Hi everyone, I have a GoPro hero8 in the basic supersuit housing, and plan on using it more underwater. For that purpose, can I check if anyone has a GoPro tray / arms / filters setup which they would like to sell? I quite like the Backscatter kits but open to consider others. If you want to sell the whole thing including the GoPro I can consider that too, depending on the price. I am based in Sydney, Australia Cheers, Nicolas

hi all, Just to set the scenes, I am a newbie in videography (topside & underwater) but my wife and I have 13 years experience shooting underwater photos. Our UW cameras have had video capabilities for the past 10 years (Nikon D7000, Oly OM-D EM5, Nikon D500, D810), but we have never pressed the record button, except by mistake! We are just getting started into videography, watching through tutorials and the good work of some of you. I will start recording videos myself soon, though I don't have high ambitions, I'd need advice on the gear to start with. My needs are recapped hereafter: -my wife and I are both photographers, and this will remain our main underwater imagery focus (we're going down with a Nikon D500 and Nikon D810) -from time to time, one of us will be taking videos, essentially these will be filming the other one while he/she takes photographs or just dives around. -most of our diving is shallower than 25 meters -occasionally, if a rare encounter/behaviour shows up and our DSLR lens aren't a good fit, we might capture a video -occasionally, record a family video when our kids try snorkelling -occasionally (maybe), some vlogging videos -at some point I might get video lights, probably not at the start The options I see: 1/ Using my son's Olympus TG-6. He's not using that camera too often yet so we can borrow. However we have zero accessories so far, so thinking I would need to get a housing, plus maybe a WA conversion lens. 2/ Getting a recent GoPro, such as the Hero7 Black or more recent I will need to get a housing too. I take that GoPro have a single fisheye lens, so field of view will be wide enough for underwater scenes by default. 3/ Using the built-in video functions of our Nikon D500/D810. I doubt this would be the right course of action as A/ I may not have the right lenses mounted (still diving for photography as a priority) and B/ even if I have the right lens mounted (e.g. a Tokina 10-17mm), adding video lights at some point would make our DSLR rigs really too bulky. I am really hesitating between the TG-6 and GoPro. Not sure which has the best image quality, and any other considerations I should look into? cheers Nicolas

For sale: GoPro HERO7 Black, in mint condition, always used inside the underwater housing (which never had any water inside). No scratches on the body, screen or lens. Underwater housing (Super Suit) has normal signs of wear, front lens is mint with no scratches. Housing works perfectly and never had any water leakage. It is rated to 60m / 200ft. Also included are two batteries, a Sandisk 64GB MicroSD card, several mounts, and a very nice hardshell carrying case that fits everything. I'll also throw in a red flip filter from Backscatter which is quite scratched up. This doesn't show up in the footage. The filter has protected the front element of the housing very well, that's why the housing lens is in such good condition. Asking price: $160 and I'll cover shipping from Phoenix area + PayPal fees

