Hi all, I've looked into Maldives now (or Burma/Mayanmar, but I'll do a separate thread for that) for diving, where a few of us will all go diving together. I've been to the Maldives twice, but I didn't do any diving until the second go, and that was pretty impressive! We're looking for: Reasonable accommodation/diving costs Big pelagics if possible (hammers, mantas, whalesharks? ) Night diving Local island diving, resorts will push the price up too much for my friends Any macro would be awesome but the focus (pun intended) is wide angle So far I've found: Fulidhoo - seems to be the best choice so far? Unfortunately perhaps not a hotspot for big pelagics, but good night diving with loads of sharks Ukulhas - we may be a bit too early for this, seems December 'tis the season. Maafushi - I can't find much info about this unfortunately, and the videos I've seen have been fairly lacklustre. I know it's a typical list for a 'low budget' Maldives holiday, but if anyone can help out that would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, sinetwo

I'm looking at booking a private group charter on the ScubaSpa in the Maldives. I unfortunately won't have time to do the usual site visit/test trip due to scheduling, so I'm looking for feedback from anyone who has been on their current boat and experiences their services first hand. Luxury level of the boat? Quality of service? Issues you experienced? Problems/obstacles to be aware of? This group is a traveling group of glamour/nude models, shooting mostly for playboy and maxim magazines. We'll be doing very limited diving, mostly looking for remote beaches, privacy, and complete relaxation on the boat when not working. Quality of service/food and level of luxury are the two biggest concerns for the group as this is 50% vacation as well. Thanks for your input!

Attached a little clip from our trip to Addu Atoll, the southernmost Atoll of the Maldives in January 2017. Most scenes are from a single dive at "Manta Point" on 14.01.2017, with a few shots from "Gan Kandu South" dive-site added for good measure. Shot on Sony AX100 camcorder in a Gates housing. Video lights (Keldan 4x) where only used in one shot. All other clips are ambient light shots. Color corrected in Davinci Resolve, edited in Final Cut Pro X. Music: Dag Reinbott: The Saviour Hope you enjoy :-)

Southern Atolls, Maldives - Part 2
escape posted a topic in Shooting Technique, Workflow and Editing
https://vimeo.com/92446796YouTube : http://youtu.be/dHs4VsC9rz8 Marine life of the Southern Atolls in Maldives. Shot on Canon 70D in Nauticam housing. Lens using Canon 10-22mm, Sigma 8-16mm behind 9' dome. Most of time I was using continuous AF and it's works well. The 70D is probably the first Canon DSLR with a usable continuous aufo focus system on video mode, it's smooth and doesn't jerk or hunt. Shot 1080P, All-I, Standard profile (1,-3,-2,0). No color grading or sharpening in post. Thanks, EJ. -
Dear all. I published a gallery of wide angle and some topside shots I took using the Olympus OMD EM5 (Nauticam housing). Pictures are a mixed bag taken with the 8mm using the 4,33" Dome and 7-14mm using a 170mm Inon Dome with D&D 50mm MIL to Inon Adapter. http://andre-schwarz.smugmug.com/Underwater/Wide-Angle/ Comments or recommendations are welcome. Kind regards. Andy

I travelled out to the Maldives as a result of BSoUP's 2012 "Splash-in" competition, joining the MV Sea Spirit and its faithful dhoni to cruise the well-travelled but surprisingly interesting Thilas and channels of Ari Atoll. The boat looks small, until you realise that all the dive gear stays on the dhoni with the compressor and Nitrox. It's actually as comfortable as the much bigger and superficially more impressive boats that ply the Red Sea and Indonesian waters. There are still shoals of fish, sharks of all kinds (somewhat oppressed by crowds if they venture too close to the bigger resort islands), rays, turtles and pretty reefs, largely, I suspect, because of the intermittently fierce currents that squirt in and out of the atolls. For a routine trip, this was something of an eye-opener! More images: https://www.flickr.com/photos/timsdiving/sets/72157643891843663/

I spent one week snorkeling on the Maldives together with my family. It was my first attempt in underwater photography. Of course I had lots of problems with the camera and the result was not as good as I had hoped for. Nevertheless I got a hand full of acceptable images out of this trip and it motivated me to learn more about underwater photography. You can find some more information about my experience on this trip on my travel blog: http://wild-places.com/2013/06/15/maldives-my-first-attempt-in-underwater-photography/ Here are some images from this trip (all shot with DP2M). C&C welcome. Hello dear All, I found this wonderful creature in Hellaidhoo Thila, inside a hover hang. It's very shy, as soon I illuminated it, it start to close slowly, than it appear as a flat sponge. Any idea what is it? Thank you so much. Marco

Just came back from my forth trip to the Maldives (last time almost 8 years ago). This year I was on MV Theia, a quite comfortable liveaboard (but without enough proper places for camera storage, and no Nitrox), on a 10 day trip. We encountered some problems in the beginning, due to a broken engine of the dive vessel ("Dhoni"), which caused a start delayed by two days. The rest of the trip was nice, including encounters with whalesharks and some very nice dives with manta rays at channels in the western side of Ari Atoll. You can see some of my images here (hope you enjoy): My current impressions of the Maldives as a diving destination are as follows: - still a good combination of pelagics, some nice reefs and good macro shooting opportunities, all this in very warm waters - unfortunately, most of the touristic islands are now suffering from the epidemic of water bungalows, resulting in a strong impact on the formerly idyllic landscape - shark populations dramatically smaller than 8 years ago, presumably due to still strongly ongoing finning - where I frequently used to see groups of maybe 10 grey reef sharks, now you are lucky to see one or two - many dive sites crowded (even in low season) - at some sites that used to be beautiful (e.g., Fish Head) we saw groups of 30 Asian tourists at "discover scuba diving" sessions, not having any bouyancy skills at all - Fish Head and Maaya Thila now almost destroyed I might be too spoiled as a diver already, therefore commenting a bit harsh, but maybe this will help somebody to plan for the next diving vacations. And I would wish the clock had stopped 15 years ago, when the Maldives used to be quite simple, but with beautiful reefs full of life. Coral bleaching hit them hard in the past, but finning and kind of touristic development are their own responsibility. Merry christmas, everyone. Gazpacho
