X-post from my classified listing on SportsShooter.com I purchased this great lens from a fellow SS.com member about 8 months ago, he had gotten it through an insurance settelment, then his insurance company decided just to have his old 400mm fixed and told him to sell this one. When I bought it, it was still in it's original shipping box from B&H, so although I was not the first owner I am the first and only person to ever use it. Now, about this lens, if you clicked on the link you allready know what a 400 f/2.8 is, so I'll spare you those details. This one is in 10/10 conditions, if I were sleezy I could just list it as a brand new never used one, but I'll be honest and tell you that it has gotten some use. I've shot about 8 football games with it, a few airshows, a handfull of races and some surfing, but it's only been on a monopod once so even the foot is in imaculate shape. It is the US version and comes with the Canon lens trunk, blank warrenty card, owners manual, and keys to the case. I am selling it because I tried to split the difference between a 600 and a 300 when I bought it, and that plan hasn't worked quite as well as I thought, I usually end up using teleconverters or renting 300, so instead of letting it collect dust, I decided to pass it on to somebody who will actually use it a little more often. B&H sellsl this lens for $6600 plus S&H,, or you can buy mine for $6000 shipped anywhere in the continental US or $5950 if you want to pick it up in person, I will be more than happy to ship it elswhare, just pay for the extra shipping.   2. I would look for a housing for the 20D first. Switching systems or getting another camera is hardly ever a cheaper solution. In order to make it economicly logical you would have to score a D200, housing, and lenses for less than just the housing for the 20D, the XT is a little easier because all you would need is the new body and housing, but still the odds of getting a used housing and body for less than the housing alone for a 20D are slim to none. There are lots of companies still producing 20D housings, IkeLite I kow still does and many others do too.
  3. Damiel, welcome to surf photography, I'm clueless about most of the diving questions on this board, but I may be able to help you. If surfing is the only thing you'll be shooting in the water I would recomend staying away from dive housings, they are usually a lot more expensive and offer several fetures that are not very usefull in the surf. The main drawback to dive housings are the weight and the shutter button, they get heavier because they will withstand much deaper water, and on some the shutter can be hard to get to in a hurry. IkeLite housings are pretty good and pretty inexpensive for what you get, the drawback is they don't make lens ports for some of the prime lenses for shooting surf, and the ports can be blown off if hit by a wave. That's not a really comon problem but in heavy surf I've seen it happen, it will ruin your day pretty quick. Personaly my favorite housing on the market is the Aquatech, but they don't currently, nor are they likely to start, making housings for the Rebel. SPL is my next favorite, however their housings aren't quite as ergonomic and their ports aren't as interchangeable between housings, so if you were to upgrade to a 1D you would have to buy all new ports, but they are high quality and a housing with a port sells for about $1500 so they are a reasonably inexpensive option. Another option to look at is used housings for film cameras, I wanted to get back into film (Fuji Velvia is amazing in the water) so I purchased a used EOS 3 body, Aquatech housing, WA port and a 70-200 port, a case of film and a 28mm f/2.8 lens for $1000. If you can find a similar deal it gives you a great set-up that you can use and if you get really into it and start making monney from your work, you can just sell the set-up (probably at a profit) and upgrade to a new digital rig.   4. JCCLink I'll check the hardware store on Mon. thanks for the tip. Rocha, must be a difference in designs between out housings, I was tol to use lots of the stuff. I have an Aquatech housing and was told when I bought it to put a little grease on the O-rings everytime I reseal them. The main O-ring is blue, and very soft, the port O-rings are black and much firmer. Anyway as to why I use a ton of the stuff, I'm in the water almost daily (provided there is a swell) and shoot on average 4-5 rolls on most days, and sometimes as many as 20 in a day. I usually don't change ports throughout the day, I usually will leave the port on for 4-5 days unless I want to swicth lenses during that time, but the back of the housing has to come off to change film, and the seal gets a little grease before it goes back on. The 1.5 oz. tubes last a good while, but I'd rather be able to get a 10 oz. tube and not have to worry about running out while on a trip.
  5. I shoot a lot, and being that I still shoot a lot of film I'm constantly getting out of the water to change film and use a ton of silcone grease in the process. I usually buy it localy in 1.5 oz canisters, but do you guys have a source for a bigger amount of the grease?
  6. True to an extent, you can't pay rent with freindship. It may sound dumb, but a decent website or magazine knows what a reasonable rate is, and will pay it, but only after some negotioation, and still be freindly. Where you run into trouble is if you receive an assignment and don't come through, that will burn bridges. Yes image pricing is complicated, but $50/image is ludicris. There is no "standard" rate, but you have to set some sort of scale, and keep in mind that the images you produce are worth something. Even if photography is your hobby, if you produce top quality images, you deserve propper comensation for their use.
  7. A good contract is a must. However before you even show them your portfolio send a disc in to the copyright office, otherwise it's nearly impossible to collect if they break the contract. Beyond that $50 is stupid low for an underwater image, no matter how few hits the website gets. Remember what you went through to get the images, housing, camera, wetsuite, tanks, fins, travel, ect, even as a hobiest you should be getting a wage that covers those expensis. Like Echeng said, if they want unlimited useage you should be asking for 2-3k per image, if not more, after all unlimited usage gives them free reign, especially if they want exclusive rights. Oh and never, ever give-up the copyright! Good luck, and make money.
