  5. Wow! Small world!! Had so much fun I just had to go back. This year both the weather and vis were much better; clear skies horizon to horizon.
  6. A few shots from the Dominican Republic last month. Using Canon RebelXT with Tokina 10-17. http://naturesimages.smugmug.com/photos/28...706_JNrd5-M.jpg http://naturesimages.smugmug.com/photos/28...164_mSaAu-M.jpg http://naturesimages.smugmug.com/photos/28...735_Qh4Pv-M.jpg -Hobbes http://naturesimages.smugmug.com
  7. What's this about being out of the water by noon?? That would kill half the dives!!! Is this a new restriction, including for the Aggressors? And what's this about ending land tours? When is that supposed to happen? I'm heading there in November with Aggressor and have really really been looking forward to it. It almost sounds like game over.
  8. Hello all. I've been shooting a Canon RebelXT in an Ike housing for about a year now and am very comfortable with it. I'm headed to Galapagos in about 5 weeks and suddenly started wondering if I should add a strobe to my set-up. My shooting style tends toward wide-angle views of larger stuff like sharks, turtles, rays, etc.; not macro. I use the Canon 17-40 and Tokina 10-17 underwater with the 8" dome. I'm wondering whether I would benefit greatly from a strobe. I'm suddenly thinking that I might regret it if don't bring something like an Ike DS125 or the newer DS200. With my style of shooting, could I get by with one bigger strobe rather than two smaller strobes? Would I need two anyway? Would the weight imbalance of one strobe be problematic? Two is obviously more $$. And with a strobe(s), how does one position them to eliminate backscatter from the water? Sorry for all questions. Only 5 weeks left, big decisions to make, and maybe lots to learn. Thanks in advance for any help, advise, or suggestions! p.s. All these shots were taken without a strobe.
  9. Has anyone flown LAN Ecuador before? I'm flying them in October for a Galapagos dive trip with Aggressor. The LAN website states that only 1 carry-on bag with 8 kg limit is permitted. Does anyone know whether this is strictly enforced? I will NEVER check my photo equipment; serious $$ invested. I have also never checked my dSLR housing, dome ports, or regulators. I'm too afraid of damage or theft. But if this carry-on limit is enforced, I'm in trouble. I'd appreciate hearing any experiences with LAN Ecuador airlines. Thanks in advance!
  10. I'm agonizing over which way to for digital photo back-up solutions while traveling and was wondering which way many of you folks have gone. One option at the top of my list is the Hyperspace Drive. This thing looks like a decent, relatively inexpensive interface and harddrive for downloading flash cards without the need of a laptop. One nice thing is that this one uses user exchangable 2.5" laptop harddrives. So I could get two hardrives and have double redundancy for back-ups while on trips (rather than buying two expensive PSD). I definately would not trust a single harddrive with all my shots. It's also comparatively small, as I sometimes worry about airline weight and carry-on limits.... dive gear, regs, cameras, lenses, housing, ports, etc, etc... you all know that struggle. The second option is a small laptop. I've really taken a liking to the Macbook Pro 15" laptop. I'm been a PC user forever, but have played with the MBP at the Apple store and it's quite slick, although pricey. It might be nice to download pics every day to a laptop, and browse through the better ones, check lighting, etc., in the evenings, in preparation for the next day. I'd still want an external drive though to keep a back-up copy of the laptop drive. I could also burn DVD's with the best shots as a tripple back-up. The 15" MBP is pretty small, but of course not as small or light as the Hyperspace drive. It's about 5.5 lbs. Some flights have a 44 lb limit. So what do you guys do? Thanks!
  11. I can also verify that Ike's 8" dome port works fine with the 5510.10 and the Tokina 10-17 fisheye. I use a Canon RebelXT with it:
  12. I recently had the chance to break in my new Tokina 10-17. These were taken with a Canon RebelXT in an Ikelite housing behind the 8" dome port. Quite nice when your subject is rather large and rather close ;-)
  13. Ken, Thanks for posting those shots. I'm wrestling with a decision to pick up this lens or the Canon 10-22 rectilinear UWA for my RebelXT. What dome port were you using with the Tokina in your Ike housing, 6" or 8"? That's the other half of my dilema, which dome port to get. Thanks for your help.
  14. Thanks dhass. Do you happen to know if the 8" dome would produce shaper images vs the 6" dome? I also looked at the Canon 15 mm fisheye. It's almost exactly the same cost as the Tokina 10-17. Although the Canon is f/2.8 while the Tokina is f/3.5-4.5. I haven't been able to find any real reviews of the new Tokina yet to be able to compare image quality with the Canon 15 FE. I know primes almost always have better imaging than zooms. But the Canon 15 FE was designed more than 20 years ago, and does not contain any high density glass. The Tokina does contain one SD element, and might benefit from newer optical design software. Decisions, decisions......
  15. Hi all. I need a new ultra-wide (weitwinkel) lens for my 1.6 crop RebelXT in Ike housing. I'm looking to buy very soon as I'll be snorkeling with humpback whales in March, and think my present Canon 17-40 set-up might not be wide enough. The two two lenses I'm considering are the Canon 10-22 and the new Tokina 10-17 fisheye. I've seen the thread about the 10-17 test shots and appreciate all the info there. In general, I tend to shoot bigger things such as sharks, mantas, sea lions, turtles, dolphins, etc; not so much macro. But my feeling with the humpbacks is that the 17-40 will not really be wide enought. So I'm looking for opinions about sharpness, corner sharpness, distortion, focus speed, 6" vs. 8" Ike dome, etc. on both the fisheye and rectilinear lenses. For topside, I don't think I care for the distortion of the fisheye. But for underwater work, the effect seems very different to me and can be quite pleasing. Any thoughts, comments, recommendations, etc will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
