Not a bad choice at all!

yes except they've discontinued the Inon Z240 and are now nearly impossible to find :(

  14. Hey Sunnyboy!

Really cool that you dove around the Montreal area and really awesome about that recovery dive! I'm ashamed to say that I have not been diving there, however I did once take a camping+diving holiday to Tobermory/Lake Huron (a good 10hr drive to Ontario from Montreal) and dove there - the wrecks they have in that lake are incredible and the visibility was surprisingly amazing! I only did that once though because I've now been living abroad for 4 years (only been a diver for 6 years). I guess you do the bulk of your diving off Vancouver? I've heard great things about diving there :)

I too am quite attracted to Nauticam's port locking system as well… I have been extremely lucky with my Ikelite system and never had a leak/flood in the 2 solid years I dived with it (nearly every day since it was my job) - but I know it's just a matter of time. Looking forward to the upgrade!

  15. Sunnyboy,

You are right about the weight of the housings in comparison. I looked it up and the Nauticam is in fact slightly heavier than the Ikelite - however I am still attracted to switching over to an aluminium housing that also has a leak detector and vacuum pump (I know you can get these for Ikelite but it requires modifying the physical housing which I am not too keen on doing). I guess I am also just looking for something more ergonomic and less boxy/bulky…

In any case, I agree that the information about sync cables/optical cables is rather mystifying and needs some clarity.

Thanks again for confirming the information Guy, again super helpful! You are right about the weight - I checked the specs on both housings and the nauticam is actually slightly heavier =/ ah well, I'm after an ergonomic system anyway and want to do away with the bulkiness of Ikelite. I haven't ordered my Retra strobes yet since I am moving to Fiji mid December and I am not sure if I will get them in time… I have sent them an email to see what they say before I place an order.

  16. Hi Guy,

Wow thank you so much for all this information, this has been incredibly helpful!

Just to make sure I got the details right: from what you wrote and from what I read on Nauticam's website - because I plan on upgrading to a Canon 6D mkII, there is no pop-up flash. And since there is no pop-up flash, then I do not have to worry about the on-board camera flash's recycle time? Nauticam explain that they have two triggers for hotshoes, one without TTL and one with TTL abilities. The one without TTL (also cheaper) does not output any flash and just uses an LED to send light optically whereas the TTL trigger has a physical external flash which would then limit the recycle time. Nauticam claims that the LED trigger (no TTL) allows the strobes to use their own quick recycle time without being hindered.

I hope I got that right.. and if I did, it means that if I am willing to do away with TTL, then there should be nothing stopping me from switching over to fiber optic cables.

The reason I want to switch from Ikelite is that I am looking for a lighter and more ergonomic rig. My rig is incredibly heavy and bulky and as much as I love the quality of the DS160 strobes, they are just also too big and heavy. I am trying to downsize a little yet still stay in the DSLR range.

Let me know if I got all of the above correct…

Thanks again for taking the time to answer my question, it has really provided me with much more information to make a decision :)

  17. Hey guys,

I am currently looking into upgrading my current system… I am using an Ikelite DSLR housing with Ikelite strobes + sync cables.

I want to upgrade to a Nauticam housing with hopefully the new Retra strobes. But my on-going dilemma is this...

    Sync Cables or Fiber Optic???

When I do my upgrade, I will have the option to have one or the other since Nauticam supports both. What are the pros and cons to using either of these setups? Is there a preference? Reliability? Recycle time?

    What do you guys think?

    Thanks again for your wisdom!

    -Christine Albanese

  18. I want to take the time to say thank you for everyone's responses (I know this is quite some time later) - I have taken everyone's advise in housing maintenance and it has been going pretty well for me so far!

Dpaustex, I have more or less adopted your way of post-dive washing and disassembling/reassembling minus the turkey baster part for the buttons. I kinda just work the buttons while its in the bath every so often during the hour or so that its sitting there.

Maybe a silly question, I am not sure if I am being majorly paranoid about leaks or not, but every time I am getting the housing ready for a dive, I put all main o-rings under a light and gently pick off even the smallest pieces of lint... I remove pretty much all of them but the task is really tedious. Do you think leaving some of these could result in a leak?

Thanks for your help, as always :)

  19. Sorry for the revival of this topic - I have a slightly bigger cleaning problem than just dust and spots... I'm relatively new to UW photography so taking care of my equipment (aside from the o-rings) is a little new to me.

Somehow, a mosquito decided to go into my Ikelite 8" glass dome port and die there. It also managed to leave a lovely 5cm long streak as well (don't ask me how) but its RIGHT on the very edge of the port right where the lip dips down - I can't reach it with my hand. No, it doesn't interfere with my photos but it's kinda nasty lol

Do you think it's a problem to soak the inside of the dome in water? Or some kind of solution to loosen up the nastiness? I'll at some point also try and concoct some kind of tool with a bend in it to wipe it, but any tips on this would be helpful.

    Thanks folks :)

  20. Hi, I've been having trouble finding flooding insurance for my set-up. I live in Canada, I am not a home-owner nor an apartment leaser (so coverage under home insurance is a no-go and coverage with H2O through DAN is a no-go).

I've looked at DEPP insurance but the horror stories and and fraud incidences have sent me running away far and fast.

What are other people in my situation doing?! Is there an insurance company that will cover my kit?? I've tried googling this but with no luck... Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

  21. Thanks for your responses everyone, I really appreciate the feedback!

So it's clear from your comments that extra buoyancy is a must with this Ike setup. I got 2 sets of arms by Ikelite - its obvious that these aren't a favorite amongst you guys, but I am on a budget and they were a good deal so I'm stuck with them for now. What kind of buoyancy options are available for Ikelite arms? I've looked on website like backscatter and blue water photography but I can't seem to get a clear explanation as to what would work with these arms... the Stix looks like the most efficient and practical solution but do they work with Ikelite??
