  1. Hello all, While I'm an experienced terrestrial nature photographer, I am a complete novice with underwater so I could use some advice and the reasoning behind it. Let me explain what I'm looking to do and the gear I have. First of all, I'm photographing to print and print large. I print on canvas and metal a lot of times 5' or larger. With my terrestrial work, detail and sharpness has been one of the hallmarks of my work so it is imperative that I keep that as much as possible underwater. I will be on a liveaboard trip mostly snorkeling for dolphins with a few dives added in the Bahamas in the next month and that is my primary concern right now. After that I have short-term plans for sea turtles, alligators, and freshwater animals. Eventually I'm sure I will move into macro, but for right now most of the work will be wide angle and with a good amount of over-under in the near future. Budget is an issue as I just bought a camera and housing for underwater, will need a port/lens, and at the same time I am opening a gallery with my artwork. On the other hand I need to capture images of the best quality to print large or else it doesn't do me any good to save money. So my approach is to start with minimal gear needed to solve some of the initial situations and the increase the possibilities with additional gear in the future when budget becomes available. I'm in the process of purchasing a used D800 with a Subal housing. Keeping in mind the snorkeling with the dolphins, I'm thinking of starting with just a wide angle. I'm considering both the Tokina 10-17mm and the Nikon 8-15mm. I know the Tokina will only work from about 15-17mm without vignetting, but on the other hand the Nikon is really only either a 15mm or an 8mm and while the circular fisheye images look cool viewed on a screen I'm not sure if they make an art print (please tell me otherwise for anyone who has printed these type of images large). Also I have a D500 that the 10-17mm could work well with if a second housing was in my future but realistically that's won't happen for several years. The image quality might be leaning me towards the Nikon even with 2x the price tag. Any recommendations between these two in my situation? Also, is this the right focal length I should be using with the dolphins or is another range better suited? Without fully explaining my situation, ReefPhoto recommended a Zen DP-170 port. The $1000 price tag is much nicer than the $1500 Subal DP-FE4, but 170mm is only 6.7" inches vs the 8" of the Subal port or the 9" of a Zen 230mm. From reading Alex Mustard's Underwater Photography Masterclass I was under the impression that for wide angle shots a larger port is preferred for edge to edge sharpness and also for over-under work. Last questions are regarding lighting. I was considering trying to photograph with just ambient light since the depths will be shallow and I was thinking a bright sandy bottom would also reflect up a good amount of fill. Secondly, no strobes would give less drag for moving with fast-moving dolphins. Also, I know nothing about underwater strobes except from reading Alex Mustard's book and initial price checks look like it would add $1500+. Is my image quality going to be lacking without strobes either in terms of color cast or unattractive shadows? If I really should go for a strobe setup, would a single strobe be ok or are 2 necessary in this case for best results? I know I will be getting strobes eventually but if it won't make much of a difference in this situation I'd be happy to delay the purchase until I know more of what I'm doing. Thank you and sorry for the long post, Robert

A long list of pioneering engineering breakthroughs from previous Nauticam designs are now standard in NA-D800. The patented housing Locking Latch System has received acclaim worldwide for its ease and functionality. These recessed latches are equipped with safety locks, reduce bulk and require minimal physical effort to engage and release. Port changes have never been simpler than utilizing the Patented Nauticam Locking Port Release. No wrestling, no twisting, no misalignment – just seat and lock. Lens changes are also easily accomplished without removing the camera from the housing using the lens release button logically accessed on the housing front. The lightweight, rugged Nauticam handles are generously contoured with a durable over-mold process of comfortable non-slip rubber. The vacuum monitoring and leak detection circuit provides peace of mind by enabling the user to ensure that their housing is water tight before entering the water. The NA-800 is a shining example of the best that Nauticam has to offer. Every control placement is well thought out. Every button, lever and switch considered not in terms of what is easier for the designer, but what is right for the shooter. An excellent example is the patent pending Multi Controller Pad that is located within easy reach of the right thumb. The device virtually recreates the Nikon multi selector on the back of the NA-800 housing allowing full multidirectional use of this powerful tool (including diagonal movement). No other manufacturer has this. Camera loading is "drop in" simple, with no controls requiring pre-alignment, allowing the fastest and easiest setup possible. Core camera controls such as shutter release, aperture, shutter speed, live view, info, exposure compensation, depth of field preview, Fn, flash exposure compensation, focus mode, AF/M and zoom are located at the user's fingertips. Dual thumb levers, located on the right and left sides of NA-D800 pull important camera functionality from the back of the housing out to the handles. This allows quick access to Video Record, AF-ON (for thumb activated focus), ISO and Image Playback. Complete control of the camera is available from the ergonomic rubberized handles. INTEGRATED VACUUM CHECK AND LEAK DETECTION SYSTEM The Nauticam vacuum check and leak detection system is shipped with NA-1DXII as standard equipment. Combined with an accessory vacuum valve (PN 25625), this monitoring system provides constant updates on the water tight and safe-to-dive status of the housing. A simple color coded LED lighting system lets the user know that the vacuum is solid, or that the housing is losing vacuum. Leak detection is built into the same circuit, so if there is water intrusion, an audible and visual indication will occur. The Nauticam system is temperature compensated, eliminating false alarms caused by a change in outside temperature, or from a camera heating up on an action packed dive.
  5. I am selling my D800 body with the Subal housing body. Camera pix below. The housing is presently at Reef Photo getting its final maintenance check and reinstalling the standard viewfinder. I'll post photos of the housing as soon as it is returned. Caveat(s): Subal issued a retrofit for the back of the housing a couple of years ago because the buttons were sticking. There is no problem since the retrofit, but you do have to work the buttons some after a day's diving. I do that anyway with every housing, just makes sense. The camera has never been flooded, but the housing has been, quite a while ago ( worn port o-ring). Luckily, the flood was an hour away from Reef Photo, so it had a full checkup and moisture alarm replacement within the afternoon. ( The camera was toast, I am selling the replacement Nikon D800.) I've been using the setup ever since with no issues. I've included a photo from my last trip with it, three weeks ago. It is a 36 megapixel camera, full frame, with everything it came with, box, manuals, DVD, camera strap, battery charger, two batteries. The housing is set up for fiber optic cables (two), and standard viewfinder. Selling them both together for $2300.

