  2. People with elephant memories may remember me posting a message titled "Canon is not going the distance" in this forum 8 years ago. Complaining that Canon did not report the focus distance in the exif data of the Canon 20D and later models (I don't know if this is still the case). Having switched to the Olympus EM-5 last year and preparing for a reef-mapping trip to the Philippines I decided to look into this again. Guess what, the EM-5, or exiftool's interpretation of it, reports the estimated focus distance, the estimated image diagonal in the focal plane, and the step count from the actual stepper motor that drives the focus-elements in the lens. The estimated focus distance is a good ballpark for intermediate distances, but not for very close or distant focus. Better than nothing but not ideal. The estimated FOV diagonal is interesing and useful. But the best is the stepper motor count. The image below plots the measured (by me) focus diagonal versus 10000/step_count. I think this is amazingly accurate and easy to interpolate. With a better model of the relationship it may even turn into a straight line. For long distances it is going to remain difficult because the number of steps per distance is getting increasingly small. As was pointed out 8 years ago, a flat port would add an additional magnification but this just means I have to recalibrate once underwater or figure out the constant magnification factor due to refraction at the water/port interface. I also tried it with the 12-50mm lens. But both zooming and focusing change the stepper motor counts so it gets a bit trickier. I'll try tomorrow to make calibration curves for different zoom settings and see if I can come up with a two-parameter function or interpolation. The F3.5-6.3 aperture of the kit lens will likely also result in less accuracy then a lens with wider aperture. However, so far I am quite impressed with Olympus. Eat that Canon Bart

  4. I travelled out to the Maldives as a result of BSoUP's 2012 "Splash-in" competition, joining the MV Sea Spirit and its faithful dhoni to cruise the well-travelled but surprisingly interesting Thilas and channels of Ari Atoll. The boat looks small, until you realise that all the dive gear stays on the dhoni with the compressor and Nitrox. It's actually as comfortable as the much bigger and superficially more impressive boats that ply the Red Sea and Indonesian waters. There are still shoals of fish, sharks of all kinds (somewhat oppressed by crowds if they venture too close to the bigger resort islands), rays, turtles and pretty reefs, largely, I suspect, because of the intermittently fierce currents that squirt in and out of the atolls. For a routine trip, this was something of an eye-opener! More images: https://www.flickr.com/photos/timsdiving/sets/72157643891843663/
  5. It's taken rather too long, but I've just finished going through images from last year, taken aboard MV Sea Spirit in the Maldives. https://www.flickr.com/photos/timsdiving/sets/72157643891843663/

  8. Hello Everyone, I have finished another short film. It is called Critter Planet. It has some old and new footage in it. But it also has a story line. Also, I have added some timelapse from the International Space Station. I downloaded over 150,000 pictures to try to get what I came up with for moving earth sections. Whats even cooler, is that they allow anyone to use it free of charge! (as long as you give them credit). Let me know what you think. Please like, share and comment! Or for Youtubers!

  11. Hello All, I would like to share this link to a video that I produced and edited showcasing RED's new Dragon sensor on it's first trip underwater back in Dec. All content was shot by myself, Justin Jones, Bob Cranston and Johnny Friday: http://www.red.com/news/epic-dragon-goes-underwater-with-bob-cranston-and-johnny-friday I've been lurking on this forum for a bit but I would like to step into the light and offer up any help I may be able to provide as it pertains to RED cameras. I have been with RED since the beginning and I am personally invested in helping with RED's underwater progression...

They have extra O-rings, manuals and accessories. €600 or US$ 840 + shipping (from the Netherlands)
  13. Hello fellow Wetpixelers, During the effort to fully catalog over 5 years of underwater filming on an almost daily basis I have been finding some "Hidden Gems" that I had forgotten about due to the pressure to turn things around for the next day. I am only half way through the phenomenal number of tapes but to break up the monotony of viewing, extraction, key-wording etc I have put together a short show reel which uses a minute fraction of what I have found so far. Clips chosen mainly for how they flow into each other. So I thought I would share it with you. Footage shot between Jan 2008 and Jan 2010. Cheers Richard

  15. I'm new to photographing underwater. When I take portraits above water I like to use a reflector to bring in some extra light to my subject without using a flash. Does anybody use something like that underwater? Is it even effective? Thanks.

  17. Here's a link on Sony.com about their brand new smartphone the Xperia Z1s & its adventure to meet the manatees! I must say the image quality is quite good right out of the camera phone & I had it submerged for hours & hours with no problems (it was warm and slow for seeing manatees but the Xperia patiently waited, clipped to me while I snorkeled about). I believe Eric wanted to do more of an article on this but possibly the timing was off. Sony did link to WetPixel though: http://blogs.sonymobile.com/2014/02/13/gallery-xperia-z1s-meets-the-florida-manatee/

  20. Great deal on a Nauticam housing for Canon 7D. In excellent condition--only used on three trips. Includes 8 1/2" Nauticam dome, Tokina 10-17 zoom gear, 100mm port Hard wire ready (not included). $3,200--PayPal accepted (buyer pays shipping).
  21. I bought this used in excellent condition and only used it 5 times in the one year that I've owned it. It is by far the toughest, most versatile housing for the 7D that exists whether you are using it for photography or video. I've done both and the accessories allow you to expand and do anything with it. It has never been flooded, it is the most bullet proof and amazing dive housing I've found. I just don't use it enough. The port is in excellent condition as is the rest of it. Nauticam NA-7D Hotshoe flash connecting wire 8.5" acryllic dome port 50 extension ring Tokina 11-16 gear ring Extra set of O-rings 2 Hex sets 2 x 1"Strobe mounts w/ lanyard attached Wrist leash attached 1600 Pelican Case My asking price is $4000. I'm not interested in selling it piece by piece. The whole kit is worth over $4700. There are more photos at the link below. http://jasonandrephotography.smugmug.com/Nauticam7D Here are some videos and photos taken with this housing.