Hi, my name is Marcell Nikolausz. I’m a hobby underwater videographer originally from Hungary, living now in Germany. There was a recent discussion about the underrepresentation of videography topics at wetpixel. I also missed discussions about the lower budget video solutions. I’m very much interested in the latest and greatest tools the professionals are using, but those equipment are way beyond my budget and it’s true probably most of the readers of wetpixel. So I thought, I initiate a discussion about low-budget videography. Is it possible at all? I started with underwater videography already during the film era using a Minolta dynax 7000i in an Ikelite housing. That time the acceptable video quality was really expensive, while I could easily afford the same film David Doubilet used (but my photos were still crap in comparison but not because of the “sensor quality”). Especially wide angle video and proper lighting was achievable only for bigger film crews. Today, a cheap action camera has a better quality at a fraction of price what was available 20 years ago for professionals. I get into videography when I purchased a sony nex-5 and I explored that it has a video record button but I was not really hooked at the beginning. The real change happened when I got a GoPro HERO (entry level version of HERO 4, approx. 130 Euro) and started to play with it and decided to get more into videography. I watched many videos on youtube and vimeo but most of them were really bad with lots of shaky camera movements causing sea sickness on land. The other major problem I recognised was the bad colours but somehow I expected it. So I wanted to make completely different underwater films. I watched also many BBC documentaries and films from professionals. I especially liked the work of Howard Hall and it was clear that he used tripod a lot. So my first suggestion is to use some kind of tripod or some other kind of stabilization for your camera. My first solution was a flat rock. I glued a GoPro mount on it and attached my camera. I also tried joby gorillapod but it’s too light for such small cameras. My second solution was a modified aluminium tent-peg. (see picture below). Not much later I invested into a second camera. Instead of a top GoPro I bought the much cheaper Yi 4K (around 200 Euro that time). (It fits better to the low-budget videography). The camera choice will be the topic of a next post. Overall, it was really fun to use these cheap cameras and I created a short film that I entered to the actioncup video competition. It’s a German video competition focusing mainly on small cameras and it has a category for action cameras. My movie won the freshwater category. See the movie below (Sorry but the text is German but I hope you will watch it anyway): Overall the budget of this movie was around 400 Euro. One short footage from this was even used in a bigger TV film (broadcasted in Slovakia) Next post will be about low-budget but relatively good quality cameras.

Interested in how replacement lenses such as these non-fisheye lenses sold here would perform underwater - the camera still fits in a standard GP housing and the replacement doesn't seen to affect camera waterproofing https://www.peauproductions.com/collections/gopro-hero-7-6-5-lenses Looking into this 3.37 mm f2/8 lens in particular : This is from the maker's website Given specs are as follows: Model Number GP33728H7 Focal Length 3.37mm 35mm Equivalent (on 1/2.3" sensor) 19.0mm Hyperfocal/Infinity Focus Distance 32.07in (81.46cm) Fisheye/Barrel Distortion NO Black Vignetting NO Weight (Stock GoPro Lens = 5.5g) 6.83g Angle of View (V*H*D) 70 x 87 x 100 degrees Aperture (f Stop) 2.8 Back Focal Length (BFL) 2.97mm Dimensions (Diameter x Length) 17.35 x 22.32mm Native Camera Sensor Support 1/2.3" Native Megapixel Support 16MP Thread Material Metal Optics Material Glass - 7 Elements Fits in GoPro Waterproof Case? Yes Has anyone tried these or similar? Looking at examples given, results look promising in terms of reducing fish-eye corner distortion, especially when shooting with the cameras's 4k wide fov. Not sure how these would fare underwater though.... Cheers, b

I've been reading some posts online recommending that for "on land" shooting, the Hero 7 sharpness be set to "low" for more natural looking footage. I haven't gotten to use mine in the water yet but I'm wondering if settings of "medium" or "high" might yield better results underwater where the overall environment is less sharp than on land due to less that gin-clear visibility. Any recommendations for WB of "auto" or "native" (or some other choice) would be helpful, too. I'd be free diving with the camera a depths of 30ft of less. Thanks!

Hi everyone Ive been around the forum for a while but never posted before. Im in a bit of a quandary, I have a nice 5DmkIV but no experience or equipment for underwater. To date Ive used go pros and recently purchased the 7 black. Im by no means a professional, I like to take photos blow them up and hang them on the wall and in a coffee table book I put together but thats it. Ive read a lot of good stuff on the TG5, and Ive been watching some underwater housings for my canon, but the more I read and learn the more indecisive I get. I have a dive trip to Bimini to swim with hammerheads in a couple weeks, from what Ive heard thats only 15-25 feet deep and want to take some great photos! Debating if strobes would be necessary and toying with getting strobes for the GoPro? Is that silly? Then I have a trip to Fiji next month which Id like to bring some equipment, but dont really want to lug a huge pelican case across the planet. Is there a efficient backpack size setup for my Canon that I can get? Does anyone have experience with a GoPro and strobes? Is the Olympus significantly better than the GoPro? Does anyone have any tips for hammerheads? Ive read a few posts. Also is anyone selling an old housing or set up that would fit my mkIV. Thanks for any and all responses, I feel like im out of my depth here.

