  1. Hi all, some months ago I bought a couple of new flash Subtronic 270 pro with external batteries in the flash arm. I am using them in manual mode by connecting them with optical fibers to a mirrorless camera Olympus OM-E1 mark 1. In order to synchronize the flash with camera I used the setup procedure indicated by the Company and It worked by adopting the configuration with “1 preflash”. Since two days, one of the flash does not work properly in the sense that when I select the full power or 1/2 power to the flash it fires but there is no possibility to synchronize the flash with the camera. I made all possible tests: redoing the setup, trying with no preflash or 2 preflash configuration but it does NOT work (no synchronization is possible) On the other hand when I select any power since 1/4 to 1/32 of the power it works! the synchronization is fine (in the 1 preflash configuration). Have you any suggestion? any reset that I can try to apply? Did anyone encounter the same problem? Thanks a lot for your feedback and attention cheers

  3. Hi, I have been using my Subtronic PRO160 strobes (optic fiber) and Sea&Sea YS-D1 with a Nikon D800 successfully up to shutter speeds of 1/320 (always with optic fiber using a manual led trigger that I installed in a Nauticam Housing, with camera flash sync speed set to 1/320 auto-fp). I've upgraded my camera to a Nikon D850 in a Nauticam housing with Nauticam's manual led trigger installed as default. Yesterday I've tried my Subtronic's PRO160 UW for the first and they only were able to successfully light each photo if I used shutter speeds below 1/60 (the camera configured slower speed to use with flash in A & P modes). I was shooting in manual mode as ever, flash sync speed set to 1/250*(auto fp) (also tried setting it to 1/250 but no luck). When I used shutter speeds above 1/60 the bottom of the photos became unevenly illuminated or even black (depending on aperture, ISO and strobe power). Strobes are configured to fire with only one pulse from the trigger (as I always use). Later, at home, I've tested the strobes again and oddly they function normally until 1/200 (but at 1/250 they show the black bar at the bottom of the picture). I also tried my Sea&Sea YS-D1 and they also work normally just until 1/200 (they could have had low batteries so I will repeat the tests, but the Subtronics had full battery in the beginning of the dive). Anyone has any idea why this strange behavior? Why did they only work until 1/60 underwater? What changes to make them able to work at 1/200 at the surface? Why do they not work at the surface at 1/250 at least? I've tried everything I could remember (Camera in Single shot mode, M mode, EFCS off or on, no shutter delay activated, several combinations of aperture and ISO...). The only thing that I've changed besides the new camera, housing and new led trigger is the fiber optic cables: i used to use a 3mm optic fiber cable custom made by me (which I didn´t like because they were always failing) and now I use Nauticam standard cables (they didn't work at all with my other led trigger and the Subtronics, although they always worked with the Sea&Sea and also some INON's Z240 that I don't have anymore - all the way up to 1/320 with the D800). Any help would be appreciated: you never know when you will be busy fiddling with your camera UW and that great white will finally appear and gracefully swim by your side,, :-) Thanks, Miguel
  4. I am selling all my UW Photo set as I stop diving. All items have been always well taken care of. Camera (Sony A850 , http://www.whatdigitalcamera.com/reviews/digital-slrs/sony-alpha-a850) has 4000 actuations and really looks like new. Sensor has been professionally cleaned. All lenses are perfect, no dust, no scratches, no mold... etc. The housing has never been flooded, and perfectly maintained. All O-Rings checked. The housing has a built-in leak detector (LED and accoustic) Comes with the standard viewfinder and a complete set of spare parts (o-ring, accessories) the 2 ports come with rear cap to protect the baionet, as well as neopren cover to protect the glass The dome port has really NO scratches. The 3 strobes (2 for macro and 1 for the wide-angle/fisheye) have been services by Subtronic and works perfect. Expect minimum 150 strobes per charge at full (1:1) output and 400 strobes 1/4 power (1:4) what I used most of the times. Hence 3 dives per day without any problem before recharging. Complete set as new was more than 12,000€. Current market price of each item would put it at 6,200€. I will let it go at 4,000€ to be discussed. I pay the shipping fee to any country with SwissPost PostPac International ECONOMY (15-30 days delivery). SwissPost PostPac International PRIORITY is 70€ more for a delivery in 5-10 days that i will let decide. I would accept payment via Bank transfer to Switzerland. I am also OK with PayPal if we share the costs, maybe easier for you. (I believe around 100€ each) Here is the full list. _____________________________________________________ Photo gear Market price as used Sony A850 Full Frame DSLR 500 Minolta 16mm f2.8 Fisheye 375 Sigma 105mm f2.8 Macro 420 Sigma 12-24 f3.5-5.6 II DG HSM 475 Minolta 20mm f2.8 250 Housing BS-Kinetic for Sony A850 1000 Super Wide Angle (8.5") Dome Port 800 Flat MacroPort 120 200 Extension Ring 30 100 Extension Ring 50 100 Extension Ring 60 100 O-rings and set of accessories 0 Strobes Subtronic Mini + charger 400 Subtronic Mini + charger 400 Sync Cable S6-N5 85 Sync Cable S6-N5 85 Subtronic GAMMA + Charger 600 Sync Cable N6-N5 85 Arms and Tray Tray 0 I-Das 10cm (x4) 100 Clamp (x6) 150 TOTAL 6225
  5. I'm selling the following accessories: One 10Bar Nikonos N5 Y Splitter Cable. 70 € Two Subtronic Optocontrol for older Subtronic strobes (fire your Subtronic Alpha/Alpha Pro/Mega/Maxi/etc. strobes by fiber optic). One with Sea&Sea connector and the other with Inon connector. 70 € each. Three Subtronic Nikonos N5 sync cables. 30 € each PayPal payment. Items located in Portugal. Will ship within Europe.
