  2. Dears I bought a ys-d1 strobe from Austria " used " , I went to the water the first dive of the day and everything went perfect , without changing the batteries I go for the second dive of and suddenly the strobe started to fire on his own continuously very fast , so I plugged it off , and when I went out from the water, I checked the battery compartment and it s dry , not even single drop , but I noticed that there is some humidity inside the upper part of the strobe , and the target light is turned ON continuously, and the red led is not ON at all , I get in contact again with the previous owner and he assured that he didn't face any issue before , and when I contacted sea&sea they said that either there is small cracks OR water leaking from the battery compartment " which is very strange for me because the battery compartment is sealed from the electronic part." SO i opened the strobe and I found inside the electronic part a humidity sac and for sure there r marks of fire explosion inside . I attached some pics where u will see the burned part of the humidity sac My question is Do Sea&sea use humidity Sac inside their products ? Any solution ? Thank you Cheers

  4. I dive infrequently because I am landlocked, but every time I do get wet I try to improve my UW photo skills. My current rig is an Olympus E-M10 MKII in a Nauticam housing with one Sea & Sea YS-D1 and one YS-D2 that was purchased later. I have tried S-TTL in the past with the YS-D1 with mixed (more bad than good) results. Eventually I settled on firing the strobes in manual. This is more reliable, but I still miss some shots if I change the distance to my subject and don't properly compensate. A few years ago I added a 2nd strobe, a Sea & Sea YS-D2. Probably a stupid move when I wasn't completely happy with the YS-D1, but I was at least comfortable with the controls and the performance when it worked. When I purchased I was thinking of manual operation, and in that regard the YS-D1/2 strobes work well. Recently I've been doing some experiments on dry land to see if I would have better luck using TTL and the YS-D2's "Custom" mode. I'll cut to the chase and say no, I didn't. After setting the strobe to custom mode B, the one that it supposed to work with my camera, I tried some shots using both TTL modes and the Fill flash mode on my camera. Taking the exact same photo, not moving a thing, and waiting for the strobe ready signal, I got shots that were basically black, completely blown out, and well exposed. I don't understand how the system can be so unreliable. Consistently low or high would be easy to compensate for, all over the map just doesn't work. It's not the camera as the TTL system of the camera alone is fine. Even with the modest built-in flash, I get virtually the same exposure across the aperture range although it does drop off at f20 where the flash lacks the oomph for such a small aperture. My experiments were with just the YS-D2. Given the similar unreliable operation of the YS-D1 on S-TTL, I would hardly ever get them both to work correctly at the same time. I can't afford to change strobes our housing at this time so I have to live with what I have. Am I wasting my time messing with TTL for these strobes and my Olympus? Is there something that I'm missing? If someone has figured out the secret to make Olympus and Sea & Sea play nice together I sure would like to hear how you did it. Thanks
  5. I'm selling two YS-D1 strobes. Both work like new. One is in almost new condition and was barely used. The other one has minor cosmetic scratches on the outside but works perfectly. I'm selling because I upgraded to YS-D2 strobes. The strobes come with both types of diffusers, one ys mount, and one tube of silicone. The strobes have ball mounts installed already. I'm asking $600, USA shipping only, and buyer pays any paypal fees.

  11. Hi, I have been using my Subtronic PRO160 strobes (optic fiber) and Sea&Sea YS-D1 with a Nikon D800 successfully up to shutter speeds of 1/320 (always with optic fiber using a manual led trigger that I installed in a Nauticam Housing, with camera flash sync speed set to 1/320 auto-fp). I've upgraded my camera to a Nikon D850 in a Nauticam housing with Nauticam's manual led trigger installed as default. Yesterday I've tried my Subtronic's PRO160 UW for the first and they only were able to successfully light each photo if I used shutter speeds below 1/60 (the camera configured slower speed to use with flash in A & P modes). I was shooting in manual mode as ever, flash sync speed set to 1/250*(auto fp) (also tried setting it to 1/250 but no luck). When I used shutter speeds above 1/60 the bottom of the photos became unevenly illuminated or even black (depending on aperture, ISO and strobe power). Strobes are configured to fire with only one pulse from the trigger (as I always use). Later, at home, I've tested the strobes again and oddly they function normally until 1/200 (but at 1/250 they show the black bar at the bottom of the picture). I also tried my Sea&Sea YS-D1 and they also work normally just until 1/200 (they could have had low batteries so I will repeat the tests, but the Subtronics had full battery in the beginning of the dive). Anyone has any idea why this strange behavior? Why did they only work until 1/60 underwater? What changes to make them able to work at 1/200 at the surface? Why do they not work at the surface at 1/250 at least? I've tried everything I could remember (Camera in Single shot mode, M mode, EFCS off or on, no shutter delay activated, several combinations of aperture and ISO...). The only thing that I've changed besides the new camera, housing and new led trigger is the fiber optic cables: i used to use a 3mm optic fiber cable custom made by me (which I didn´t like because they were always failing) and now I use Nauticam standard cables (they didn't work at all with my other led trigger and the Subtronics, although they always worked with the Sea&Sea and also some INON's Z240 that I don't have anymore - all the way up to 1/320 with the D800). Any help would be appreciated: you never know when you will be busy fiddling with your camera UW and that great white will finally appear and gracefully swim by your side,, :-) Thanks, Miguel

