  3. Thinking about getting one of those "new" diffusors that are better suited for CFWA. As I use Ikelite DS161, I have found two alternatives: Ikelite's http://www.ikelite.com/accessories/4069.2-dome-diffuser.html Glowdive's (they have versions for most strobe models) http://www.glowdive.com/lightdome/en/index.htm Anyone who has tested any? Anyone who can see benefits/drawbacks between these two or perhaps wants to recommend yet another one? Thanks!

  10. I was wondering, does anyone use strobes with different power in pairs? (coverage, CT the same) I am about to buy a venerable Subtronic Nova - which is the third most powerful light known to me underwater (2nd being its successor pro270, first Baker) which I might pair with a Subtronic Maxi. GN's underwater: 20+16, other characteristics match. If I am right with the formula, I should expect GN 25.6 total (2 novas would result 28), worse case the "maxi side" of the objects ~2-3 stops shadows - which is unlikely to prevail, because where shadows are visible (macro+other close-by stuff) both strobes would operate at very low power settings.
  11. I wish I could hold onto this camera since it is in WONDERFUL condition but I am not using it and it is only taking up space in my little apartment. Hope to sell it to someone who will take advantage of this great camera set up! AND I will include the manuals for the camera, housing, and strobes. I could make more money selling pieces individually but I will sell the ENTIRE bundle for $2,000 + shipping.
  12. I would like to upgrade my 2xS2000 strobes to something stronger, and browsing the datasheets, I started wondering about color temerature. On land, we'd need 5500K. 1m optical path (0.5m distance) takes away ~1/2 stop red, which speaks for a ~2000K correction. I know, 14bit raw has a great tolerance, still, isn't the case favoring the warmer (4700K) strobes, compared to the typical 5500-5800K ones from Inon and Sea&Sea? In other words: may we expect better red noise using warmer strobes, especially for WA work/larger object distance?

  16. Heya. I have inherited a venerable YS01 strobe which has just two power options - ON or TTL. It is being triggered by a simple fibre-optic cable attached by Velcro sticky pads to the Ikelite Compact housing and in front of the strobe trigger sensor. I'm getting decent enough results with ON (i.e. manual, full power) and playing with distance, strobe positioning, ISO, E/V, f/number and shutter speed, but don't notice any difference when I put the strobe in TTL. My understanding from the strobe manual is that in TTL the strobe assesses the scene and adjusts the flash light output accordingly, and if it cannot decide, it just punts out of full power. Question is, if it does decide to vary the power from full, what aperture and shutter speed settings is it assuming the camera is using? There is a guide number chart in the manual - is that what I need to refer to in order to set the camera up? Clearly the strobe is not getting this information down the fibre-optic cable.....all that is doing is telling it to fire. It's a question I get asked often by diving guests where I work, so it would be good to know what TTL does in this set-up. I assume also that using a bulkhead connector between the camera's hotshoe and the strobe allows exposure information to be shared with the strobe? (my camera does not have a hotshoe, but I'd like to know anyway for future purchases). Thanks

  18. Hi I'm looking for a UFL-2 strobe. Please get in touch if you are able to help me out. Thanks Catherine
  19. Moving to Denver, so I'm selling my beloved U/W Sea & Sea and Nikon DSLR setup. This includes everything you'll ever need, minus the camera lenses and some AA batteries. Strobes, arms, ports, the camera, pelican case, even spare o-rings and grease are included. I added a GoPro mount so I can record video and shoot stills simultaneously. The mount keeps the video stable and works incredibly well. The entire system is very easy to handle underwater. All Sea & Sea products were made in Japan. Nikon D-80 10.2MP DSLR battery charger Sea & Sea DX-D80 aluminum and polycarbonate camera housing (rated to 200 ft) Sea & Sea fisheye dome port 240 (Product No.30116) neoprene dome cover Sea & Sea NX standard flat port (Product No.56101) rubber port cover Sea & Sea focus lamp 2 Sea & Sea YS-120 TTL Duo strobes 1 pair of Sea & Sea Sea Arm IV polycarbonate strobe arms 1 dual lead 5 pin Nikonos sync cord Set of strobe diffusers 4 closed cell foam arm ballasts (never used, it's pretty close to neutral buoyancy) both strobes and focus light take aa batteries 1 GoPro mount (Gopro not included) Over a dozen new o-rings (every size is covered), lubricant, and tool included Original manuals for just about everything Pelican 1650 case w/ eggcrate foam I've never had any problems with this equipment and have always handled it and stored it with care. I've never seen a drop of water inside the housing, nor has the alarm signaled. Speaking of which, the only problem with the housing is a piece of plastic holding the button battery in place broke off and is held in place with wire. I test the alarm frequently and it works just fine. 100% functional. I've used both the Tokina 10-17mm AT-X 107 fisheye and the Nikon 60mm macro lenses with this setup. Other lenses may work, see Sea & Sea's website for compatabilities. Email me for photos at jproc77@yahoo.com Thanks!

