  1. Anyone got one or maybe 2 Ev manual controllers they'd like to sell at a nice price? Preferably 2nd hand unless it's an amazing price new! Bare in mind I'm in the UK when looking at postage & import tax! Thanks Heather
  2. Hello everyone. Has anyone else shot with the Canon 100mm 2.8 L lens with the Ikelite 8" dome port rather than the recommended flat port? I have been using for a couple of months now while shooting in the Maldives and think I am starting to hit some limitations. I am shooting on a 7d and mostly use an adapted Marvels Cine Style picture profile with increased sharpness. I feel the picture is resulting in softer edges and not behind able to focus as close with the dome port. Could anyone using the flat port give me some feedback on their focusing distances and how sharp they are finding this lens underwater? I have a few pictures and vide on the following links: www.flickr.com/pictures/basementvision www.vimeo.com/basementvision Cheers, Alex.

  6. Hi all I am looking for someone who can drill a couple of new holes in my Ikelite housing to convert it for shooting with a 7D (from a 40D). Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Preferably London-based. Cheers Aaron
  7. The following clip isn't that long but should give you an idea of what the lens, camera and dome combination are capable of. I will definitely be trying this again! It was worth cutting off the hood:: Background: Last year I purchased a used Ikelite DSLR housing and 8" modular dome port to house a Canon 5D2. For my first dive trip I used the Canon 17-40L with the #5510.24 port extension and the 8" modular dome. In the end it worked out okay but I didn't care for the edge sharpness - especially for video at the wide (17mm) focal length. I did try a +2 diopter and I think it helped a bit but I had a lot of problems focusing at/around infinity so I took it off after a day of diving. What I did like about the 17-40 is that is has a relatively close focus distance and so stills shot at 40mm were very sharp and worked well with a single strobe. But wide angle just wasn't working all that well. Here is a link to a gallery of photos (all underwater all taken with the 17-40L). Note: many of these photos are cropped, some quite significantly: http://www.amazonbeach.com/PhotoVideo/Cozumel2012/ I had seen some very nice footage shot with the Canon 14mm L version II. But that lens is way over my budget! So I searched around and found a Rokinon 14mm f2.8 lens used on Craigslist for $220. It was in decent shape. By f4 it is very sharp and for my copy by f5.6 it is crazy sharp and has no noticeable vignette on the full frame 5d2. It is a very fun lens to use. You can shoot straight into the sun with little or no flaring! The moustache shaped distortion is immediately obvious if there are any horizontal straight lines. Easy to fix for stills but need to be aware of for video. Of course, I really wanted to take it underwater and thought it might fit in the Ikelite system - nope! It was so close, but the built in hood of the lens is too wide to fit through the ikelite port extension tube. So I tried taking the lens apart a few times (to cleanly remove the hood) but never did figure it out. Along the way I declicked the aperture ring - which I thought I would like - but it had no damping and the throw is so short I put that tiny bearing back in. From earlier measurements, I knew that the lens would fit through with the lens hood removed. So, given the lens was cheap, I cut the hood off with a dremmel tool. I first removed the font element (easy), stuffed the lens with lint free cloth to keep the particles from entering the rest of the lens and then simply cut off the lens hood. After this the lens fits quite easily through all the ikelite port extension tubes. And I am able to use the Ikelite focusing gears! FYI - This is a manual focus lens so the focus gears working has been very handy. The first port extension tube I tried was the 5510.24. There was a lot of vignette from the modular dome. I'm believe this port extension would have worked focus-wise though. However, when I purchased the used Ikelite kit, it also had the slightly shorter #5510.22 and the very short #5510.11. So next I tried the #5510.22 on a local lake dive. The conditions were crappy but it seemed to work okay. I really struggled with focusing though as it was so dark. Although I did capture this image when were were exiting (this is through the dome but above water!) http://www.amazonbeach.com/PhotoVideo/AmazonBeachGallery/slides/20120819144951_5D2_IMG_4396.html Then two weeks ago I was down in Ambergis Caye for a week. Unfortunately we were blown out for the majority of the trip so I only got in three dives. On the first dive I tried the #5510.11 (very short port extension). I think it was just too close to the lens to focus properly. Only the very center of the image was properly focused. On the only other two dives I switched to the #5510.22 extension tube. On the first dive I struggled with focus. I was confused and thought I needed to stick a land based hyperfocal focus point - but that really didn't work. On the second dive I had more time and refocused with live view. This time the results were a lot better! When I disassembled the rig at the end of the day I noted that the focus was very close to the minimum focus distance. Perhaps with a dome port and in water, the focus is on the virtual image right behind the dome? For all the dives I used Magic Lantern. It has such an easy whitebalance menu system (just two button clicks). But in the end I wasn't overly pleased with the results. Because 14mm is so crazy wide on a full frame I had to hold the white card so close that often