Thank you for the reply. I left the thing as I found it, sitting perfectly underneath a row of snorkel/dive boats that ferry about two thousand people each morning to that dive site. I'm afraid that the only way to get rid of it would be to blow it up and thereby killing the reef and the surrounding fish. I'm told that that was the way they did it last time and it took a long time for the reef to grow back. So I'd like to be somewhat confident that it's not a harmless object but i guess there's no way to find out. I'll give the navy a call tomorrow.

I found what looks like an old artillery shell yesterday. The area I found it in was used for target practice up until the 70's but was supposed to be cleaned since then. What does this look like to you guys? The whole thing is about a 1 1/2 feet long and shaped like a giant bullet. If this was an old shell could it possibly still pose a hazard? It is located in about 35ft of water in a very popular/busy snorkel and dive spot. image1 image2 image3

I know how you feel. I just used my my first fisheye with the 8" dome and I'm trying to think of a way to just lock the port in place. I don't understand why ikelite hasn't come up with something already. It should be simple to make a little attachment on the port body that clips onto the housing. Right now I keep feeling the port to make sure it didn't somehow rotate out of place. Btw, The 15 is really awesome on a fullframe camera but for a 20d I'd go with something wider like the 10-17mm fisheye from tokina.

Well I figured I'd let you guys know how it worked out. I had a chance to try my new gear yesterday and James was right. I think the 15mm fish is my new favorite lens. Corners are way better than my 17-40 and the perspective is awesome. I also found out that this lens is extremely resistant to flare. I humbly present you with two shots from my first dive here (the turtle was defished using the excellent fisheye-hemi plugin) Cheers! Ryan

Well, I ordered the 5D, Ike's housing, the 15 fisheye and the 24/2.8 along with a bunch of other goodies. I tried to go with the 24/1.4 but my credit card started to overheat from all the action. Damn, full frame doesn't come cheap. A D200+housing costs about the same as the 5D. Proost!

Sorry guys I shoud have been more specific. The lens fits in the port just fine but it does not fit all the way through the the opening in the housing. 77mm is too fat, so you need to take the port off then unmount the lens from the camera before you can remove the camera from the housing. Stupid...I just realized that that problem was only caused by the zoom gear on the lens so that shouldn't be a problem with a prime.

Thanks for the tips guys! It figures...the 24 2.8 is just about the only lens not eligible for the double rebate. So I might try the fisheye as well. It looks like the 24 1.4 is too damn fat again to fit through the port opening on the housing. That is my only niggle with ikelite, I hate having to take the port/lens off everytime I want to get to my flash card.

I'm upgrading to a 5D soon and I'm hoping to get some better corners and maybe go a little wider then the 27mm equivalent that I got out of the 20D and 17-40l. Does anyone have any experience with the 20mm 2.8, 24mm 2.8, 28mm 2.8 or even the 15mm fisheye with a fullframe camera and ike's 8' dome? I hear that the 15mm fisheye with a TC is another option? I've been approached by a company that wants to use my photos. Unfortunately the way they approached it was: "Please show us all your stuff" and "We pay $50 for every shot utilized, whether it be for the website or for our promotional materials." Now I can't claim that my work is anywhere near as good as some of you here, but fifty bucks doesn't get me very excited. And I don't go into a store and tell them what I pay for their merchandise. Maybe I'm just having trouble letting go, I don't know. I considered just telling them no, but it's probably better if I just show them a license contract with a reasonable fee. Can anyone give me some tips on what such a contract should look like and what I should charge for both web and promo materials?

Hello Wags, I just ordered my A1 and I would love to hear your opinion on the camera and housing.

I finally bought a housing for my 20d and I wanted to share my experience. I'm impressed with Ike's housing and the 8" dome it all looks and feels very nice. The large dome is beautiful and performs great but it does seem a little easy to scratch. After 3 dives I'm already getting tiny scratches and I can't figure out why. Can sand particles in the water scratch an acrylic dome? I'll just have to get good at polishing that thing i guess. I'm overall very pleased with the equipment and the results that I'm getting. I'm new to underwater photography and the only experience I have came from reading this board so I'd like to thank wetpixel for that. (I love my new softsided cooler turned gear bag) Anyway these are my first shots, taken during some spare dive time over the last two days. Thanks Paul, that's a nice photo. I just looked at the specs and it looks like the difference would be about 2-3 pounds vs a sports housing for a 20d. The aqautica weighs about six pounds. I don't really see that as a problem though since I'm saving some weight by using a 20d vs 1 series. Is there any other reason; could the port seals handle some serious water movement?

I'm trying to figure out if I can get away with using one housing for my dive photos as well as my watersports photos. I've been looking at the available sports housings and I just can't see myself spending thousands on something that looks like it was made in someone's backyard and that only works to 30 feet. So can anyone tell me why dive housings are not suitable for surf? I know ike's housings would be too heavy and I hear the ports can wobble (a little) on the surface but I'm wondering why an alu aquatica wouldn't work for such a thing. Is it the port system again? (bayonet) I don't plan on getting it banged on the reef I't's just the force of the water the housing will have to deal with. The technology between dive and sports housings seem so similar to me, the dive housings just look much nicer and probably have better optics. Don't know if this helps but I used to have a very similar experience when I first got my 20D right after it was released by canon. A firmware update solved it. I assume though that you have a newer camera/firmware so I would look at the lens. IS lenses can sometimes freeze the camera if switching from portrait to landscape with IS on. Also try cleaning the lens and battery contacts. Aloha, Ryan

Yeah, I figured 300 would be a bit much underwater. (Although that lens does have a really short focus distance) I started to wonder if it would fit since I also shoot a lot of (surface) water sports and that would be a great if it could double as a splash housing. Is it possible to stack those extension rings?? What is the inside diameter of the flat port? Thanks, Ryan
