1. I am selling my Dive and See 7" HDMI external video monitor. I have used this monitor on my Amphibico Rouge housing, but I have sold the housing without the monitor so I now no longer have a need for it. I have all the cables and bulkhead fittings for both video and DSLR housings (the Rouge uses a larger diameter bulkhead). I also used it on a DLSR housing prior to the Rouge. I have right angle HDMI to HDMI mini adapters for DSLR use. It's an exceptionally good monitor that is extremely rugged. It has the DVI mode so that you can send clean HDMI to it that does not lose sync and blank out momentarily when you start recording like the cheaper monitors do. It has a screen protector on it, so the actual plexiglass viewport has never been exposed to any possibility of scratching. Retail with all of the cables and bulkheads was a little over $2800. Will sell for $1250 OBO. Since I no longer have a housing, I'm a highly motivated seller. PayPal OK. The monitor is currently in the US and packaged for shipment.

 3. I mentioned in an earlier thread that I had been experimenting with some video light filters with the objective of finding a better balance between underwater ambient light and the broader (red) spectrum of artificial video lights. Here is the problem, obvious in the screenshot below: the area covered by the video light has a lot of warm colour (reds and yellows) but the background is all greenish-blue. Colour-correcting this scene is either a compromise or a complex exercise of selective secondary colour-corrections. I think that I've found a cheap DIY system that can solve this problem and can be tuned to most underwater ambient light circumstances. The main component is a 4x4 filter holder made by Lee Filters. It's all plastic and rubber so nothing to rust. $20USD each at BH Photo: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/162544-REG/LEE_Filters_GS_Gel_Snap_4x4_Filter.html Here is the holder with an aqua filter (the same filter that I used in the shot further below) The slip-on rubber-band mounting system enables it to fit on most underwater video lights. I use them on a pair of iTorch 7s but they also fit the Keldan Luma4s. Here is folder mounted on the iTorch7. It can be "wriggled on" easy enough and will not easily fall off - although I do take them off when getting into and out of the water so that they don't get bumped off. The filters are pieces of plastic that I cut from document folders that I bought in stationery shops. I wandered around a few shops until I had found a mix of light blue, dark blue, aqua (green-blue) etc. The firmer document folder covers work best. I also cut some uncoloured plastic squares that are a neutral colour but make a nice diffuser for softer macro lighting for night dives. You can take a few different shades of the colour filters on each dive but I find that I can usually judge from the surface what I will need. The technique is simply to look at the colour of the water and select a filter that is the closest match. If the water looks tropical blue, use a blue filter; if it looks greenish, use an aqua coloured filter. So, here is the result. This is the same scene as above, shot with the aqua filter on both lights then quickly colour-corrected in FCPX to reduce the green and boost the reds. To my eyes, this image is very close to what it looked like underwater last week in Lembeh. (the coconut octopus inside the drink bottle is guarding eggs and in the last few days of her life). I have also used the same system in the deep blue waters of North Komodo, where a light blue filter worked best. So for $40, some time wandering around stationery shops and a little bit of scissor work, you can make a video light filter system that will enable you to balance ambient and artificial light in most situations. Regards Peter

Gates Announces Housing for Canon HF G-20 Camcorder By Hergen Spalink, March 10, 2013 @ 05:59 AM (EST) Source: Gates Housings Gates Housings announced the arrival of the HF G20 Housing for Canon's latest consumer camcorder. The housing will support the Canon Vixia HF G20, HF G10, XA10, and Legria HF G25. The major draw of the housing is the large window that allows use of the built-in LCD monitor at wide viewing angles. The housing features Gates' non-vignetting ports and an internal flip filter for natural light shooting color correction. An added benefit is the ability to use all available battery sizes meaning less battery changes throughout the day of diving. Camera : Experience Pro-level Imaging True video enthusiasts and advanced amateurs will find their inspirational match in the new VIXIA HF G20. Designed to rival pro-level camcorders in image quality, it's equipped with a Genuine Canon 10x HD Video Lens with 8-bladed iris for stunning quality video and soft, beautiful background blur. The camcorder's Canon HD CMOS Pro Image Sensor provides extraordinary flexibility with extended dynamic range, enhanced gradation, and significantly more light capture for 20% improved low-light performance*. You'll record up to 12 hours of crisp HD video to a 32GB internal flash drive or simultaneously to 2 memory card slots (SDHC and fast, high-capacity SDXC). For extra assurance Relay Recording automatically switches recording to the SD memory cards when the internal drive is full so you never miss a moment - the second card takes over automatically when the first becomes full. Dynamic SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization keeps your video smooth and blur-free, even at the long end of the zoom, and Intelligent IS ensures effortless stabilization no matter what the shooting situation. The VIXIA HF G20 can deliver simultaneous output to both the Electronic Viewfinder with pro-style large eye cap, and the bright 3.5-inch Touch Panel LCD. For easy, high-quality shooting, Smart AUTO automatically recognizes and selects proper settings for 38 different scenes, and the camcorder's rich array of manual functions and Professional Shooting Assist Functions bring a new level of control to your video. Your creativity is further supported with newly customizable Cinema-Look Filters to alter the mood and intensity of your video, and Touch Decoration options to add an element of fun and excitement.
 10. Hi all, I wonder if someone have already tried any tripod fluid video head underwater, form smooth pan/tilt camera movements? If so, what brand and model have provided the best results/durability? First of all, do you think it his really necessary a fluid head to achieve that level of camera movements smoothness, or, since the rig is underwater, a regular (no fluid inside) pan/tilt head is enough? My main concern is about how long will a fluid video head survive in the salt water conditions, maintaining it's fluid movements. I'm considering, for now, a Manfrotto MH055M8-Q5 ( just for the ability to shoot both photo and video in the same dive) or a dedicated fluid head like the 503 SERIES. But of course I would like to hear any other suggestion that you might have... Thanks! Cheers,

