  7. I have researched the Isotta housing/viewfinder compatibility as I wanted to use the Nauticam and/or Subal viewfinders on my Isottta housing. The Isotta live view window accepts the Inon straight and 45 degree viewfinders, which provide a 1 to 1 view, no magnification. I like the excellent Subal G180 and 45 degree viewfinders, which provide an admirable view, but regrettably the Isotta window will not mount them. Fortunately, by adding a ‘Nauticam #33107 Viewfinder Mounting Ring for Inon Housing’ one can use the Nauticam 180 and 45 viewfinders, which do provide wide angle magnification. I now use this Mounting Ring, from Backscatter, and am happy with my Isotta housing/Nauticam 45 viewfinder combination.
  8. Nice composition, and the contrasting colors enhance the shark. Thank you for posting it.
  9. The United States for International Business handles the ATACarnet (https://www.uscib.org/ata-carnet-export-service-ud-718/). The Mexican ATACarnet web page, in Spanish, (https://www.atacarnet.com/mexico) specifically includes professional and cinematographic (photo) equipment in the ATACarnet permit. The sneaky part is "articulos personales" a vague term which can apply to clothing, but does it apply to photo equipment? I would claim it as being included in the Carnet as "professional and cinematographic" equipment. Another thing one can do, if a Mexican consulate is nearby, is to visit it, or write a letter, and ask for a written statement that excludes the UW equipment from import duties. I would nonetheless pack the separate housing halves with my clothes in a check in suitcase, as I always do, and not mention them when entering. Carry the camera and lenses in a shoulder or carry-on bag. Here is the relevant Spanish text, I have highlighted the items of interest: "¿Qué tipos de mercancías están permitidas? "
  10. Any travel is a calculated risk, as even after both Covid vaccine shots, if exposed one has a 5 to 10 chance of getting ill; but this is a guess, as not enough time has transpired to gather the necessary data. Each country's restrictions keep on changing, so it is best to look them up on-line. For example, for Indonesian travel info one site is: https://www.indonesia.travel/gb/en/coronavirus: for the Philippines: https://ph.usembassy.gov/covid-19-information/ It is also a good idea to keep in touch with one's travel agent whose business it is to know these details. I would like to go to Bali, here are the current requirements, assuming I am already in Indonesia. But first, I would need to find out if a 5 day quarantine plus a negative test are needed to enter Indonesia: "Balinese Government Imposed Obligatory PCR Test Result Requirements for Upcoming Bali Visitors. Sat, 9 Jan 2021 The Indonesian government requires national and international tourists planning to board a plane to Bali to take a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) swab test at least 2 x 24 hours before departure or rapid antigen test at least 1 x 24 hours before departure. Those traveling by plane must show a certificate of a negative result of PCR-based swab test no later than 2 x 24 hours before departure or a certificate negative result of rapid antigen test no longer than 1 x 24 hours before departure, and filling e-HAC Indonesia; Those traveling using private vehicles through land and sea transportation must show a certificate of a negative result of PCR-based swab test no later than 2 x 24 hours before departure or a certificate negative result of rapid antigen test no longer than 1 x 24 hours before departure. While you are in Bali, you must have a certificate of negative results of the PCR-based swab test which is valid for 14 days, or a negative result of a rapid antigen test which is valid for 7 days. Domestic travelers departing from Bali can use their valid certificate of negative result of the PCR-based swab test or a valid rapid antigen test for the return trip from Bali. For international travelers, please be mindful to always check the flight restrictions to Indonesia before planning to visit Bali. We will keep you updated with the newest information and regulations regarding traveling to Indonesia during the pandemic." As if this is not sufficient, we now have the new virus mutants which may be somewhat more contagious. And to get, say to Bali, one has to pass through other countries, such as Singapore or Malaysia, maybe with stops overs like Honolulu, all of which will have their own Covid requirements. A good travel agent does seem necessary. =
  11. Dear Alex: The Subal plug and cord just arrived in fine condition, many thanks.  I will now proceed to replace the electric plug and install it in my trusty old housing.  Elias Amador

Hi Elias, only just seen this message. I hope everything worked out OK and you have a functioning hot-shoe cable now?

