So I went on my dream trip last year with my mother to snorkel with the Humpbacks. It the first time for both of to be snorkeling, let alone with whales so we decided to take it easy on get cheaper camera equipment. I got a Lumix underwater camera for both of us. Mine ended up malfunctioning on the 2nd day. Thankfully my mother's did not so I was able to get some decent shots. We are planning on going back in 2017. As for the pictures themselves, well... I'm not very pleased with them. I wasn't expecting spectacular quality, but not one of the best shots that I got prints well. I know with photography, you get what you pay for so I'm looking to get some guidance on what kind of cameras I should look into for my next trip as well as what I can do technique wise to get better shots. I'm assuming a DSLR would be my best bet? What about filters, are any type of filters recommended? Lastly, what settings should I shoot in? Here are a few pics from my trip last year. I'm not happy with the "noise" in the water, but I'm sure the camera I used has something to do with it. I think with a better camera it likely would've been a lot better. I should note that we did have pretty murky water so maybe there's not much that could've been done? I just don't know... The last pic with mom under her pec fin is my favorite from the whole trip and it looks horrible printed.

Hi All :-) We (Large Marine Vertebrates Project - Philippines) are starting a collaborative project in the Tubbataha National Park in the Sulu Sea, Philippines, this March. We are setting up remote cameras to try and quantify distribution and presence of different shark species. This work is being done in collaboration with local authorities and in respect of animal welfare. Our set ups consist of GoPro cameras with special housings to fit in power packs for up to 6hrs of recording time, and 200m proof. We've managed to secure all the bits, except the GoPros! We need a further 4 cameras as it stands. We've tested the kits with GoPro Hero 3 Silver and up. We'd really appreciate it, if you have one laying around and we could borrow it for some conservation work! We are a Filipino and American non-profit (501 3 ©), and any asset donated is tax deductible in both countries. For more info please visit www.lamave.org or email me at info@lamave.org I hope to hear from you guys :-) All the best, The LaMaVe Team.

I have been assembling a portfolio of recent images in black and white, although I seem to have been beaten to the punch by an article in Full Frame a couple of weeks ago... ... I was actually inspired by a speaker at the Wildscreen event in London last month, although I've been interested in using a "fine art" technique underwater for a long time. Black and white, 2012 - 2014.

People with elephant memories may remember me posting a message titled "Canon is not going the distance" in this forum 8 years ago. Complaining that Canon did not report the focus distance in the exif data of the Canon 20D and later models (I don't know if this is still the case). Having switched to the Olympus EM-5 last year and preparing for a reef-mapping trip to the Philippines I decided to look into this again. Guess what, the EM-5, or exiftool's interpretation of it, reports the estimated focus distance, the estimated image diagonal in the focal plane, and the step count from the actual stepper motor that drives the focus-elements in the lens. The estimated focus distance is a good ballpark for intermediate distances, but not for very close or distant focus. Better than nothing but not ideal. The estimated FOV diagonal is interesing and useful. But the best is the stepper motor count. The image below plots the measured (by me) focus diagonal versus 10000/step_count. I think this is amazingly accurate and easy to interpolate. With a better model of the relationship it may even turn into a straight line. For long distances it is going to remain difficult because the number of steps per distance is getting increasingly small. As was pointed out 8 years ago, a flat port would add an additional magnification but this just means I have to recalibrate once underwater or figure out the constant magnification factor due to refraction at the water/port interface. I also tried it with the 12-50mm lens. But both zooming and focusing change the stepper motor counts so it gets a bit trickier. I'll try tomorrow to make calibration curves for different zoom settings and see if I can come up with a two-parameter function or interpolation. The F3.5-6.3 aperture of the kit lens will likely also result in less accuracy then a lens with wider aperture. However, so far I am quite impressed with Olympus. Eat that Canon Bart

