  4. Due to a May 28 cancellation by one couple, I now have 2 spaces available for this trip. Either a full cabin (2 people in triple cabin), or if you travel alone either a space in a double share cabin, or at extra cost a guaranteed single cabin (you alone). Divers booked on this specific trip are from USA, Canada, Australia, NZ, Argentina and Italy - some are among the world's top award-winning photographers and some are beginners with compact cameras. Assistance with your photography and equipment is available, plus you will learn a lot from the other photographers on this trip. Raja Ampat Indonesia Liveaboard Trip - Nov 18-30, 2014 (Follow this link for Raja Ampat liveaboard dive trip prices, fees, & inclusions) In many cases the Value-Added trip price is similar to a "standard" liveaboard trip, even though I limit the guests to only 12 divers instead of the 16 a normal full charter would take. You'll experience the best Raja Ampat has to offer. Amazing reefs teeming with life, manta rays soaring above your head, odd critters discovered in their hiding places in the algae and rubble are only some of the sights you'll see. Rock islands, pinnacles, narrow passages, deep bays - every dive site is unique - we know them well and can show you the best of everything. You'll enjoy the assistance of my dive team, all of whom have several years experience working together to support my groups in Raja Ampat. You'll also get more time underwater (unlimited bottom time + we try to offer 5 dives every day); be guaranteed to have guides who know the area and the dive sites; start your trip at 9AM on departure day (so that you'll get in an extra day of diving); enjoy an additional early light breakfast; and get help with your photography. There is more, but you can contact me directly to discover the rest. Not a photographer, that's fine too. About 30% of my guests are not. I will organize you into a "dive team" of 3 or 4 with others who are not interested in photography, or are only casual photographers. You'll have your own dive tender and own dive guide! On my trips you'll be guided by my Raja-Ampat-experienced team - topside and underwater and I'll be along to supervise everything. 5. We are pleased to announce the second annual Underwater Tribe/NAD Lembeh Underwater Photography workshop for May 2014. Even better, we are adding a second location to this wonderful photographic experience: a week of learning all about Wide Angle photography in the beautiful Bunaken National Park at the all new Thalassa Dive Resort. In 2013, our five day photo workshop at NAD filled up very quickly and many folks suggested that a few days longer would have been a great addition to the class. Well, this year we listened to everyone’s desires and we have broken it down into two distinct, yet interlaced, programs. You can join us for 6 nights in Lembeh or 6 nights in Bunaken or for the true photo-holics, why not join us for all 12! It’s going to be a great event and we are looking forward to it already. May is one of the best months of the year in both Lembeh and Bunaken 7-13 May 2014 NAD Lembeh Resort Site of our original workshop and the best muck diving on the planet, the Lembeh Strait will be our home for 6 nights and 17 dives. We will arrive on the 7th and have an “Introduction and Set Up” evening before starting the diving portion of the event on the 8th. Our daily schedule will include 3 dives per day on the 8-12th and a final 2 dives on the morning of the 13th. Each day will also include afternoon and evening presentations from the photo instructors on a range of photography subjects from the basics to advanced macro techniques. As per usual with an Underwater Tribe photo workshop, the instructors will dive with slates instead of cameras and help every participant with “one on one” underwater instruction. We will also offer one to one photo critiquing each evening so that everyone gets a better understanding of what went right and what went wrong with their photos. As we are diving in one of the best muck and macro destinations on the planet, we will be concentrating more on macro photography techniques during this portion of the workshop but basic lighting techniques will also be discussed. 13-19 May at Thalassa Resort Feedback from last year’s successful photo workshop included several people requesting more “Wide Angle” for future workshops, therefore, we have listened and have included a Wide Angle week at the all new Thalassa Resort in the Bunaken National Park. We have scheduled our arrival at Thalassa on the 13th of May until the 19th. We plan to do two dives in Lembeh on the 13th along with lunch while packing our bags and heading over to Thalassa that afternoon. On the 13th evening we will discuss plans for the rest of our time in the Bunaken side of north Sulawesi and start diving with Thalassa the following morning. For anyone interested in just the Bunaken portion of the workshop they would arrive on the 13th. Our schedule is for 3 dives per day on the 14th -17th, 2 on the 18th and departure on the 19th. We will be concentrating more on wide angle and advanced techniques while diving the walls of Bunaken along with the wonderful reefs closer to the resort. The best thing about our 2014 workshop is that you can choose between a Lembeh workshop, a Bunaken workshop or get the biggest bang for your buck by joining us for both sessions and bring your underwater photography to the next level! The NAD Lembeh portion of this workshop includes 6 nights in a beachfront room, all meals, 17 boat dives, photo tuition and the seminar, transport from the airport for $1260 USD per person based on twin sharing. A single supplement is available for people who don’t want to share a room for $30 per night. There are also bungalow options available for $1367 per person based on twin sharing. For the Thalassa/Bunaken option the price is $1050 for 14 dives, photo tuition and seminar, transfer based on twin sharing. A single supplement is available for $120. For those lucky enough to be able to spend two weeks with us and enjoy diving in both Lembeh and Bunaken with 12 nights and 31 dives we offer a great promotional “combo package” for $2195 per person based on a twin share basis. We are expecting this trip to fill up very quickly after the success of last years offering, therefore, please contact us for more information and booking details at info@underwatertribe.com Or visit our website at www.underwatertribe.com as well as our Facebook Page

  13. Hi All! I just started a new series on getting started in underwater photography. The first chapter is about the importance of good buoyancy, and how to practice it. Without the skill to remain stationary in front of the marine life to be photographed, no quality shots will ensue. The following chapters, appearing weekly, will deal with everything from chosing the right camera, housing and strobes, to exposure, approaching fishes and finding the right exposure. Enjoy! Klaus
  14. Raja Ampat vs Komodo I am underwater photographer and had great opportunity to visit Komodo, Wakatobi, and Great Barrier Reef in the past. Raja Ampat was always on my wish list of places to dive, but I always postponed this trip due its duration and expenses. Could you please share with me your experience of diving Raja Ampat from underwater photography point of view? Is marine life in Raja Ampat much different from Komodo? I am not interested in sharks, rather macro life and soft corals.

  16. One of the things I love about scuba diving is the fact you never know what you are going to see when jump in. The ocean is an ever changing environment and you can dive the same areas for years and your never guaranteed to see the same things. Well, this Sunday while aboard The Sea Dog Diver out of Pompano Beach Dive Center we could never have imagined what we were about to experience. After just coming out of the water from our first dive there was chatter on the CB radio about sightings of a Whale Shark. The joke about the boat was "did they see mermaids also?". About a half hour later we get a call from the dive boat Miss Conduct saying they have snorkelers in the water just outside of Hillsboro Inlet with a Whale Shark--and they do not have a camera...and nobody is going to believe them. Without hesitation we headed that way. Everyone on board was overwhelmed with excitement. Could it really be a Whale Shark in Pompano Beach? When we arrived all we saw was a fin in the water and the captain yelled "Go! Go! Go!" and we all jumped in. As we put our masks in the water there in front of us was the most massive gentle creature we had ever seen! Just swimming a long with his entourage of fish that followed him where ever he went. The funny thing was that after the first pass we were all hooting and hollering about how amazing it was to get to see a Whale Shark, and never (ever!) imagining he was going to come back to us over and over again. After an hour he finally had had his fun with us and moved out into the vast ocean he calls home. Needless to say the trip back to the dock was filled with chatter about this once in a lifetime experience. These shots were taken by my talented husband, Craig Dietrich. Enjoy more of his work at http://www.flickr.co...aelphotography/