  6. Seems, Subtronic has a fiber adapter (called "TTL Optosensor"). What should I expect, compared to Inon's fiber TTL connection? S&S is limited in sync, how would older Subtronic strobes (e. g Maxi & Midi) equipped with the ttl slave sensor fare? Besides, are there any competitive optical->n5 TTL converters around? The Heinrichs Weikamp site doesn't list the RX100 family on its compatibility list:(
  7. I was wondering, does anyone use strobes with different power in pairs? (coverage, CT the same) I am about to buy a venerable Subtronic Nova - which is the third most powerful light known to me underwater (2nd being its successor pro270, first Baker) which I might pair with a Subtronic Maxi. GN's underwater: 20+16, other characteristics match. If I am right with the formula, I should expect GN 25.6 total (2 novas would result 28), worse case the "maxi side" of the objects ~2-3 stops shadows - which is unlikely to prevail, because where shadows are visible (macro+other close-by stuff) both strobes would operate at very low power settings.
  8. Hello all, This is one of my first posts, and not for the best reasons, I'm afraid. I have a Black Subtronic Nova with a I 06 version of Heinrichs Weikamp ttl converter built inside. Bought it from E-Bay around 2013 and always happy with it. Used on a Nikon D70 and later on a D7100 which I'm using right now. Strange as it seems, the ttl worked flawlessly on the two cameras until I sent the unit to repair. On January this year the strobe had a problem and didn't fire anymore. I was in Gili Trawangan, North Lombok, Indonesia. Opened the unit to see if something could be done, and it smelled burnt on the inside. Took pictures, mailed Subtronic and decided to send it to repair in Germany. That cost me close do 200 USD through DHL, but I needed it and could not find a replacement. On 27th February it was sent back. It was really fast repair. I payed 405 euros, including shipping. I had it sent to Singapore since I needed to go there anyway, and I would be easier with customs. (Where I payed 60 SGD more). That was expensive but I really had no option. Collected it tested it alone and it fired. I thought it was all right. Then, returned back to Indonesia and on 10th April (after buying a second, refurbished unit from Subtronic) when I did a test before diving, with the strobe attached to the housing, there was no TTL anymore (nor manual, on the digital entrance). E-mailed Subtronic, who stated that the TTL unit was working when they tested in there. Now the sad/funny part begins: -They were trying to make me believe the TTL version could not work with Nikon D7100! It worked before, hundreds of times! -Then they tried to make me believe it was bulkhead or cable failure, stating that it if a single connection was not good, the digital entrance wouldn't work at all, even on manual. That was not true also, since my previous Nauticam bulkhead had a pin broken from using Sea and Sea cables, and the digital entrance worked with that (just not in TTL). So now I have a pair of Subtronic Novas, with no TTL, I'm on Labuan Bajo, close to Komodo, and Subtronic doesn't assume the problem!!!! They lied to me regarding the way ttl worked, they lied me regarding cable connection, just not to mention that there was no other option than the ttl was burnt when my strobe was there for repair. Next time (there will be no next time for me anyway), that something from Subtronic cease working, better to buy something new from other brand. Just to let you know. P.S. - I have bills, mails and photos to support everything I'm stating.
  9. Does anyone have experience/knows the Subtronic Maxi and Mini strobes? I see an opportunity to pick up a pair 2nd hand. Since they are older models, I cannot find too much info on them, especially specs of the maxi. How do they compare to the z240 in terms of: - total weight? - reliability? - service demand (life of the flash tube? It is different than the 5500K units of Inon)? - performance/GN under water? I would also be interested, if the units can be converted to use AA-batteries, the battery arm is a good idea, however a bit restrictive in case you want shorter arms. Also I see it uses an electrical connection, is it possible to interface it to optical? (TTL or non-TTL)

  11. Hi all. I'm selling a pair of Subtronic Alpha (not Pro version), with cables and chargers. Both batteries in good condition (one recently changed for 3rd party better than original). They last more than 2 dives, and actually never got to the end of them. Glass is scratched but that doesn't affect performance. Cables are really used but work ok. These are MANUAL strobes only. Selling just because they are heavy comparing to the Nova I also own. Can provide a custom made splitter for free if your housing has only one bulkhead. Prefer to deliver in Bali or Lombok but happy to send anywhere if buyers pay shipment costs (and customs). Payment by paypal or bank transfer to european account. Can send pictures on demand. Contact me here or through Alexandreribeirodossantos@hotmail.com
