  1. Just having returned from a couple of excellent weeks diving in Bonaire, I wanted to share a couple of thoughts: First - Big Thanks. I had a couple of "issues" with my camera gear during the trip. Post to Wetpixel and PMs were answered really quickly and helpfully by a raft of people. While not wanting to embarrass anyone - or miss anyone too - thanks especially to Chris, Tom, Pavel and Oskar at Retra for advice on a range of diverse issues. You guys are brilliant and kept me relatively calm and relatively sane. Excellent advice, quick replies, thoughtful ideas..... I have written this before, but I really do think think Wetpixel is an excellent community. Folks are so good to share their advice, experience and knowledge freely and helpfully. And, even better, WP seems to suffer with almost none of the utter cr*p and abuse that seems to ruin so many other forums (check out the BBC football (soccer) Have Your Say site!). Moving on (and again, apologies if I have't thanked anyone who chipped in)..... Like many on the forum I've gone from DX cameras (Nikon D100, D200, D300) to FX (D800) and have now done about 100 dives back on DX with a D500. Some conclusions which I thought worth passing on: FX vs DX - DX setups are slightly cheaper: a DX body costs less than an FX. - DOF is better on DX which is especially helpful on macro. - Though I was concerned that moving back to DX I would miss much of the image quality that I had on the D800, this has proved not to be the case. D500 DX is excellent. I must admit I don't make mega-prints and a lot of my output I (try) sell via agencies. No problems getting images accepted following the switch. I can't speak of course for the D850. - DX is easier on the WA port issue. I really liked the Sigma 15mm and the Nikkor 16-35 for the D800. The Sigma was easy to "port" but the 16-35 was, in my view, a bit of a devil requiring a 230mm huge dome port. (I've never tried though the Sea and Sea converter). That port was expensive and, for me, hard for travelling on European baggage allowances. By contrast the DX only needs either a 100 dome port or the DP-FE size. - The Nikkor 8-15mm works really well on DX between 15 and approx 11. Image quality is great. It works equally well with the DP100 or DP-FE - I'm still playing around with a 1.4 TC and, as I have reported elsewhere, I've found that the classic Kenko 1.4 DG Telepro300 won't work with my D500 and the 8-15. It does work with my Z6 but not on a D5. Go figure. As you might have read elsewhere and as others have confirmed, the Kenko 1.4 TC DGX will work. I'll get hold of one soon and try it. Bonaire - If you are thinking of diving Bonaire: I've been going since the early 2000s and found the reef this time around in the best health I have seen for some years. Definite signs of coral growth; work by the local agency, SINAPA, at coral growing; new anemones around with Spotted Cleaner Shrimps on them (not seen them for years) and, generally, reefs with clouds of brown chromis and the usual suspects going about their lives. - Snooting: if you fancy a stab at shooting, Bonaire is great place to try it out with lots of macro life. I say "stab" meaning I would encourage folks not to stab themselves in frustration over snooting. UW photog is tough enough dealing with moving critters, moving camera, moving photographer, moving currents, viz, blah blah. Snooting adds a whole new area of pain. But when you get it right... Sweeeeet.... a couple of pics attached. - We did all shore diving with tanks from Dive Friends. Friendly, very convenient with filling stations all over the west side of Bonaire. I can recommend them. We didn't do any boat dives. We never used DMs or guides. Navigation on Bonaire is easy - and the critters are not hard to find. Pedersen cleaner shrimps, Spotted Cleaner Shrimps, Yellowline Arrowcrabs, Gobies, the occasional whip coral shrimp, drums, jawfish..... Well just some thoughts