it had shadow on the card. But I'm also wondering if the Magic Lantern whitebalance doesn't use a very full range of tint? I should also note that this lens is manual aperture. So I just set the aperture at the click stop between f8 and f12 - I'll call it f10. The shutter was set at 1/47 and I ended up using iso 100, 160 and 320 for the dives. I probably should have set the aperture at f12. You will see that the water was pretty hazy and a bit dark but it worked. Also, I had the cinemascope crop marks turned on for all the dives as my goal was to create a 2.35:1 video when finished. So the sample clip is cropped this way. Observations: 1.) When shooting stills, there is a very noticeable vignette from the dome port. If you plan on shooting lots of stills you will need to crop to get rid of vignette. But I like wide angles with very landscape aspect ratios so no problem here. And at 20MP, you can crop forever on the 5D2. 2.) When shooting video, the full video frame (16:9) has small - but just noticeable - corner vignetting. The average viewer may not notice it but anyone critical will call it out. So, cropping to a more anamorphic aspect ratio is probably best. But once again, this lens is crazy wide which lends itself to that type of presentation. 3.) Corner sharpness. I think it is quite good! The 17-40 was much softer. And I think with more dive time to get focus better I think the Rokinon / Samyang 14mm f2.8 will rival or even best the Canon 14mm L version II. Perhaps if placed behind a glass dome (vs the Ikelite acrylic) it might be even sharper?
  8. For sale is the 5508.05 port for the Nikon 105D Macro. This will not work with the VR (already tried:(). The front of the port has a some light scratches, but not anything that I would expect to show up in photos. If you receive the port and think that they are really unacceptable you can return it. But I would be very surprised. I am asking $120 shipped anywhere in the cont. US. Includes neoprene covers for both front and rear of port. Front cover has 'DCS' initials on it Thanks

  10. Since Ikelite doesn't sell stainless steel control pins for MENU and SETUP controls on the above housing I'm looking into getting some through Wetpixel. If you have a handfull of those pins in mint (uncorroded) condition I'm willing to purchase them from you. Price negociatable. email me at bluewaterimages(at)gmail(dot)com. Thanks
  11. This is the time that the beautiful nudibranches spawn here on the west coast of Norway. So me and my buddy went for some nudibranch hunting! Since the waters are so cold during the winter ( 34F) our only option is a heavy duty drysuit. We managed one hour bottomtime, but then it was time to head for the surface to a hot cup of coffee! I use an canon 350d in an ikelite housing. 160ds strobes and a l&m sola 800 focus light.
  12. Ikelite AF-35 Strobe - a perfect first strobe! I am selling my Ikelite AF-35 strobe. This strobe is in like new condition. It was used for about one year, then sat unused in my closet for a few months after I purchased a new set up. I am finally getting around to posting this as I do some pre-spring cleaning! I tested the strobe out this evening and it works perfectly. The Ikelite AF-35 is a fantastic strobe with any compact camera set up. It uses an optical sensor to read the flash from the housing for firing without any need of fiber optic cable. Auto and Manual adjustments, it's the perfect way to get started improving your UW photo setup! I loved and used this strobe out in California where it worked great. New this costs $420 My Strobe: $300 (includes UPS ground shipping in continental USA and paypal fees. I will ship other places for an additional cost). Includes all parts, Strobe with tray, diffuser, shims for various brand housings, screws and manual. (everything but the box!) In like new condition, very well cared for - you'd almost believe it was never in the water! Never flooded, battery compartment is in pristine condition, o-ring is still in good condition. Included diffuser to create a softer even beam of light, or use without. Strobe face is clean and unscratched.

  21. Hello people, This is my second thread on this forum in six month. The first was to ask for help for my choice of underwater housing for my canon 5DmkII. You helped me to chose the Ikelite model. I use it in artificial waters (swimming pools) for portraits. My avatar is an ilustration of it made by my girflriend with a nikon coolpix AW100. my gallery can ben found here : https://plus.google.com/photos/107511759174870952997/albums/5703530631076161553 I work "well" with sun and natural lights in my pools, and that's really fun, but I would like to go up and control my own lights. I have two choices : continuous lights and triggered lights. About continuous lights, I have spots underwater (minimum control, white balance not easy) and spots out of water. That's the easy way. About triggered lights : I have nothing. Not underwater, not out of water. That's the hard way. My question : What can I use for triggering the slaves flashes ? I see two ways : 1 : remote triggering by wireless or cable signal. 2 : slave/master triggering with a main flash accorded to the ikelite housing. Point 2 is quite "easy" I suppose : All I have to buy is ikelite flashes with arms and use them as trigger. But I would like to consider point 1. The question, more specialy, is : is there a remote device or a cable device or something that I can adapt to the ikelite and has someone made it before me and could help me with those tricks ? I thank you in advance for your help and hope it is the right forum. I hesitate to post in the technical forum but I thought it was quite a newbie question...

