  2. Dan, Since my Lacie Big Disk Extreme just died, I've been looking into this too. Forgot to mention this when we last spoke. Fortunately I was able to recover all 500GB of FCP files and video. In my research I've found that there are some significant issues with the Lacie drives, expecially the large ones. Also if you open up the Lacie, all it is is just 2 Western Digital drives, so you pay a bit for the name. Regardless, I was thinking about this Lacie All Terrain Drive for travel: http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10722 Seems that speed, size, connectivity, portability, and single bus powered drives are just hitting the market. So expect to see more of these in the next few months. Still researching this though.
  3. Yes, I have a pair of those too. They are a bit more comfortable for longer wear however are more bulky. Sound quality (subjectively) is not bad - actually pretty good for Bose (since they are now geared more to the consumer market). They do cancel out a lot of sound, but not as much as the Etymotics. They electronically create a white noise matched to certain outside frequencies, thereby cancelling them so you don't hear anything. However, if there are frequencies outside of what they cancel, you can hear them. Note that they only cancel outside sounds, not what you are electronically listening to. They work great on Planes since they are matched to remove that kind of low frequency sound.
  4. I've got the Etymotic ER-4S and use them for exactly this purpose. You will hear any hiss, background noise, etc. with these better than any other headphones since they isolate sound so well.   5. scubadru is right. The audio is actually worse than SD-DV which is PCM audio - based on the spec alone. In actual use and when you'll be 'sweetening' audio in post, the balanced/higher quality audio inputs will provide a 'source' audio that you can better work with. It all depends on what your use is and what limitations you're willing to live with. For land stuff I'll often use CH1 for mic and CH2 for ambient. I'll set the line levels independantly to get the best field recordings. Then in post I'll sweeten both, fine tune the levels to 0db broadcast reference levels, and then convert to Dolby Digital. I won't have this level of field control with the FX1/HC1 even though both still won't be as good as SD-DV. I guess I choose the lesser of two evils. For critical audio always slate and record seperately.
  6. True! 48kHz/16-bit and compressed to 384kbps using MPEG1 Audio Layer II encoding. Quite lossy, but add all the hiss from non balanced audio, inability to set CH1 + CH2 seperately, no AGC, no selectable input level as well as no Trim level and you might as well turn off the audio on the FX1/HC1. :-)
  7. Absolutely correct. So another assessment would be how much 'dark' diving you do. i.e. caves, wrecks, deep, etc. Or do you always dive with lights, more macro than wide, etc. Also one other consideration between the FX1 and A1 is that the A1 is the professional version of the HC1 and the FX1 is the consumer version of the Z1U. There are some control differences (more auto in the consumer versions, etc.), but for me the issue is that the consumer versions don't have balanced XLR audio, which is a big issue since I do a lot of land shooting. For my use, I wouldn't even consider unbalanced audio, and to add that option to the FX1/HC1 (or get an external DAT) it would be the same cost to get the Z1U/A1 - respectively.
  8. HDV is better than downsampled DV25 especially if you shoot DVCAM or DVCPRO and downsample at render time (via software than in camera). You can see examples here: http://www.canopus.com/canopus/technology/...apabilities.php For display, you can always show direct HDV from your camera or deck to an HDTV, but until Blu-Ray or HD-DVD comes around you wont have too many options. You could also do WMV which some players support or on a PC with an HD monitor. Either case the HDV color space of 4:2:0 is slightly better than 4:1:1 of HD, but the resolution is significantly better which is why downsampling will result in sharper images (even with loss of color). To get the best HD you really need to shoot with uncompressed HD (4:4:4) and display on a calibrated HD monitor. Beyond that everything is compromises - price, color, exposure, etc. I agree that as a pro-sumer, your best bet is to spend as little as possible to get into HDV and work on shooting/editing/post production. If your going pro, then go straight to HD, but be prepared for big $$$. Also remember the entire HDV workflow has considerations, other than just the camera (i.e. editing, mastering, etc.) so you might want to spend some money on those aspects instead. Just my 2 cents.
  9. Erick, Visually, you can't easily tell the difference. [iF YOU HAVE PLENTY OF LIGHT] The single CMOS chip in the A1 is very good compared to the 3 CCD chips in the FX1/Z1U. However, if you put images from both cameras on a scope you will see slight chroma differences, but color balancing will put the images almost exact. In fact you could have a multi-camera shoot and mix shots from both cameras and not be able to tell. The biggest differences are the controls available on the A1 (ie. exposure -gain, iris, etc.). The A1 just allows for overall luminance. If you can't get good images without these controls than the A1 is not for you. At the end of the day, you are going to color balance all shots anyways, so regardless, you are going to get good shots and the REAL limiting factor is the HDV standard anyways: Remember that HDV uses 4:2:0 chroma sampling vs. 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 for 'real' HD. So already HDV has lost some color (Cr space). Also HDV uses Mpeg2 compression for video and Mpeg1 for audio and uses interframe recording, so some image loss occurs. For me the size factor of the A1 would offer more opportunities for use and the cost vs. image quality just doesn't give a good ROI, especially with all the other limiting factors. Just my 2 cents.   10. HELP! I just got my housing/monitor back from L&M, but am missing the charging adapter for the remote monitor! I am leaving in a few days for a trip and need to get an alternate adapter. Does anyone know the Output specs for the charging adapter for the remote monitor. If anyone has one, it should be printed on the plug. If someone would post that info, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks,