 19. I'm getting ready to purchase a pair of cameras for scientific video analysis of freshwater fish behavior. I've done as much reading as I can to put together a suitable system, and would appreciate the opinions of some professional underwater photographers about my plan and anything I might have overlooked. I'm going to use a stereo pair of video cameras, placed side-by-side on a crossbar on the bottom of a small, shallow, clear, freshwater stream, pointed at a drift-feeding fish (that is, a fish that maintains one semi-stationary position in the river and darts back and forth from there to intercept potential prey from the current). I need to be as close to the fish as possible, with the best sharpness possible, to resolve subtle details (for example, to see whether it "spit out" an item it just captured), yet I also need to have a wide enough view that almost all the fish's prey capture attempts are on-screen in both cameras. The fish will be anywhere from a few inches to ten feet from the cameras. I'll be using the video from the two cameras to make precise 3-D measurements of the fish's activity using software I wrote (http://www.vidsync.org), but I don't need feedback on the 3-D part of things, just maximizing image quality. To assure adequate camera placement and maximize recording quality, I need to run clean HDMI output from the cameras to external recorders, which I'll be observing from dry land up on the stream bank. I'll be setting the exposure/focus/etc and starting the recording manually, placing the cameras in the stream, and then watching the fish through the monitors on the bank to make sure the camera placement is good. One important difference between my requirements and those of most videographers is that I don't want the "cinematic" look -- I need every frame of the video to give the sharpest possible view of every detail, including moving objects (like the tiny drifting items the fish are pursuing). This means going for the fastest shutter speed I can (widest aperture and highest ISO) while maintaining adequate DoF for sharp focus throughout the virtual image and avoiding losing important details to high ISO noise. Artificial lighting is not possible, and I expect to work in a range of natural midday lighting on sunny/cloudy days or in moderate shade from trees. My plan is to use a pair of the following: Camera body: Nikon D5300 Lens: Samyang/Rokinon/other brands 8mm f/3.5 Aspherical Fisheye for Nikon AE Second choice lens: Nikon AF DX 10.5mm f/2.8G ED Fisheye Housing: Ikelite #6801.53, with hole drilled for HDMI bulkhead Housing port: Zen Underwater DP-230 9" Superdome Housing port spacer: I don't know HDMI monitor/recorder: Atomos Ninja Blade HDMI bulkhead and cable: DiveAndSee It makes me nervous that Ken Rockwell's review of the Samyang/Rokinon lens says it can focus up to 12" from the image plane, which will hopefully allow it to focus on parts of the virtual image all the way up to the 9" dome, but I'm not sure. The Nikon lens could definitely focus close enough, but it's more expensive and based on reviews I've read seems like its projection and optical performance aren't quite as good. Also I assume it would have a very slightly narrower field of view and smaller depth of field given the longer focal length. Also, I don't know what kind of spacer (if any) will be needed to approximately align the nodal points of the dome and the lens. Does anyone have experience with this combination? I'd appreciate your thoughts on the likely performance of this system, things I might be overlooking, options that might be better, etc. Thanks in advance for any help!

 23. Does anyone have any experience of using an external macro lens with a GoPro like this: http://www.hurtlegear.com.au/gopro-hero3-macro-lens-1/ I'm not sure if it would actually work underwater or if there'd be distortion (like the domed lens of the original GoPro housing). I asked the website I linked, but they weren't sure. Tony
 24. Hi All, I recently got back from a dive trip to Clipperton Island. One of the interesting things about this remote atoll is that Moray eels cover the reef and many are out free swimming during the day. They are completely unafraid and swim right up to divers. I put together this short clip of one of them. Enjoy,