  24. When I go on dive trips, I tend to buy some gear, then sell it afterwards since I don't live anywhere that I can regularly dive / shoot. This works out better than renting, especially if I can find used gear to buy. I have sold here (full 7d Ikelite setup) as well as on ScubaBoard and POTN -- all under Iristyle. In December I took a quick trip to the Caribbean and housed my Lumix DMC-ZS7 pocket cam since I needed something really small and was OK with something a little less serious. I recently returned from a longer trip where I housed an Olympus E-PL3 for a few weeks, so was OK with something a bit bigger but with more functionality. At one point, I used my 7d, with DS-160 strobes. Since I know that I intend to resell afterwards, I try to take great care of the gear -- I'm particular about long rinses in freshwater after every salt exposure, etc. Some of the kit, I'm going to hold on to for next time, but some of the bigger ticket items I must part with for now. I'm getting everything listed now, and will provide pics later. All gear includes original materials, manuals, and is in excellent shape unless otherwise noted. Prices are for PP cash, add 3% if using PP credit. Shipping is included - my choice of USPS priority, USPS first class or FedEx. From Olympus setup - parts purchased in May from Bluewater Photo - used 2 weeks * 10Bar E-PL3-Z housing for Olympus E-PL3 with dome port for 14-42 lens - paid $940 - ask $890 http://www.bluewater...s-e-pl3-housing - Scott has a good video review there Somehow I managed to put a tiny surface scuff, about 3mm in length in the dome port -- probably from trying to get close to a nudibranch -- does not affect IQ. There are a couple of minor rubs on the outside of the dome, that again, do not affect performance. * 10Bar 67mm Adapter for Semi-dome - paid $48, ask $40 Clips onto the front of the dome and allows a 67mm wet lens to be snapped on or off * Bluewater Fiber cable from 10bar housing to Sea&Sea strobe - paid $50, ask $40 Does what it says ;0 From Lumix setup - parts purchased around Dec from Reef Photo, Amazon - used for 1 week * Panasonic DMW-MCTZ10 housing for Lumix TZ8, TZ10 (ZS7) - paid $230 + $95 for adapter - ask $280 Will sell only with the Deeproof M67 MCTZ10 adapter for 67mm wet lenses http://www.divervisi...e9h4aok6i6om0o0 The housing was used (but looked brand new) from Amazon, the adapter was new * Ulcs universal tray with two padded handles paid $90 used, ask $70 Was used when purchased. The tray has a taller handle, and a half-height handle -- worked well for me on both housings * Inon Cap W35 - paid $30, ask $20 This is what you need to get a regular fiber cable to attach to the DMW-MCTZ10 housing - includes the special plastic cap piece that screw locks into the housing, reflector stickers, stickers for dimming the camera strobe, etc Some older items that I didn't sell last time -- and forgot to relist! * Ikelite 100/240V smart charger with international plugs - paid $100, ask $85 http://www.adorama.c...2point0Product1 * Ikelite 4066.5 NiMh spare battery for DS-160, DS-125 - MSRP $165, ask $110 I got it used, but never had a problem * Ikelite 9571.3 - 1" ball for Ikelite release handle extender - paid $25, ask $20 http://www.bhphotovi...Extender_1.html When I sold the 7d setup, I sold off one of these, but not the other -- whoops. I have a couple of Sea&Sea strobes - YS-01 and YS-D1. I could be convinced to sell the YS-01, but only if it's going to go with one of the larger items. * Sea & Sea YS-01 strobe - bought back for Dec trip, ask $400 If I sold this, I would include the ULCS ballhead adapter for Sea&Sea (paid about $25) Pictures to come...
  25. I have 2) DS161 strobes that I am selling as I will be doing more traveling and will be getting a smaller set of strobes. These are awesome strobes with the color and recycle times. The 500 lumen video lights are nice if your camera system shoots video. Price is firm at $850.00/ea, PayPal and shipping charges are included in cost. They sell for around $1200.00/ea online. Only been used maybe 15 times underwater. I only have 1 charger for both strobes. I would be willing to sell them both together for $1600/set but this price is firm as well. No arms are included. The do have ball mounts though so you would only need to acquire the arms. If I can find the arms I have, I will include them at no additional charge. Also please note, please advise if you need the single TTL cable or the dual. I have both, but will only send the one you need if you don't have another Ikelite strobe then you will have to use the single cable. Adding an additional strobe, I will include the dual cable with the single cable. Diffusers are included with each strobe. Photos to follow in the next few days. Mike