I am selling my SLP Waterhousing for surf photography. I purchased this surf housing brand new from SPL Warehousing in San Diego for $1699.00 USD. I used this several time taking images for friend and family surfing in Southern California. This SPL Waterhousing is designed for the Nikon D7000 camera body. When I purchased the surf housing new, I bought it with the Flat Port. I didn’t have a fisheye lens at the time so to be compatible with the Nikon Nikkor 18-70mm Kit lens. It worked great with that lens I just had a slight bit of vignetting at 18mm. I could also zoom out to 70mm. The 70mm was handy on big wave days if you just did not want to get too close to the close up action in the impact zone. I am selling my SPL Surfhousing, because I have recently change camera brands and the new Sony brand is not compatible with this housing. This housing has never been flooded, nor have the seal been compromised in any way. All the glass is scratch free and in pristine condition. I still have the Nikon D7000 camera body if you are interested in purchasing as a package. Item that are included. A-Series SPL Watrehousing (Welded Aluminum) Flat Port (wide angle) Neoprene Port Cover Detachable Pistol Grip with Trigger Detachable Side Grip 3/8 nuts Plastic Wingnuts GoPro Mount Silicone Grease SPL Waterhousing Nikon D7000 A-SERIES camera waterhousings are not dive housings, they are splash rated for water action sports only. Although not made for underwater diving photography, they are great water housings for photographing surfing, sailing, kite boarding, bodyboarding, fishing or many other shallow water activities. Construction: Housings are constructed of ultra light weight aluminum. Sheared, formed on a sheet metal press brake then welded solid by a certified welder. All aluminum is hard anodized to protect against salt water corrosion. The water housing is then painted with industrial powder coat paint. Features and Controls: ▪ Aperture ▪ Shutter speed ▪ Manual shutter release ▪ Back focus (by request) ▪ Detachable flash option ▪ Interchangeable Ports ▪ Other controls can be added for an extra cost Depth Rating: ▪ 15-20ft ▪ All housings made by SPL can handle any size surf you have the nuts to swim into. ▪ These are not dive housings and they should not be treated as such. Weight and Dimensions: Weight 3 lbs with fisheye port and pistol grip

Our group dove the Thomas Hume with Double Action Dive Charters last Friday. We are working on collecting video for a presentation about wreck diving on the Great Lakes. This will be presented to our local dive club in a month or two. Along with some prior videos and another dive weekend coming up. Anyway, been shooting stills forever, pretty green with this video stuff, especially underwater. This was all shot with a Panasonic G9, GoPro 5 and a drone I used to have.... Not much drone footage as you will see. My piloting skills from moving objects need work. All that said, I’d love feedback. Good and bad. Still working on stability, white balance, color grading and transitions. G9 housing was positively buoyant and that didn’t help. Dove it without my strobes and that was a mistake from a buoyancy perspective. Taking the video setup to the pool this weekend to get it weighted properly without strobes. https://youtu.be/qbhnfvPMHzs

Hi all, My GoPro Hero5 recently flooded. I had used it underwater only twice in the 19 months I have had it, never abused it, and had all ports shut securely. Both times it was submerged in fresh water only about 3 feet deep, without an additional housing (the Hero5 is supposed to be waterproof to 10m/33ft without a supplemental housing). Because it is out of warranty, GoPro won't replace my camera, but they offered me 40% off a new Hero5 or Hero6. I'm honestly not sure I want to buy another GoPro - one of the features I liked about it was that it was supposed to be waterproof without an additional housing - but I did find that the cam filled a few small niches and am considering replacing it. I have read a number of reviews with other users having the same issue - water gets in the camera even when doors are completely shut and the camera is used at shallow depths - and am wondering if the Hero6 has a better track record in this regard. Can anyone comment on their experience using a GoPro Hero5 or Hero6 underwater (particularly in shallow water without an additional housing)? I don't have a dedicated underwater setup, and am not purchasing a GoPro primarily for underwater use (I like it as a super portable pocket camera that I can use with gloves on in the winter and as a wearable POV cam for some activities), but I like having the option. Thanks in advance!