  22. Hi folks, I am seeing more and more situations where i would like to shoot bursts underwater, such as approaching schooling fishes, rapid swimming hunters, or macro. So, i am looking for advice on which setup attributes to look for in order to make it possible, i have in mind a few areas of attention: Strobe exposure control: TTL or manual I know most of you probably go manual, but having tried both, i must admit i still prefer TTL, which gets the exposure quite right in most of my experience. And when shooting actions, i doubt even further my ability to get manual exposure right. I am just wondering if the extra flashes needed for the TTL may limit the ability to shoot multiple real flashes, or limit the burst frequency. The answer might depend on the next point though. Strobe connectivity: electric or optical fibers Like many, i moved to optical fibers (got corroded electric cables twice...). It's great in terms of reliability, though it introduces a dependency on the camera's internal flash capabilities. In manual mode, you workaround it by setting the internal flash to 1/64th of it's power or something like that. When doing so, are we confident the internal flash won't be the limiting factor? So bottom line questions: are optical fibers a no-go for burst shooting? Or OK... in manual only? Which strobes? Some strobes might be more capable than others in terms of burst shooting. Right now i use two Inon Z240 type IV, would there be suitable? Would others be better? I must say i am puzzled by the userguide's recommendation to limit the number of shots, wait for the strobe to cool down, etc... Camera continuous-autofocus capabilities (underwater) Though burst mode could be used for still subjects to capture a given attitude, i foresee it mostly for fast moving subjects. Hence, there's a need for good continuous focus capability on the camera side. I am currently using an Olympus Micro 4/3 and i don't think these cameras are (yet?) fit for continuous autofocus. Before i used Nikon, and would not be against going back to this brand. So question is which of their D-SLRs would do the trick - not sure the D7000 is sufficient? Or maybe it is? Something to add: i would really prefer to avoid full frames cameras, i could cope with the budget of an APS-C D-SLR, especially if i can buy it used, but full frame would be too expensive and bulky for travel (already have to carry 2 rebreathers, for wifey and myself...). Any other criteria to consider for that setup? thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts :-) cheers Nicolas
  23. Hi! I'm a newbie UW photographer about to go on a liveaboard to Cocos Island, a trip of a lifetime with sharks, sharks, sharks. I'm renting a GoPro and now at the last minute they tell me it doesn't come with an extra video light. They say it has white balancing which will be fine. Is this true? Most of the dives will be near 100' and I don't want subpar photos. I don't want to invest in my own camera yet, but I also don't want to miss out on good photos. If the GoPro without video light isn't good enough, I'm looking at a SeaLife with video light (which isn't cheap! I'd rather rent at this point). Thank you so much in advance for your advice! UPDATE: looks like I've found a new GoPro with video light setup from another place to rent, so I'm all good!