Hello My name is Jimmy and I am a complete beginner in the field of ("more serious") underwater photography. Underwater photography is something I have felt passionate about to get into for years and years since I'm a freelancing and devoted filmmaker as well as still photographer. I love shooting wildlife and highest on my list has always been to evolve into underwater photography mixing my love for the ocean and its species with my love for photography. I've finally made investments in Ikelite housing and strobes for a Nikon D7100. Currently not living in a very diving friendly part of the world and I only have approx 15 dives under my belt since I took my PADI open water certificate in 2009. My goal from the beginning when started diving is to mix it with photography but understood the necessity of becoming a comfortable diver before moving attempting to shoot underwater. After having now dived in Fiji, Thailand, Tanzania and Cuba I can no longer resist the urge to have a camera with me beneath the waves on my next trip now to the eastern caribbean (where I'm partially from). I am curious to ask advice from the more experienced divers and underwater photographers if more dives are strongly recommended before adding the complexity of photographing as well or if it should be fine as long as I feel up to the challenge? As a person and freelancer I am very active in safety measures for productions and generally have a great respect and understanding for the ocean as I have grown up partially in the tropics. Dive instructors have commented that I'm relaxed underwater and do well. Among my 15 dives I have had dives with Bullsharks and dived through short rock/cave formations which have all been fine. Hopefully this weighs in my favour but it's still difficult to guess how technically tricky the diving will become when adding the photography aspect...

Will also sell separately: Housing only: $1,000 Dome/Port only: $400

Hi, I have been working on a custom housing which was designed by me and executed by a workshop in Dubai which I will share the details later In a couple of dives I wanted to test the new housing and firmware 1.9. Let me know what you think. It was a drift dive that made it quite challenging so I used stabilization in resolve 11 for few shots. The clip is rendered at FHD. I will try to post a 4k version on you youtube, any advice on what's the best setting? I am using Resolve 11

Three weeks and sixty dives in Truk: I wonder if I have a job to return to? I travelled out from England last month, and had the usual frustrations in Manila's endlessly rebuilt but never air-conditioned airport, but arrived relatively unscathed at the Blue Lagoon resort, to dive sequentially and promiscuously with Americans, Australians and, later some rather aloof Englishmen (but not the Germans, who frowned at a photographer's acceptance of the actuality, if not the intention, of solo diving), guided by the superlatively knowledgable and experienced Trukkese guides. Two weeks at the Blue Lagoon, and a week on the "Odyssey", a byword under JJ for both organisation and diving tolerance. I had made the reacquaintance of the Fujikawa Maru and some other old friends when a new adversary claimed my attention, and my camera: the San Francisco Maru ate the glass dome off my port. I have to acknowledge a debt to Shannon Conway, who brought out a new D800 and a fisheye lens from Australia, and Nauticam who sent a 230mm dome. The San Francisco Maru... ... 50m to the deck, and ruled by jealous local gods (JJ claims that its title, the "million dollar wreck", comes not from its impressive military cargo, but its appetite for cameras). My own appetite for an image of its tanks and trucks kindled, it took five dives and many cylinders of gas to get this wreck out of my system. I shouldn't forget the other stars: the sagging but still impressive Fujikawa Maru, the famous "R2D2" air compressor now protected, not by small corridors and stairwells, but dangerous and unstable corroded decks and tangled pipework; the beguiling Shinkoku Maru, the introspective and shrouded Kensho Maru, the bold Nippo Maru, rescued from ignominy as a water tank to a new life as an historical monument, the doomed aircraft, the equipment that never left the Hoki Maru to build roads and runways, the engine rooms of listing, twisted and inverted ships... ... and the remnants of men, shattered and lost to war, seventy years ago.

Selling very lightly used, like-new condition Ikelite housing, ready to go with 8" dome port. This is for the Nikon D700. Great kit but I got a diving injury, so I won't be needing it any longer. Used 5 times and only once in salt water. Asking $1100 - kit was $2000 new. Also have the D700 camera for sale, if interested.

Hello Everyone, I have finished another short film. It is called Critter Planet. It has some old and new footage in it. But it also has a story line. Also, I have added some timelapse from the International Space Station. I downloaded over 150,000 pictures to try to get what I came up with for moving earth sections. Whats even cooler, is that they allow anyone to use it free of charge! (as long as you give them credit). Let me know what you think. Please like, share and comment! Or for Youtubers!

