I will be leaving on Tuesday to Crystal River for 10 days. Does anyone know if the discussed limitations like no-go areas inside the spring, no flash photography etc, are in effect? Especially flash photography - if it is generally forbidden inside AND outside the spring, I would leave my strobe, arm, batteries etc. at home - saves some 2kg luggage... Could not find any up-to-date info on the "Fish and Wildlife" pages. Kind regards, Joerg p.s.: On a sunny and windy day, I could imagine that in the shallows manatees get a lot "strobe-like flashes" from diffracted sunrays... I took strobe photos some years ago, and not a single manatee ever showed any reaction. Only an idiot would aim the strobes straight into the eyes - why should one? There is way enough ambient light. The strobe is just to light up the belly. But try to tell that a ranger who does not dive...

I will travel to Florida in January to shoot the Manatees at Crystal River and have some questions: 1. How cold is the water? I have a 2mm wetsuit and a 7mm wetsuit. Which would you recommend? 2. Is it allowed to wear fins there? I read contradictory statements about this. 3. Which tour operator would you recommend (my preference are very small groups and lots of time for photography)? 4. How many days would you spend at Crystal River (up to 5 days would be possible)? 5. Should I bring a flash or is ambient light sufficient (I will be shooting with a 15mm FE on a D800)? 6. Can you recommend a cheap hotel close to the Crystal River? 7. Do you have any additional hints or advice for me? Thanks! Boris

Here is my manatee photograph on the cover of the Winter 2014 Alert Diver. Yes that's a new format! Also it's been around seven years since a manatee made the cover of a noted print magazine - too long! I'm also very proud there is a retrospective of my friend Ned DeLoach & his name is near the manatee, prominently featured. Great issue! Thanks to Stephen Frink for choosing my photo & printing it so well even making the golds on the bream "pop"! If I can speak for the manatees, they are pleased! Best, Carol
