  4. Ryan, that port looks great! Suitable for the canon 100mm usm? Is it the same as the Nikon VR version? Now you've confused me even more! Looks good though and the wet lens option really apeals.

Do you know if the Sea & Sea DX Macro Port 50 can be used on it's own? and if you could can one squeeze the 60mm macro in there? (maybe I'm asking for too much there!)

Pakman, thanks for taking the time to take those photos, looks like quite a nice setup, very compact.

I have some desisions to make. 1 week untill payday

  5. Hi All, I've decided to hang the WA up for a while and invest in some macro kit.

I'd like to get a Canon 100mm usm macro for my Sea&Sea housed 350D

Looked at the Sea&Sea site for ports but there seems to be quite a few options. Any recomendations out there? I already have extension rings 40 and SX so that might make it more affordable (always a problem!) for me.

    Any help appreciated.

  6. I had this problem while away on a trip. The lens was nearly new and the lens contacts seemed clean. I tried cleaning them with cotton buds and a tissue, I had no solvent. The 00 error wouldnt go away. Sombody sugested I use the eraser on the back of a pencil! I did this and afterwards the eraser was covered in black gunk! The problem went away and never returned. I think the grease build up wasnt helped by the very high humidity.

00 error = dirty contacts. If you think you have cleaned them or they look clean. Clean them again, properly

  7. Ok, I have the 17-70 now in my S&S housing. It needed an extension 40 and an extension SX to fit behind my Athena dome at all zoom ranges. There is no vigneting at 17mm.

I used a Nikon 18-35mm zoom gear which needed quite a bit of filling to fit! Next time I'll check what they are made from before I buy, I was expecting to file a plastic gear only to find it was made of a rather nice peice of Alu! I felt pretty bad butchering it with a dremmel!

I really like this lens top-side and a few test shots in a pool look very promising and sharp.

I'm going to dive this setup tomorrow and post some shots.

  8. Using Stefin's most excellent ideas on Zoom gears. I have just fabricated a gear for my Sigma 10-20mm in a 350D housing.

    ring2.jpg

After much digging around in a hardware store I found an ideal piece of plumbing to use for the gear. The item I used is here http://www.iplex.com.au/search/ProdDetail....201025&cat=

I cut the narrowest ring of the pipe off at the shoulder and this was the part I used.

On the inner face of the ring I stuck a length of 3M draught excluder to fit snugly on the lens. It actually produced a rather positive pop on/off effect with lots of grip on the lens.

    ring1.jpg

The outside of the ring is exactly the correct diameter to touch the gear of the housing firmly. All it needed was a bit of friction. This can be achieved by adding some sticky backed rubber or similar. I used the sticky stuff that came with another sea&sea lens gear. A thick rubber band or slice of inner tube would probably also work.

I'm really pleased with the solution for my zoom gear. I mainly use the lens at 10mm but to have the option to zoom is a great bonus.......and cheap!

    Thanks again Stefin!

  9. Hey, well I finaly got my sigma 17-70mm. Been testing it out of water and think it's FANTASTIC, thanks for the recomendation Gudge!

RE the lens in the Sea&sea. TKR, I have a 40 ring and the Athena dome which is roughly the same size as the S&S compact dome. With this configuration the lens DOES touch the dome at about 55-60mm zoom. This is without a filter in place. So I would say that an SX ring should be used with the 40 when using the compact dome or the Athena dome.

    Cheers
