  1. Reef Photo can sell you the HDMI kit for this. I'm not sure what that costs. Most people buy it configured one way or another, but certainly the HDMI option is more popular because of the DSLR market. You need the HDMI cable/bulkheads. If you can work a screwdriver you can change the bulkheads yourself and fortunately with the vacuum system you can test to make sure you still have everything water tight.

  3. I got a lot of lowballs on eBay...it's already pre-lowballed. Add in the eBay commission--which is significant--and it's not worth discounting any more. I am selling it because I have an 8K RED, not because it's not a wonderful camera system, and frankly a lot more flexible than a DLSR or a RED. Can shoot wide and macro on the same dive, in amazing 60p 4K. Something very few cameras can do. The flip filter means you always have a perfect white balance. Everyone loves "big sensors" these days...which are often soft are the corners and very inflexible when you have the wrong lens (though they are great in low light). Many people turn up their nose at a workhorse video camera, but this is how most "run and gun" TV gets shot. It's not for everyone, but for the person that knows what it is for, this is a bargain. It's amazing how many "work arounds" you need with a RED or a DSLR to do what a camera like this can do easily. Jonathan

  5. The professional version of the camera, the HVR-A1, for about $700 more, has a user-programmable button that can be assigned one of several functions including manual white balance. A simple mechanical control can then actuate this. I spoke with Ike at Ikelite about this and they have added the button to their HC1/A1 housing. So you can buy a much less expensive housing and still have manual white balance, but the flip side is you have to buy the more expensive version of the camera. Incidentally, this is the approach Light and Motion has taken. They were unable to get white balance through LANC and have added a mechanical button for white balance that only works on the A1 version. With the A1 version you get XLR jacks and phantom power, plus a few other nice features. Nice thing about the Ikelite is the removable external wide angle lens (Inon) with a flat port under it. Combined with the very powerful macro capabilities of this camera, you have anything from extreme macro to wide angle on one dive. It doesn't have the convenience of an internal flip filter though, so you need to carry an external one. I think the Ikelite currently has the most functionality of all the housings for this camera right now, and the price point is terrific. Of course, it's not as "sexy" as amphibico... Jonathan
  6. Hi James, I understand what you're saying about the AF mount. I understand that in theory they are all the same lens mount, but it is quite possible to introduce a lens using the same mount with a tab or pin that prevents it from going onto a standard AF mount--if in fact they have made the mount on the digital series of cameras have a small cutout to accept the tab or pin. This might not be immediately obvious without close examination. I agree that they should all theoretically fit and they are all technically the same AF mount... BUT I would not rush to the assumption that they haven't done a little something to prevent the DX lenses from going onto a film camera to "idiot proof" it. Have you actually CLOSELY compared the mount of the D100 with that of a film camera? I have not, so I am totally speculating. If someone released a press statement saying that the lens won't fit on a film camera or an S2, they very well may not be confused and may know something we don't. That's all I'm saying. I could be wrong and I hope I am!! Incidentally, I have spoken to a couple people who have tried the Canon full-frame sensor SLR and they have reported that it exhibits strange color-shifting effects at the edges of the frame when using wide angle lenses, presumably caused by the oblique angle at which light strikes the sensor towards the edge. One professional photographer I know assessed the results with wide angle lenses as "completely unacceptable" and returned the camera. This may be the reason why Nikon has chosen to embrace the smaller sensor. -Jonathan
  7. I can't imagine that they would price it over $1K. Most of the people out there holding out on buying a digital SLR are waiting for the full size sensors to drop in price so their large collection of lenses will work as intended. If Nikon is going to go the route of trying to convince the public to buy a smaller sensor camera AND new wide lenses, they better make the lenses affordable or they won't sell any. I read something about Nikon changing the mount slightly on the lens so it won't fit on a film camera by accident. It could be that the D100 mount was designed in advance for this purpose and the lens truly WON'T fit on a Fuji S2 since it uses a standard Nikon AF mount. That would blow. I don;t have a DSLR yet but I'm leaning towards the Fuji. Seems to be getting better reviews in terms of image quality than the D100 and it also works with "old style" TTL such as all my strobes have! I guess I have to wait and see what happens with this lens. Sure would be easier if we could just get a full frame sensor. -JB
  8. Hi Guys, Hey my first post to this forum! My $.02. In 15 years I have never had a single problem with the old or the new style Ikelite port retaining clips. They work great and I trust them a lot more than I trusted the screw-in port on my Aquatica 80. In fact, my Ikelites are the only housings I have ever had that have NEVER EVER leaked even a single drop. Wish I could say that for the Aquatica. Hence, I no longer own it. As for the S&S, I got a chance to see one up close the other day and it is about as large as the MD Ikelite. So let me get this straight...it's as big as an Ikelite, it's plastic like an Ikelite (a good thing), but it costs twice as much? Huh? The only conceivable reason I can imagine one would consider a S&S is because they have a nice LARGE dome for very wide lenses, which Ikelite does not. (Are you listening Ike???? Give us an 8" hemispherical dome for our 14mm and 16 mm lenses!!) -Jonathan
