  4. Hello everyone! Getting started in underwater photography—I own the D850, and I have my eye set on the Nauticam housing and two Sea & Sea strobes. What wide-angle lens should I get? I want good glass - the D850 doesn't do too well with bad glass. Seems the overall consensus is that despite its topside performance, the Nikkor 14-24 isn't great underwater. Any suggestions would be really helpful! Also, suggestions for what lens dome to get with that lens for the Nauticam housing. Thanks, Max

  7. Hello all, While I'm an experienced terrestrial nature photographer, I am a complete novice with underwater so I could use some advice and the reasoning behind it. Let me explain what I'm looking to do and the gear I have. First of all, I'm photographing to print and print large. I print on canvas and metal a lot of times 5' or larger. With my terrestrial work, detail and sharpness has been one of the hallmarks of my work so it is imperative that I keep that as much as possible underwater. I will be on a liveaboard trip mostly snorkeling for dolphins with a few dives added in the Bahamas in the next month and that is my primary concern right now. After that I have short-term plans for sea turtles, alligators, and freshwater animals. Eventually I'm sure I will move into macro, but for right now most of the work will be wide angle and with a good amount of over-under in the near future. Budget is an issue as I just bought a camera and housing for underwater, will need a port/lens, and at the same time I am opening a gallery with my artwork. On the other hand I need to capture images of the best quality to print large or else it doesn't do me any good to save money. So my approach is to start with minimal gear needed to solve some of the initial situations and the increase the possibilities with additional gear in the future when budget becomes available. I'm in the process of purchasing a used D800 with a Subal housing. Keeping in mind the snorkeling with the dolphins, I'm thinking of starting with just a wide angle. I'm considering both the Tokina 10-17mm and the Nikon 8-15mm. I know the Tokina will only work from about 15-17mm without vignetting, but on the other hand the Nikon is really only either a 15mm or an 8mm and while the circular fisheye images look cool viewed on a screen I'm not sure if they make an art print (please tell me otherwise for anyone who has printed these type of images large). Also I have a D500 that the 10-17mm could work well with if a second housing was in my future but realistically that's won't happen for several years. The image quality might be leaning me towards the Nikon even with 2x the price tag. Any recommendations between these two in my situation? Also, is this the right focal length I should be using with the dolphins or is another range better suited? Without fully explaining my situation, ReefPhoto recommended a Zen DP-170 port. The $1000 price tag is much nicer than the $1500 Subal DP-FE4, but 170mm is only 6.7" inches vs the 8" of the Subal port or the 9" of a Zen 230mm. From reading Alex Mustard's Underwater Photography Masterclass I was under the impression that for wide angle shots a larger port is preferred for edge to edge sharpness and also for over-under work. Last questions are regarding lighting. I was considering trying to photograph with just ambient light since the depths will be shallow and I was thinking a bright sandy bottom would also reflect up a good amount of fill. Secondly, no strobes would give less drag for moving with fast-moving dolphins. Also, I know nothing about underwater strobes except from reading Alex Mustard's book and initial price checks look like it would add $1500+. Is my image quality going to be lacking without strobes either in terms of color cast or unattractive shadows? If I really should go for a strobe setup, would a single strobe be ok or are 2 necessary in this case for best results? I know I will be getting strobes eventually but if it won't make much of a difference in this situation I'd be happy to delay the purchase until I know more of what I'm doing. Thank you and sorry for the long post, Robert
  8. Hi there, I'm selling my Underwater Wide Conversion lens from Olympus as I'm getting the WWL-1 from Nauticam. It provides a 100 degree underwater angle of view (Magnification: 0.6x). It screws directly to the front of the PT housing. It is advised to use Silicone Grease for PT Series Underwater Housings on the lens threads prior to attaching. I bought in 2016 in Malaysia, used on two housings (PT-056 for Olympus Tough 4 and PT-EP12 for Olympus Pen 7). I will give as well the step-down ring 67mm to 52mm. I have attached a few photos taken in November last year (Sipadan). Everything is good condition, it was still used recently. A few micro-scratches on the front lens which do not affect the quality of the images. I have modified the caps so it can be used with a lanyard. Original invoice provided but not the box. Shipping at buyer's costs. Visible in Paris area in France (Boulogne-Billancourt). Price: 300 EUR + shipping costs (if any) Cheers, G.

