Hi, I am about to use this light to produce a short caving film. The light will be used both topside and UW (on a 4k camera rig) in an underground lake. Not at any deep depth. The torch itself is supposed to be good to 100m (it's got a double O-ring seal, magnetic switch etc). Anyway I just wrote some blurb and did some quick initial tests for temperature (not as in K) for how hot it gets if used topside. The build quality looks good. But why I got it is because it has a UV function (un filtered 365nm) and I want to use this to highlight some basic fluorescence within this particular cave system. It's hot off the press from these guys at Xtar. Not sure what others think about their dive/video lights but this one appears initially quite good (ask me again after taking it underground for a while LOL!). For this project I needed to use a more powerful light than my old TUSA's and I had to have a magnetic switch The front optic/port is coated (can't be seen in this image) There is of course a sturdy 1/4 inch 20 tripod mount. I'd like to see a bigger charger for this type of 26650 battery but the supplied charge does work, one just has to make sure the battery doesn't "jump up" due to the springiness of the charger's contact at the -ve end. Anyway here is also a link to more details about this light. https://hardcorecampingtools.blogspot.com/2020/09/xtar-d30-1600-scuba-divers-video-light.html

Strobes VS Video Lights - Can underwater video lights be used for underwater photography? A few years ago I was a strong believer that video lights were just not powerful enough, but my opinion on this has totally shifted - Video on the matter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjmYtUQCFOw

Hi Everyone!! I am new to underwater photography, but not new to the ocean. I recently graduated with a B.S. degree in Biology and will embark this year on several trips around the world as I dive into a several research projects. I focus on marine microbiology and coral reef ecology and virology. I am in the market for a new camera and I have no idea where to begin. Any help and advice is so appreciated. I have some grant money that I can use to buy a camera, but my max budget is around $1500. I am going to Tubbataha and Palau in two weeks for a dive trip, and need something that will help me photograph the reefs. I will also begin research on manta rays this year, and I will need something capable of taking sufficient ID shots of their bellies. I realize having a strobe would be helpful, but I don't think I can afford that right now. So far, I am looking at buying used gear, the Olympus TG-5 with housing and wide angle lens, and the Canon GX7ii with housing and wide angle lens. Thank you!

Hey there, I would love to try my hand at UW photography but I am realizing that my basic photography knowledge and skills might not be enough to dive into UW photography. Does anyone have practical example for me to start with? Thank you so much. PS: I own a sony RX 100 mark II and I guess that the "RTFM" rule applies too!

So first off, I'm shooting with a Canon 7D MII in a Nauticam housing w/ 8' acrylic dome. Switching between a Canon 18-55mm 3.6f & Tokina 10-17mm 3.5f fisheye. I've been on a few trips now with other photographers, we are shooting in water with almost perfect visibility, ranging from 20-30m. Why is there so much dam haze in my photos? It makes the water look like there is barely 3 meters of visibility. It looks terrible, I've compared shots in the same time frame to my Gopro 6 and other photographers cameras and the difference is huge. They shoot with sony's, no extra lighting and their RAW images look amazing already, I can edit mine to look semi decent but the outcome is below average. I don't understand what's happening, I've attached some jpeg samples of unedited RAW images. Is there some setting on my camera that I'm missing, is anyone having this issue with the same model camera?

Hi everyone, This year I made a short film advocating for shark conservation, and I worked with shark conservationists Cristina Zenato in the Bahamas and Jim Abernethy in Florida to tell their personal stories, as well as my own. I showed it at Aperture Gallery in NYC in May, and as part of the official selection of the Wildlife Conservation Film Festival in NYC in October. Would love for you guys to check it out and tell me what you think! www.vimeo.com/juliabahlsen/cageless Julia

I used this set-up as a beginner and moved up to a mirrorless recently. I am asking $125 + shipping (within the US only) for the whole package - tray/arm, strobe, camera with one battery & charger plus the Olympus housing. It is set-up and ready to use. The FE3010 is a 12 megapixel point-and-shoot camera with 3x zoom, several auto modes to choose from including video capability and underwater modes. The Strobe I paired with the camera is a manual Sea n Sea YS-27DX. It is very easy to operate underwater. This is my go-to camera and strobe when in a 'panic' mode.

Hi all, I'm looking forward to trying out my new rig, but would love to go on a boat which is catered for photographers. Doesn't have to be overly serious, but someone who's able to position the boat in a decent manner to make it easier to try and get head on shots, or have a boat with fresh water etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as at the moment we have the following ear marked, "On Isla Mujeres", due to the bigger boat and less of a propensity for sea sickness (yes, even the hardiest of sea scurveys get sick on these boats). Thanks!

Hey everyone! Like many, I was bitten by the dive bug and being an avid photographer, purchased an underwater camera housing system in 2014 thinking I would dive ten times a year and take a whole heap of awesome photos/video. Alas, real life has a way of bringing you back to reality and finances have dictated that the gear must go to free up funds, having been used on one dive in Canada. I currently live in Ireland but was home recently to take photos (photo files are too big so please contact me via email to see the photos!) of the gear and if there is interest, I will be back in Canada in july for a wedding and could arrange a paypal transaction and ship the gear then. I bought the gear for approx $7200.00 CAD + tax and am looking to sell it for $6500.00 CAD. It is all packed and ready to ship too! This is an unreal deal tbh as some of the gear has never been used and everything else has literally seen water once and not even salt water, for that matter. Unfortunately, given my current location, I cannot take further photos but would be happy to answer any questions you might have to the best of my ability. Thanks and hope I can find the gear a good home with someone who will put it to good use! Cheers, Adam