Putting this up for sale on e-bay in a couple of days. If you'd like to make me an offer before it's listed (oiro £1250), the details are below. If it doesn't sell privately before it's listed, I'll add a link to the ebay auction. Thanks for looking! Aquatech D2 (Water) Sports Housing Designed For Nikon D300 Your chance to get your hands on a top quality housing for your Nikon D300 dSLR. The Water Housing is constructed from solid epoxy, making it lightweight to handle in the water and durable in use. Perfect for use around, in, or under-water up to a depth of 10 metres. Camera installation is quick and simple thanks to the quick release clips which also feature safety latches to prevent flooding. The backplate places control at your fingertips allowing the housing to look, feel and operate your camera as you would ordinarily do on land, using tactile controls. The housing is in excellent condition, having been rinsed in fresh water after every use. The backplate does have a few cosmetic surface scuff marks and scratches, but nothing that affects the integrity, operation or usability of the unit. The housing has never flooded or leaked, metal parts are not corroded. O-Rings are in good condition. Included with the housing: The 3 ports that are the most useful and usable to give you a good range of shooting options: LP-3 8" Dome Port: Used with wide-angle and fish-eye lenses. This port is the one you'll need if you wish to shoot under-water, or a combination of over/under-water. This port has only been used in a swimming pool environment and is therefore in excellent condition, pretty much as new. Suitable lenses include (but not limited to) - 16mm f/2.8 Fisheye, 10.5mm f/2.8 DX Fisheye,18mm f/2.8, 20mm, Tokina 10-17mm, Sigma 8-18mm f/2.8 LP-1 6" Dome Port: Used with wide-angle and fish-eye lenses. This port is suited to above water use (curvature of port too shallow for underwater use). This port has been used in the ocean, but is still in a good condition, having minor scratches which I do not believe affect optical quality. Suitable lenses as for the LP-3. LP-5 Flat Port: Used with standard lenses. Probably the easiest port to use - small surface area is easy to keep clear of water drops. This port has been used in the ocean, but is still in a good condition, having minor scratches which I do not believe affect optical quality. Suitable lenses include (but not limited to) - 18mm f/2.8, 20mm f/2.8, 24mm f/2.8, 28mm F2.8, 35mm f/2, 50mm f/1.4, 50mm f/1.8, 85mm f/1.8 ND-900 Flash Housing: Using an external flash/strobe unit really opens up the creative opportunities the water housing can offer you. Essential for shooting underwater, or above the surface in low-light conditions, or use it as a fill-light when shooting in the direction of the sun. Specifically designed for the Nikon SB-900 Speedlight, the housing provides full control of all flash functions including iTTL - making accurate results much easier to achieve. Please note that although currently functioning, the in-housing sync cord cable is frayed and should be replaced. Pistol Shutter Release: This makes the handling of the unit much easier - I preferred to hold the housing using the pistol grip, rather than the hand grip on the side of the housing, although I still trigger the shutter from the shutter release on the top of the housing. If you wish to use the pistol grip shutter release, you will need to replace the 3-pin connector on the end of the cable as the end of the wire has frayed. You do not need to replace the entire cable as this is still sound. Leash attached to Pistol Grip, allen key, spare short bolts (used when flash housing not required) , flash sync cord, D300 fixing plate and spare bolt. IMPORTANT Please note that as with any water housing, the seals are only as water-tight as the operator makes them - for this reason I will not accept any returns on the equipment. If you're local to West Wales, I am happy for you to view the item before bidding, to demonstrate that it is fully water-tight. If you are a successful bidder, you will need to fully familiarise yourself with the method of attaching the lens ports and back-plate and take responsibility for cleaning, re-seating and maintaining the O-rings before and after every use. It is good practice to assemble and disassemble the housing a few times, dunking the unit in a bucket of water or the bath to make sure you've correctly understood the procedure before you fit your camera and take it out in the "real-world". If you don't have a Nikon D300 and are interested in purchasing one to fit the housing, please contact me. I am willing to ship internationally, please contact me for a direct quote.

I travelled out to the Maldives as a result of BSoUP's 2012 "Splash-in" competition, joining the MV Sea Spirit and its faithful dhoni to cruise the well-travelled but surprisingly interesting Thilas and channels of Ari Atoll. The boat looks small, until you realise that all the dive gear stays on the dhoni with the compressor and Nitrox. It's actually as comfortable as the much bigger and superficially more impressive boats that ply the Red Sea and Indonesian waters. There are still shoals of fish, sharks of all kinds (somewhat oppressed by crowds if they venture too close to the bigger resort islands), rays, turtles and pretty reefs, largely, I suspect, because of the intermittently fierce currents that squirt in and out of the atolls. For a routine trip, this was something of an eye-opener! More images: https://www.flickr.com/photos/timsdiving/sets/72157643891843663/