  11. I have an RX100 Mk1 and Nauticam housing for it. I'd like to get some Macro lenses and trying to figure out best options. So far I've narrowed down my plan to a dedicated +5-7 diopter lens and a more powerful +10-13 diopter lens, rather than stacking lower power lenses, because that seems to be a better approach. Given that, what lenses should I get? SAGA +5 and +10? Nauticam CMC-2 and CMC-1? Bluewater +7 and Kraken +12? SubSea +5 and +10? I have a Kraken wide angle lens (KRL-4) which I like (for the price), but I ultimately want to get whichever lens will be the best value for money. Ideally don't want to go too expensive on this (the Nauticam solution for example), unless I'm given solid reasons to do so. Thanks!

  21. Aloha All, I have a Macromate close-up lens that I will be putting on ebay unless anyone here wants it. I originally used it on the older Ikelite housing with the clear port for a Canon 100mm macro. It worked great. When I moved up to the new black ports I had to grind the “U” shape out of the extension to fit the part where the two pieces come together. You can see this in the photos. So this will work on the old clear port for the 100mm or the black glass port. The following is from Backscatters website about this product……. “Extreme Macro Get incredibly sharp 2:1 (twice life-size) macro images with the underwater removable MacroMate lens for underwater SLR housings. The MacroMate doubles your 100mm or 105mm image size by allowing you to get closer to the subject. Sealed Achromatic Glass Optics Custom achromatic lenses are sealed in a glass optical housing and provide extreme magnification with incredibly sharp edges. This unique design produces much tighter and sharper images than simple close-up lenses that are exposed to water. The air sealed chamber maximizes the optical properties of the close-up lens without distortion or soft edges. The MacroMate is designed for a snug fit on the lens and when not in use, the photographer can quickly flip the lens up and out of the way. This is just the Macromate close-up lens. The port is NOT included. Specifications Optics: Multi-coated acromatic lenses sealed in an optical glass housing Magnification: 2:1 (2x lifesize) Hardware: Custom machined delrin adapter with stainless fasteners Weight in Air: 1.55 lb / 24.8 oz (most designs) Weight in Fresh Water: 0.56 lb / 9 oz (most designs)” You can see more about this on the Backscatter website. They sell them for $599.00. The first person with $300.00 plus $15.00 shipping will get this one. Let me know if you have any questions. David Fleetham david@davidfleetham.com

  25. Almost identical to a recent post, I am looking for a mirrorless camera and underwater setup. I primarily want to use it for shooting stills and macro on coral reefs, occasional wide angle wreck shots, reef scenes too; I also want to use the camera above water. The cameras I am most interested in are the: Olympus om-d e-m1 + Nauticam housing (nau-17806) + 60 mm macro lens and 12-40 pro lens (I am budget conscious though, so am open to using the Olympus housing instead) Olympus om-d e-m5 Mark ii I am also interested in the Sony alpha a7ii, A7s, etc, but I think they are out of my price range. Does anyone have a used mirrorless camera with lenses, an UW housing, ports etc. that they are looking to sell? Backscatter and Bluewater photo are offering a basic underwater setup with the E-M1 for $1699. Will need to build on this with strobes, lenses, etc, but figured I'd check with the WP community first before I pulled the trigger on one of these setups... http://www.bluewaterphotostore.com/olympus-omd-em1-bundle If not a full setup, I want to start piecing it together so I am interested in any mirrorless camera bodies, lenses, housings, etc. Thanks for all of your help!