  13. On a recent trip to Indonesia, I experienced what appeared to be a sync problem with my rig. Olympus E-M1 and Sea&Sea YS-D1 strobes. Looking to get a black background, I switched the camera from 1/200th to 1/250th. The result was a half exposed image. Searching the web, I found a thread from July 2014 on Wetpixel discussing the problem (http://wetpixel.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=53721). While a number of alternate setting combinations were discussed, there was no clear comclusion. My own feeling was that I shouldn't have to manipulate a number of settings in order to bump the speed and get a full image. Sure, changing other settings in conjunction might produce a better image. The two images demonstrate the problem. They're not particulary good in many aspects, but were shot of the same subject, the same distance, etc.. The only difference being one at 1/200th, the other at 1/250th. I sent a query to Sea&Sea describing the situation. Their response is pretty clear: Hello Bob, The SEA&SEA YS-D1 is designed to work with flash sync speeds up to 1/200. The strobes are not equipped for “high speed sync”, sync speeds greater than 1/200 sec. The strobe timing will not pair higher than 1/200th of a second, leaving a portion of the image dark. There is no update at this time if SEA&SEA will produce strobes capable of high speed sync. Thank you for your inquiry, Sea&Sea USA 2380 Mira Mar Ave. Long Beach, CA 90815 562-498-3708 I followed up by asking about the new YS-D2. Their response was the same: Hello Bob, I am sorry to inform you that the SEA&SEA YS-D2 will not sync in speeds higher than 1/200. Thank you, Sea&Sea USA 2380 Mira Mar Ave. Long Beach, CA 90815 562-498-3708 So it's pretty obvious that for those of us looking to achieve those stunning black background shots by using high speed strobe / small aperture shots, Sea&Sea YS-D1 and YS-D2 strobes are not the ones to use. If I had found this post before I bought my Sea&Sea YS-D1s, to replace my Inon S-2000s, I wouldn't have bought them. Maybe this information will help some of you. Bob W

  16. Hi I use Nikon D500 in Nauticam NA-500 with Nauticam TTL converter installed and fiber optic cable to the YS-D1 I decide to try to work in manual mode on the strobe I noticed that it can work with pre-flash only. it that true or I'm doing something wrong Thanks, Hezi
  17. Hello, I’m having trouble getting my two YS-D1 strobes to fire similarly. I’m currently at work so will have to post more examples later. My kit consists of an EM-5 in Olympus housing, flash set to fill, fiber optic cables, each connected directly to housing, no diffusers, eneloop pro batteries, two 5+8 arms and using between F3.5-F8, 1/60-1/250 shutter. What I’m noticing is that when: Setting both strobes to TTL, EV+0, equally spaced, level with lens L strobe: Correct exposure, but does not fill left of the frame R strobe: Very under exposed, completely fills right of the frame. Will post example later. Trying to compensate R strobe L strobe: TTL, EV+0 as above R strobe: Manual, EV+full, slightly under exposed compared to left of frame, fills r side of frame. Will post example later. After playing with the settings more, to compensate R strobe L strobe: TTL, EV-.5, R strobe: Preflash (but camera isn’t using a preflash!), EV+1 ,and the strobes are finally within a ballpark intensity of each other. But the left still isn’t filling as much of the frame as the right. See attached image. Any idea what's causing this? Or, anything I can do before sending them out?

  21. I'm having a strange problem with shutter synchronisation on a Nikon D600 with twin YS-D1 strobes and fibre optic triggering, 105 mm macro. Mostly it works fine in macro at f22 but if I increase subject distance I sometimes get a black border on the bottom of the photo. If I open up to f16 this goes away. I'm not sure if I move farther from the subject at f16 if the black border comes back. I have the strobes on DS-TTL II mode (red ready light). Someone just showed me that slave TTL mode gets rid of this problem (blue ready light, engaged by long press on target light button). Can anyone explain or confirm that I should be using slave TTL and not DS-TTL II mode? Images attached: DS-TTL II mode - Slave TTL mode
  22. Hi, I`m from spain, and i want to buy a couple of inon z-240 or a couple of sea&sea ys-d1. Thanks!!
  23. hi all, looking for a little advice from the experts.... i have always been a keen macro shooter but would like to try a bit of wide angle reefscape stuff without breaking the bank. as a dive instructor ive always had a pretty tight budget (!) but have managed results im very proud of with very simple canon g series set ups using a couple of DIY solutions for magnification and lighting. now i want to put together a new system and im very tempted to go for the g7x... the new sensor is bigger than some of the recent budget dslr's and reviews generally seem to be pretty good regarding image quality and focus speed etc. im confident that if i include a subsee or other type of magnification that the macro will be as good as, or better than, previous g series cameras but what im interested in is trying my hand at some wide angle stuff without having to spend dslr amounts of money... here is the kind of set up i was thinking of... canon G7 X recsea cwc-g7x housing (cheaper but still has the 67mm threaded port for external lenses) 1 or 2 x sea and sea ys-d1 strobes (might seem extravagant for the set up but seems sensible for future proofing) subsee +10 or similar inon uwl-100 or similar wide angle wet lens possible dome unit for wide angle lens (how necessary is this??) i would welcome any advice regarding this set up particularly where the wide angle capability is concerned. does anyone see any obvious problems with the set up before i financially cripple myself? all help would be greatly appreciated.... thanks, nick