Went Snorkeling here in San Diego, CA this AM (April 1st). Water temps were very cold, 50-51F. Still there were several turtles around, and some seven gill sharks as well. I don't know how the turtles can stand such cold water. The air temps were warmer but the turtles never seem to leave the water so... Here's a short video of the mornings swim, shot with a GoPro Hero 6 Black - -Roger Uzun

GoPro Hero 4 Black in good condition and good working condition. This GoPro has an awesome skin on it that makes it stylish and unique. I always got compliments on the look of it. -->Can easily be removed. Dive housing shows some light superficial scuffs or scratches - normal wear from use. Housings right button itself has some scratches on its edges. The top button itself has a small amount of scratches on the edge - not effecting performance. Refer to photos - zoom in. GoPro itself only shows signs of normal wear from use - no scratches on the lens and no scratches on the screen - good condition. Refer to photos. Additional photos can be sent upon request. Includes: GoPro Hero 5 Black with instructions ~ $500 MSRP Housing with solid backing and skeleton backing Charger Adhesive mount (hinge not included) Screw and nut Dual battery charger with extra battery. Used - normal wear ~ $50 MSRP Polar Pro Switchblade combo filter - great for macro photography (for use with close up subjects only - red filter for underwater use). This item was only used once. Like new condition without box. ~ $80 MSRP Polar Pro red filter - for underwater use. Takes away blue/green coloring by adding red. This item is used and only shows signs of normal wear. ~ $30 MSRP Total MSRP ~ $650 Micro SD card not included. I recommend at least 16GB. Preferably 32GB. I use 64GB. I also recommend GoPros 3 way pole. I use that on land and underwater. It includes a tripod within the handle. I even use the tripod underwater and use it to film myself carving my pumpkin underwater on Halloween! Bonus items: A float - for optional adhesive mounting to the back of the GoPro. Useful if snorkeling or on a pole being used from a boat (GoPro will not sink if it comes off) Double sided adhesive would suffice for adding it to the back of the GoPro. A red filter for the inside of the GoPro (some divers prefer red filters on the inside. I prefer the outside one because it can easily be removed while in use after surfacing) This GoPro has traveled the world! From diving the Tectonic Plates in Iceland to Diving with Killer Whales in Northern Norway to the Colosseum in Rome and Great White Sharks in South Africa to zip lining in the Amazon Rainforest! I hope that it's next owner continues to take this GoPro around the World! I'm only selling this one because I'm upgrading to the Hero 5. This package is an underwater lovers dream! The GoPro is the best action cam to capture extreme adventure. My Hero 2 was even inside a great whites mouth and came out without a scratch. What an awesome video that was! Use this GoPro for all your wild adventures and tell your story! US Seller Priority shipping to the states (No international shipping) Selling price $345 Shipping $5 Don't forget to download the GoPro app on your phone. You can even use your phone as a remote with it! And Go onto GoPros website and download GoPro studio for easy to use step by step video editing and/or GoPro's Quik for even faster editing.

The GoPro HERO5 Black and Session cameras have been announced for release on 2nd October. http://shop.gopro.com/International/cameras Waterproof but only to 10m, so you'll still need a housing for most diving Still only 4k 30p max, same as the HERO4, which is a little disappointing as I was dreaming of 60p @ 4k Electronic Image Stablization (EIS) but limited to 1080p as it's stabilized and cropped in software, not hardware More bells and whistles such as voice control and integration with their new Karma drone So really there's nothing significantly new for the underwater shooter who wants to shoot 4k. Unless I've missed something? Might still get one for trekking etc. and for some underwater wide angle when shooting macro.
