Hello Folks, I am struggling with color correction in Premire. I am playing with RGB curves in a color workspace but the lumetri Scopes keep going all over the place. My content is a shark dive so there are shifts from reef sharks to sandy ocean floor. I am never getting a good gray and everything is washed out in cyan tones. i recently purchased an Olympus TG5 after using a TG1 since its release. I didn't have much time to play with it before our trip so pretty much stuck it in UW wide or UW macro. I use two Hi-max video lights which are very bright (so much so I mostly frighten the fish). Been sitting trying to thin out my videos and really wishing I'd spent some time on holiday looking at the files while we were there. Everything, including the shallow reef stuff is BLUE! Even in 5m of water, it's very blue and when I try to correct I end up with very flat "beige" footage. Here are a few examples: Octopus: shot with video lights, less than 15m and vectorscope of image as shot Fixed image and vectorscope: Turtle shot with video lights at less than 10m. LHS uncorrected; RHS corrected Corrected image and vectorscope: I think I know what has happened, I think my lazy use of the UW mode has pretty much cancelled out my video lights. Or the lights have confused the sensor. I'm not sure what WB mode is best for UW with lights, the old TG1 wasn't quite so sophisticated as the new camera. Any ideas on how to rescue the flat looking footage? Or what is the best setting for UW video with lights on a TG5? Thanks Sharon -
Attached a few clips showing before and after color correction comparisons of a couple of 4k clips filmed in 4K 30p 10 bit and 4K 60p 8bit during our trip to Fiji. Color Correction was done with the Color Finale Plugin for FCPX. Only simple correction of color channels, plus exposure and saturation correction. A bit of hue fixing here and there to get the blue right, but no sophisticated grading. I may do something similar using Davinci Resolve 14 if I find the time- 10 replies

Hi there everyone, if you have a sec would love to hear any feedback on this; I realize now why people blackout the front of their lens....wanted to see if 1) this is a major distraction, and 2) I've noticed my images shot with 5D MKIII are not turning out super crisp, shot this with 1 strobe, ISO 320, f16, 1/160th. ISO 320 seems somewhat low to have so much noise/pixelation in this image, is this just because it's in low light? Also, would love some feedback on color, (probably the most frustrating part of the editing process....). Thank you

I am new to underwater cinematography, and have purchased a Sony a7s II and am getting familiar with it before an important trip to Raja Ampat in October. I have many questions, and wonder if there are others in the community that are shooting with this camera that I can learn from, and compare notes with. 1. Picture Profile? Any thoughts on the advisable "picture profile" for shooting? sLog 2, sLog 3, Cine4? 2. Grading and LUTS? If one shoots with a flat picture profile, how does one properly grade or color correct? I have been doing as much internet research as I can, and this remains a bit of a mystery. I want to start collecting great clips in the proper picture profile. 3. White balance issues? On my first trip with this camera, to Cozumel, I believe that I properly manually white balanced the camera, at a fairly deep depth, but nevertheless experienced a strong magenta cast. Is anyone else having white balance issues with this camera? Is the camera known to be poor in that area, or acceptable, or does it have known challenges that require a work around? It would be great to possess the state of the art knowledge in this area so I can improve my results. I have posted my first "tests" with the camera, and the results are quite primitive, but they can be reviewed in this Vimeo clip. Anyone that wants to see some raw 4K footage of the first tests, to help me diagnose what is happening, can send me their email address and I will give them access to some raw footage. I'm interested in views on colour correction / grading software. I've been doing my colour correction in Sony Vegas Pro, mostly using Color Curves, but I'm getting sick of dragging those fiddly little tangents around, and I hate the fact that there's no undo functionality. I'm upgrading to a new computer in the new year and it's time for a better tool. I'm a PC person, so it has to work in Windows. I'm a Vegas Pro user, but I'm probably going to invest in the full Adobe CS suite in the new year as well. Still likely to use Vegas as my main NLE though. I need it to work with my old HDV footage and newer AVCHD / DSLR footage. Here's what's in my mind: DaVinci Resolve Lite - free Adobe Speedgrade - $969 standalone but included in the CS6 Master Collection or Production Premium suite Magic Bullet Colorista II - $299 (might need other Magic Bullet products too?) Technicolor Cinestyle Color Assist - $99 - New kid on the block Any experiences? Views? How do they compare in terms of ease of use, features and performance? Also, since none of them appear to plug into Vegas, do they allow rough cutting of footage along with color-correction, with a view to exporting and EDL etc. to Vegas after colour correction?
