  3. Hi Guys, I'm pretty much a complete beginner to underwater photography and filming and am hoping for some advice. I need to permanently mount an underwater camera to a boat, what features/functions should I be considering to ensure high quality, both viewing live and capturing photos/videos. What is important to me is high resolution, and being able to see through the water as far as possible. The camera will be around 1m below the surface, and next to a light, and will be displayed on a TV. For background, I work at a custom boat building company. We are going to mount a camera on the bottom of a boat we're building now to allow disabled and elderly passengers to be involved with the marine life. I appreciate any help. Cheers.
  4. I have a set of (3) XIT404 twist clamp tripod legs and a SLR housing bracket for sale. The housing bracket has the attachment hardware for a Subal housing, but I suspect you could change that easily to fit other housing brands. This is an amazing and clever system and well worth it if you are contemplating doing any kind of video work. This set is brand new, never used. I won it in a contest and never used it because I already had a set! I'm asking $625 plus actual shipping and insurance. PayPal and US shipments only please. Please check the photos. Thanks for looking.

  7. Hi all Anyone know if a HDMI recorder for 4K 60fps exists in a small and cheap packages? No monitor is required. The Atomos shugon records well, but is very expensive and so are the housings. It must be possible to get just a recorder, no monitor, fair battery life, low price, that will record as soon as it get a record signal from maybe the GH5 or other cameras. I imaging there would be a lot of us that would like to find such one. Any ideas?
  8. Here's a short video of a dive at La Jolla Cove in San Diego, CA from March 13, 2018. Poor viz so not really good quality, shot with existing light and a Panasonic GH5 w/ Panasonic 14-42mm lens in a Nauticam Housing. At least there were plenty of sharks around, although I wasn't able to get too much good footage of them due to conditions. Water temps warmer than usual for this time of year, about 59F. -Roger Uzun
  9. Hi all I am new here, and still looking to buy the right equipment for me. I am used to record video in 2.7K and 60fps. This is to me the smallest format that still looks very good on a 4K TV. But it is a must for me to record with 60fps, i get frustrated by the vibrations when looking at video recorded in 30fps and the camera is turning to follow an animal or just giving a panoramic view of the divesite. Sony has for long used 4K with 30fps at 100mbit and yes they have had a lot of heating problems, but on their new mirrorless cameras it should no longer be a problem. Now that it works it should not be a challenge for them or most other brands to set the software up for 2.7K with 60fps, the power usage should be about the same. Does anyone know why they do not include this format at all? Not even in 30fps. Is it possible to inform Sony and the other brands that it would be a good investment as it would make their existing cameras able to record 60fps just with a firmware update? I hope you will join the debate and maybe send a msg to Sony, Canon and so on.

  12. Traveled to the Philippines in Nov 2017, Coron and Malapascua. Here's a short video showing a few highlights of the trip. Some fantastic diving with great guys. 13. Let's see if a mod can split this thread On WA shots I used to place my light arms more or less at the same height of my camera. Now I try to place them higher than my camera trying to have a light angle coming from above. I like the shadows I get. Of course every reef is different so your mileage may vary. Now I have 4 lights. Two old Keldan Luna 8 CRI (5K lumen each I guess). Two prototypes built by a friend of mine (12K lumen each). I never mounted them together. IMHO I would get a correctly exposed flat image, nothing more. When a keen buddy is available I give him the most powerful set. I fill the subject in front of me with my Keldan and my buddy "flies" 1,5 meters above my head trying to light up the scene/subject from above. Then we play with different angles. I find that in this way you get amazing shadows. Sometime we get a sense of depth impossible to get in other ways. Sometime we try a different approach: I light up part of the scene in front of me filming my buddy which in turn light up further far away. Sometimes we get clips we like a lot, sometimes just trash. This video was made from two dives we experimented a lot this technique. I made a lot of mistakes (i.e. I left my lights on while being well far away from the subject getting only a lot of backscatter. The Gerardia Savaglia was completely burnt on the highlights cause I haven't zebra on my GH3) nevertheless you can see several examples of what I'm trying to explain. The amphora at 1:12 and 1:24 is light up from my lights and from my buddy above. The same scene at 1:30 is light up only by me and as you can see it's not simply a matter of exposure. The clip at 1:12 has a completely different depth of field. We used the same "tricks" on most of the clips of this video: You can see what you can get on a big sponge light up from the opposite at 2:13. Again the small gerardia savaglia from 2:40 is light up from above even in the close up clip. At 3:22 you can see my buddy moving upwards while I film the small dendrophyllia and you can see how the reef appears under this kind of light. At 4:29 an example of me lighting up part of the scene in front of me while my buddy, in turn, lights up further far away. We gently move together giving a great "sense of depth" IMHO. I understand that I have very particular tastes for UW imaging. I do not pretend to be mainstream and sometime I'm very contentious here Once you have several lights and some collaborative buddy you can be very creative. In conclusion... we never get bored underwater. Bye

  15. Hi all, I enjoy diving at sometimes challenging conditions and I do not want my camera gear to set my diving limits but I want better quality film and stills than a Gopro or similar can offer, heres my solution, I find it works well and want to share. Enjoy.
  16. I have two used Ikelite DS161 Strobes/Video lights up for sale. I purchased both of them used last spring 2017 from Ebay. I used them both less than 10 times (probably more like 4 times) and realized that they are just too unwieldy for instream photography. I recently bought a Retra strobe and I think that the size is a bit more what I am looking for. So I am now trying to offload these two Ikelites. One of the strobes has some cosmetic wear from the previous owner (see pics). The other strobe is in great shape. Both strobes are fully functional and operate well. Both have battery packs, sync port covers (metals screw caps) and both have the 1" ball adapters. However, I only have one diffuser and one charger. Looking for $1400 for the pair - shipping and PayPal fees included. PayPal or local pickup in Seattle, WA. 19. i recently purchased an Olympus TG5 after using a TG1 since its release. I didn't have much time to play with it before our trip so pretty much stuck it in UW wide or UW macro. I use two Hi-max video lights which are very bright (so much so I mostly frighten the fish). Been sitting trying to thin out my videos and really wishing I'd spent some time on holiday looking at the files while we were there. Everything, including the shallow reef stuff is BLUE! Even in 5m of water, it's very blue and when I try to correct I end up with very flat "beige" footage. Here are a few examples: Octopus: shot with video lights, less than 15m and vectorscope of image as shot Fixed image and vectorscope: Turtle shot with video lights at less than 10m. LHS uncorrected; RHS corrected Corrected image and vectorscope: I think I know what has happened, I think my lazy use of the UW mode has pretty much cancelled out my video lights. Or the lights have confused the sensor. I'm not sure what WB mode is best for UW with lights, the old TG1 wasn't quite so sophisticated as the new camera. Any ideas on how to rescue the flat looking footage? Or what is the best setting for UW video with lights on a TG5? Thanks Sharon
  20. This was posted 5 years ago, without any great recommendations at that time. Anything new out there? So many resources for underwater photography, so few for video. I found this: http://www.jeffgoodman.co.uk/Book.html– published 5 years ago. Curious if there are others I've missed.

  23. Despite almost zero information within the Red colour channel, the R3D files from the Scarlet W still grade up nicely. Took about 12 nodes to get to this point but considering the starting point of this clip, it turned out reasonably well, especially given the conditions. Conditions were tough with maybe 5 metres vis, surgy and lots of floating particles. This shot was about 18 metres deep. Scarlet W, 5k 50fps, Nikon 16-35mm and 8 inch dome on the Gates Pro Action Housing. Graded in Davinci Resolve 14.
