  1. Hi there, Here is some footage I shot back in February from a Sailfish trip at Isla Mujeres. I tried to show the perspective of what a photographer goes through to get the shot. Rough conditions and elusive Sailfish made it a tough trip but the baitball action we were able to find was incredible.
  2. Greetings from the Hotel Playa la Media Luna in Isla Mujeres, Mexico! Welcome to the forum thread for the 2015 Wetpixel Whale sharks trips. Our first group is leaving today, and we are in the process of welcoming the group for the second trip. This topic will be the place to post images from the trip and share experiences from what is undoubtedly one of nature's great events. Every year many whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) gather in the waters between the islands of Isla Mujeres and Contoy to feast on the eggs of the little tunny (Euthynnus alletteratus) that spawn in the sea. This gathering has been going on for a long time and it presents an amazing opportunity to see and document large numbers of whale sharks behaving entirely naturally. Wetpixel has been running trips to explore the aggregation for the past 7-8 years and we are planing out trips for 2016 already! These are typically oversubscribed, so if you are interested, please get in contact via PM or email. Here are a few images to seed the thread! Trip leader Cristian Dimitrius hiding from the whale sharks! The big (and small) guns! Our amazing first group almost doing a Mexican wave!
  3. Going end of June for a 9 days trip to Cancun area for diving and I need to tips regarding where to dive and some decent dive shops. I will start with two days on Isla Mujeres for whale sharks snorkeling. The plane will arrive Cancun around 1600 and then I will go to the Island. Should I make a booking or just fix it there? Any tips which company I should go with, or are all the same? Is it any points doing any normal scuba from the Island also? Done more or less all my diving in South East Asia in good locations so a pit picky when it comes to dive sites. After that I have different options: I want to do some diving in the cenotes (fresh water caves / holes). Any tips for where to be located? Playa del Carmen or is Tulum OK, any good dive shops which are recommended? And finally; how is the diving in Cozumel? Is it worth going out for a couple of days? Thanks in advance Vaga

  6. Hi all, I'm sitting in the Radisson in downtime Cancun having just spent 24 hours getting from the UK to Mexico. From tomorrow, the first group of fellow shark watchers will be arriving, with us getting out on the water from Wednesday. There have been other groups out this season, and their reports seem very good. Lots of whale sharks, and mantas as well. My aim is to keep the Wetpixel community updated about the trips in as real time as the internet will allow. Please keep checking back here for more info, images and trip reports. I should also point out that I have brought out some fun new toys to play with, including a Canon 6D/Nauticam housing/Zen 4" port, Inon wide-angle wet lenses for the Powershot G15, Backscatter Flip filters for the GoPro HERO3 and housings for the iPhone 5 (!) Adam (who isn't excited at all!)
  7. Hi all, Do you want to see more whale sharks in one day than most people see in a lifetime. Do you want a series of up-close encounters with them or to record stunning imagery featuring these amazing creatures? Over the past few years, Wetpixel has run photographer-friendly trips to Isla Mujeres, Mexico in order to observe and record the world's largest aggregation of the world's largest fish. This year, we have a few spaces on the first trip which runs (30 July to 5 August), and 3 spaces on the second trip (5 to 11 August) still available. These represent an amazing opportunity as they are normally heavily over-subscribed. Full details of the trips are on the Wetpixel Expedition page. Below is some video of Eric (and a few whale sharks) from the trip in 2011: For more info or to book, please email Dan Baldocchi Adam
  8. Overall not a very productive week in Isla Mujeres due to weather, but we did hit a bait ball being torn up by some bottlenose dolphin. They sure tear things up more than the sailfish do. Not the best image, but the water was just a mess of scales and turbulence, so this pic tells the story.
  9. I had a guest cancel due to medical reasons for my Aug 5 - Aug 10 Whale Shark Trip in Isla Mujeres ( Cancun) Mexico This will be a single room and the price would be $1647.00 Included is 5 nights single room, 4 days on our private charter with myself and the 4 other guests, two crew and taxi to and from the ferry dock and airport You would arrive in Cancun on August 5th (connections are usually Houston, Miami, or Fort Lauderdale) taxi to the ferry terminal (taxi is included) then the short ferry to Isla Mujeres. and return on Aug 10th with a flight that leaves no earlier than 11am to make sure you can make the transfer back to Cancun. http://www.gregorysw...com/contact.php http://www.gregorysweeney.com/trip_whale.php I have offered a discount price because I would really like to be able to fill this spot and return some money to the guy that cancelled. Hope to see you Isla Mujeres, Gregory Sweeney PS my friend who is down there now said that the action and water conditions have been really good - it is going into full moon which is the most active time !!