  24. Up for sale is 2 Inon Z-240 strobes in excellent condition. They do not have a lot of dives on them, no scratches, dings, never flooded. Comes with original boxes and paperwork. I would like to sell them as a pair. The only reason I'm selling them is because I'm doing more video and they aren't being used. They work perfectly. $600 Each. Buyer pays all shipping and Paypal fees. Accept Paypal only. Features: High power with Guide Number 24, wide 100 degrees circular beam angle light distribution even without a diffuserINON unique T-shape Twin Flash construction and optimally designed reflecting mirror/prism enable effective light distribution and produce powerful guide number 24 (*1) at wide circular 100° beam coverage without a diffuser from compact body (outer diameter:99mm x depth: 100mm x height: 122mm) (*2) run by only 4 x AA batteries. Even for shooting wide subject, the Z-240 delivers strong strobe light to an entire area without using a diffuser which suppresses strobe power. Packaged -0.5 White Diffuser 2 (TTL/Manual) increases bean angle to 110 degree (guide number 21). With the white diffuser, color temperature of the Z-240 decreases at 100K (Kelvin) only to depict underwater scenery in same color regardless of using the diffuser or not.(*1) Measurement in air/ ISO100m, Nominal value (*2) Excluding protruded parts. Minimum recycle time 1.6 secondsMinimum recycle time at full flash (how fast the strobe is ready to fire just after full flash) is approx. 1.6 sec.(*3). The Z-240 unique circuit components carries two sets of fundamental electrical parts (transformer and transistor) to achieve fast recycle time.(*3) With SANYO Twiicell 2700 Series, HR-3UTG, 1.2V, Min.2,500mAh. Recycle time/flash capacity based on INON test data. Actual values may vary depending on battery manufacturer, battery type etc. and age. Optical connection/electrical connection, digital/film fully compatibleThe Z-240 offers all advanced features including S-TTL Auto mode which supports TTL Auto exposure control by transmitting built-in flash light to an external strobe and compatibility with Clear Photo System. Optical connection system widely supports from transparent housing for compact digital cameras to a housing for digital SLRs with built-in flash regardless of make or model. Its sync connector accepts Nikonos 5 pin type cable to shoot in TTL Auto mode with a film camera or in Manual/External Auto mode with high end digital SLR not equipped with the built-in flash (*4).(*4) Usable function may vary depending on camera system and connection method EV. Controller to adjust exposure of S-TTL AutoIt is simple to fine-tune flash power in S-TTL Auto by dialing the EV Control Switch on the back control panel. Adjustable range is 3 steps to increase and 6 steps to decrease, to suit to personal preference or different exposure control characteristics among camera models. Next generation wireless TTLThe Z-240 Type 4 successfully amplifies receiving optical signal from the slave sensor 20 times more comparing to previous Z-240 Type 3 to provide wireless S-TTL Auto mode using a mirror instead of an optical cable. Attaching optional Wireless Connection Kit on the Z-240 Type 4 and combined with a housing via Shoe Base Set or Grip Base D4 Set creates a handy S-TTL Auto shooting set. 13 step Manual / 24 step External AutoThe Z-240 supports professional needs for sophisticated and precise lighting by its 13 step Manual mode with 1/2EV. increments and by semi-automatic 24 step External Auto mode with 1/4EV. increments which determines strobe output based on onboard sensor. INON unique Advanced Cancel Circuit benefits you with faster recycle time and more images per battery set to eliminate drawbacks when using with a pre-flash type digital camera where the built-in flash always burst full dump. High-intensity 180 lumen power LEDFocus Light with shutter linked auto OFF function Multifunctional Focus Light for supporting focusing as well as for using as an indicator of strobe charge status since it turns on in synch with strobe's ready LED lamp. The Z-240 Type 4 uses high-intensity 180 lumen power LED as Focus Light which is also usable as an independent diving light producing 180 lumen/20° coverage. The Focus Light automatically turns OFF in synch with shutter release where it quenches emitting light at the time of pre-flash under Optical D Cable Connection with a pre-flash type digital camera, so it is never recorded in an image (*5).(*5)Focus Light may be recorded on an image depending on camera system, connection method and shooting condition. Integral pre-flash mode detecting functionFully compatible with a camera like Nikon digital SLR cameras D700/D300/D200/D90/D80 which alter number of pre-flash between once or twice depending on shooting condition making total flashes twice to three times. The Z-240 automatically identifies number of pre-flash to activate adequate program to support proper functioning of External Auto, Manual as well as precise S-TTL Auto mode. Manual + TTL Auto mode for film camerasNewly introduced flash mode for hard wired film camera to pre-set maximum flash power in TTL Auto exposure to compensate the weakness of the TTL Auto mode. Conventional TTL Auto may not get along with a particular situation like shooting a swimming fish without colorful back ground where TTL Auto could deliver full damp resulting from TTL error. The Manual + TTL Auto mode can avoid this problem by manually setting necessary flash output for a subject to stop firing at pre-set flash amount in case of TTL error happens and benefit you to drastically reduce overexposed images.
  25. Ikelite dual strobe kit w/ 2x DS51 substrobes. Great for underwater photography. Lightly used still in like new condition, selling because I primarily shoot video now. Retail for the strobes is $400 per and dual arm kit is $425 which would be $1,225 plus tax and shipping. I'm offering the whole kit for $700 OBO. Will also consider selling pieces individually. Serious enquires only please.