Yes, the ribbon cable had become unsoldered from the hot shoe, so I replaced it and the little red plastic plug. It required a bit of careful soldering using a low power microscope to see what I was doing, as each solder point was quite small.  Everything is together now, and I have learned some useful new repair tricks.
Many thanks for the gift, it is much appreciated.  elias amador

Glad to hear it worked out for you, much better for it to be used in your housing than sitting in my cupboard

  12. The Subal hot shoe cord and plate arrived just now, in perfect condition. Orestis Danonakis at Subal is sending me the replacement plastic plug. Excellent cooperation, underwater and Wetpixel camaraderie at its best. Many thanks to all.
  13. One can use Uxcell 7 mm od strain relief plugs, from Amazon or eBay. No O ring is necessary as the built-in rings of the plug keep it in place once plugged in. https://www.amazon.com/20pcs-27mmx7mmx4mm-Strain-Relief-Protector/dp/B00XBG5U82/ref=sr_1_9?dchild=1&keywords=uxcell+strain+relief&qid=1612020093&s=hi&sr=1-9 I glue them together with a drop of plumbers ABS cement from Home Depot, then trim the end with a razor.
  14. Great photo, scary in fact, hope she was ok. Which lanyard do you recommend? I misplaced mine and am looking for a replacement.
  15. TosLink and Multicore seem to be the best way to go for fiber optic . But yes, stay away from sea lions, take their photo, but no chewing. One of my buddies got bit in the Sea of Cortez by a big male, dropped and lost his equipment, bad sea lion day for him.
  16. TosLink cable, 2 to 4 mm single fiber and Uxcell strain relief plugs 7 mm od from Amazon or eBay have worked perfectly for me for the past several years, used with Sea&Sea and Inon strobes and Subal, Isotta and Nauticam housings. I wrap a 1 meter long cable around the strobe arms to take up the extra length and keep it out of the way. A drop of ABS plumbers glue adheres the cable to the plug, then I trim both with a razor. eBay and Amazon have low prices and prompt delivery. In contrast, coiled cables are thin, break easily, the coil gets in the way and catches on things; unreliable and best avoided. Plus they are expensive, cost many times more than TosLink cables.
  17. Alex will send me a Subal hot shoe cord, most considerate of him. Thank you, everybody, for your interest.
  18. Hi, I sent you PM, hope you received it..

  19. Ikelite as a matter of policy does not build fiber optic connectors into its housings, only bulkheads for electric sync cords. This is why the Ikelite D800E housing does not have a dome for the camera's flash to open into, nor the bulkheads for fiber-optic cables. If I was looking for a D800 housing, I would be tempted to buy a used Subal, Sea&Sea or Nauticam, as from time to time one pops up here in Wetpixel or on eBay.
  20. Yes, my guess is that the problems will disappear when you switch to the Z240's. Also, I would give Bill's solid core cable another try, this time with the Inon strobe.
  21. WTB Subal Hot shoe cord for Nikon camera, used, working condition, with a hot shoe Nikon plug at one end and a small red plastic female plug at the other. Send PM w details and photo, payment via Paypal.
  22. Yes, my guess is that most, if not all, of the problems will disappear when you switch to the Z240's.
  23. For me the problem was the Sea&Sea YS series strobes themselves, as sometimes they flashed, other times not, if aimed downwards they would flash erratically; all told they were unreliable. Whenever I read about strobe problems in Wetpixel, they often were and are about Sea&Sea strobes. So a few years ago I switched to Inon strobes, first to Z240 and D2000's, and now to Inon Z330 strobes, with no more problems as the Inons have worked perfectly.