About the conditions: I bought Camera Body + Housing 18 months ago, from a photo professional, in perfect status and I kept them in that way. When I bought the D7000, its shutter count was just above 16k (pretty new), now it's at almost 24k (as you can see in the screenshot on gumtree). And that means I haven't used much my camera, because I used the company's set every day. In the package are 4 different lenses. All of them usable for dry photos, 2 of them for underwater (Tokina fisheye and Nikoor Macro). The Tokina, Tamron, Nikkor 35 were bought brand new from shops. The 60 mm was a second hand but still in great conditions. Strobe bought second hand too and still in great conditions. Dome Port in excellent conditions too (can provide close up shots). Concluding: DSLR with zoom lens, wide angle, 35mm and macro for Street, travels, nature photography. 2 different sets for Underwater: 1)wide angle with 8.5" dome port 2)Macro 60mm with its port On top of everything, don't forget the Vacuum system, that makes you dive in peace, and trust me it's a big thing! Please do not hesitate to contact me for further info, more close up pictures or more. Local pick-up preferred. 20. A couple of weeks ago a Wetpixel reader emailed me directly and asked for my experience of moving from a Nikon D800 to the D500 specifically in a Subal housing. The reader thought the answer would be of wider interest to WP readers - so here it is. As I say, this is based on my own personal experience. I'm no pixel peeper or techno ninja - I just really like taking pictures underwater - so some might argue with techie detail or my choice of gear. Fair enough! "I’ve always been a keen macro shooter. Since about 2008, I've moved from a Nikon D300/Subal to the Nikon D800/Subal - and now the D500/Subal. I’ve also moved from electrically initiated strobes fired from the D300/Subal to fibre optic in the D800/Subal. I found the switch to fibre a really good experience. Fibre is so much more flexible and rugged and is easier for using TTL - which I like especially for macro. I make the point on strobes connections as I think it’s an important part of the D800/D500 consideration. FORMAT Both the D500 and the D800 are superb! I found with the D300/D500 and a DX sensor that using the Nikkors 60mm and 105mm worked well for macro. But with the D800 you only need the 105mm. With the FX sensor on the D800 the 60mm is too short. So with the D800 I only traveled with one macro lens and one port, the Nikkor 105mm and the Subal FP-105VR. I have got so used to the 105mm that, so far, with the D500 I’m only using the 105mm and have not gone back to using a 60mm. The D800 gives you LOADs of pixels which makes cropping easy and flexible - ideal for macro; and you can also switch to a DX image (with the Subal you can do this easily underwater) on the D800 which, then, effectively gives you a roughly 160mm macro lens - with no real loss of quality. So highly flexible. HANDLING Handling of the D500 or D800 is, in my view, broadly the same. The D800 Subal housing is slightly bigger (it’s slightly taller - for good reason which I’ll explain) but not hugely so. The controls between the two Subal housings are pretty much the same - the usual Subal high-build quality and superb “feel”. STROBES AND TTL Here’s the big difference: the D800 can fire strobes using fibre or electrical cables (although mine is only set up for fibre) initiated, in the case of fibre, by the camera’s pop-up built-in flash (hence the slightly larger housing). Electric connections use, of course, a hot shoe link to electrical bulkheads. However the D500 cannot initiate firing strobes on its own via fibre optics. There is no built-in camera flash on the D500. You therefore have to buy a strobe initiator - whether the Subal V3 system or a Turtle TTL or something like that. The electronics fits inside the housing and connects to the camera hot shoe and then to LEDs fitted inside the housing attached to the fibre optic bulkheads. When the camera fires, the strobe initiator flashes an LED which then activates the strobes. These initiators, in most cases, will also give you TTL - which comes automatically with the D800’s in-built flash. I bought the V3 system from Subal which is pricey but seems good - although I have had some initial problems with the LEDs failing - which Subal have replaced. WIDE-ANGLE The other thing I really liked about the D800 was WA shooting. I find the images amazing: sharp, beautiful colours - especially the blues. I have sold a lot of images from this especially from trips to the Red Sea. I’ve not yet had chance to test out the D500 in the same way but I really hope I don’t lose that D800 WA capability! SUMMING UP So, on balance, nothing really to chose from between the D500 and D800 by my experience so far in terms of image quality or handling. The only thing I would flag up is the additional cost of the D500 strobe initiator - which, as I have hopefully explained, you don’t have with the D500 and which you do get with the D800. I’ve had my D500 system about 3 months and have done one trip with it and shot about 3000 images. I’m really pleased with it. Was it really worth switching from the D800 with all the costs involved? Honestly, I’m not sure. The D800/Subal is superb. If I had realised fully the implications of the D500 not having a built-in flash to initiate the strobes via fibre optics (which I love!) - and the costs involved of doing this - I’m not entirely sure I would have made the switch. "

  25. Spent a week on the Nai'a and another 8 days at Qamea Resort near Taveuni. Shot the Nikon D850 in a Nauticam housing. I used the Sigma 15mm FE, Nikon 17-35 behind a Zen 170mm dome, as well as the Nikon 105mm VR macro. I'm still working on a TR, will post when it's available. But here's a few shots to whet your appetite. Underwater Album on Flickr