  10. I am selling my SLP Waterhousing for surf photography. I purchased this surf housing brand new from SPL Warehousing in San Diego for $1699.00 USD. I used this several time taking images for friend and family surfing in Southern California. This SPL Waterhousing is designed for the Nikon D7000 camera body. When I purchased the surf housing new, I bought it with the Flat Port. I didn’t have a fisheye lens at the time so to be compatible with the Nikon Nikkor 18-70mm Kit lens. It worked great with that lens I just had a slight bit of vignetting at 18mm. I could also zoom out to 70mm. The 70mm was handy on big wave days if you just did not want to get too close to the close up action in the impact zone. I am selling my SPL Surfhousing, because I have recently change camera brands and the new Sony brand is not compatible with this housing. This housing has never been flooded, nor have the seal been compromised in any way. All the glass is scratch free and in pristine condition. I still have the Nikon D7000 camera body if you are interested in purchasing as a package. Item that are included. A-Series SPL Watrehousing (Welded Aluminum) Flat Port (wide angle) Neoprene Port Cover Detachable Pistol Grip with Trigger Detachable Side Grip 3/8 nuts Plastic Wingnuts GoPro Mount Silicone Grease SPL Waterhousing Nikon D7000 A-SERIES camera waterhousings are not dive housings, they are splash rated for water action sports only. Although not made for underwater diving photography, they are great water housings for photographing surfing, sailing, kite boarding, bodyboarding, fishing or many other shallow water activities. Construction: Housings are constructed of ultra light weight aluminum. Sheared, formed on a sheet metal press brake then welded solid by a certified welder. All aluminum is hard anodized to protect against salt water corrosion. The water housing is then painted with industrial powder coat paint. Features and Controls: ▪ Aperture ▪ Shutter speed ▪ Manual shutter release ▪ Back focus (by request) ▪ Detachable flash option ▪ Interchangeable Ports ▪ Other controls can be added for an extra cost Depth Rating: ▪ 15-20ft ▪ All housings made by SPL can handle any size surf you have the nuts to swim into. ▪ These are not dive housings and they should not be treated as such. Weight and Dimensions: Weight 3 lbs with fisheye port and pistol grip

  16. I have upgraded to a D800 system and am offering my D700 system for sale. Included is the camera body only and housing only both in perfect working order. You will need lens(es) of your choice and the appropriate ports, domes and extensions. I would be happy to discuss my full setup, suggest possibilities for you and point you to readily accessible sources for purchase of these additional items. Nikon D700 Camera is in excellent condition. I purchased it new in 2009 and have well maintained it ever since. I have used the plastic LCD screen protector at all times, so the screen is clear and unmarred. Included in the sale is everything that originally came with the camera, including body cap, monitor cover, battery, battery charger, strap, manual, etc., all in the original retail box. Current retail price new is $2,300. Aquatica AD700 This housing, made specifically for the D700, is in very good condition. It is equipped with the dual Nikonos bulkhead. The housing has a few isolated, small cosmetic dings but is otherwise in perfect working condition. I purchased it new in 2009. I have faithfully rinsed and lubed it after every dive. I’m guessing it’s been on a little over 200 dives and has never malfunctioned. I had routine service performed by a factory authorized repair center at the beginning of the year. Included are the housing, spare O-ring for the back, Aquatica instruction manual, all in the original retail box. Current retail price new is $3,100. I will sell both together for $3,500. Shipping and insurance is buyer’s responsibility. I will gladly answer all questions and email larger or other photos. For samples of what this combo can do, click here.

  23. Hi, I have been using my Subtronic PRO160 strobes (optic fiber) and Sea&Sea YS-D1 with a Nikon D800 successfully up to shutter speeds of 1/320 (always with optic fiber using a manual led trigger that I installed in a Nauticam Housing, with camera flash sync speed set to 1/320 auto-fp). I've upgraded my camera to a Nikon D850 in a Nauticam housing with Nauticam's manual led trigger installed as default. Yesterday I've tried my Subtronic's PRO160 UW for the first and they only were able to successfully light each photo if I used shutter speeds below 1/60 (the camera configured slower speed to use with flash in A & P modes). I was shooting in manual mode as ever, flash sync speed set to 1/250*(auto fp) (also tried setting it to 1/250 but no luck). When I used shutter speeds above 1/60 the bottom of the photos became unevenly illuminated or even black (depending on aperture, ISO and strobe power). Strobes are configured to fire with only one pulse from the trigger (as I always use). Later, at home, I've tested the strobes again and oddly they function normally until 1/200 (but at 1/250 they show the black bar at the bottom of the picture). I also tried my Sea&Sea YS-D1 and they also work normally just until 1/200 (they could have had low batteries so I will repeat the tests, but the Subtronics had full battery in the beginning of the dive). Anyone has any idea why this strange behavior? Why did they only work until 1/60 underwater? What changes to make them able to work at 1/200 at the surface? Why do they not work at the surface at 1/250 at least? I've tried everything I could remember (Camera in Single shot mode, M mode, EFCS off or on, no shutter delay activated, several combinations of aperture and ISO...). The only thing that I've changed besides the new camera, housing and new led trigger is the fiber optic cables: i used to use a 3mm optic fiber cable custom made by me (which I didn´t like because they were always failing) and now I use Nauticam standard cables (they didn't work at all with my other led trigger and the Subtronics, although they always worked with the Sea&Sea and also some INON's Z240 that I don't have anymore - all the way up to 1/320 with the D800). Any help would be appreciated: you never know when you will be busy fiddling with your camera UW and that great white will finally appear and gracefully swim by your side,, :-) Thanks, Miguel
