Free in February! The ebook Polynesia ~ An Ocean Realm by Pete Atkinson available for download from this Dropbox link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/g8jkf4yz82jyqep/Polynesia - An Ocean Realm EBOOK.pdf?dl=0&fbclid=IwAR0eu0D-3r7t7ZM9pNxVlN35WZWhE6n0VHo5EhJiOjhkctcltYzl5bpeJgY Inspired by the underwater explorer Jacques Cousteau, Pete Atkinson bought an old yacht on the south coast of England in 1982 and sailed to the South Pacific. He had no experience, relevant qualifications, life-raft, radio, GPS (or insurance) but he says, "I had read a lot of books and I had a plastic sextant I had bought at a jumble sale..." He also had a degree in marine zoology. For 20 years he sailed 45000 miles all over the South Pacific having the life of which he had dreamed, diving with whales and sometimes too many sharks. He found adventure above and below the sea aboard a beautiful, but somewhat marginal, wooden yacht! Escaping the rat race is the dream of many, but few achieve it. This book shows that with passion and determination anything is possible, even on a limited budget. Pete made ends meet by shooting pictures underwater - using home-made acrylic camera housings - and writing articles for diving and sailing magazines. The twelve chapters cover French Polynesia, the Cook Islands, Kiribati, Tonga and Pete's favourite, remote Beveridge Reef, where there is no land at all. But it has what he loves most, exceptionally clear water and lots of sharks! Two appendices look at the Moody-built cutter Eila and underwater photography. This is a book not only for those interested in adventure in the ocean, Polynesian life, marine biology, sailing and diving but also those who aspire to escape a humdrum life and become a pirate! About Pete Atkinson. Award-winning Getty Images photographer Pete Atkinson studied marine zoology at Bangor University in North Wales where he learned to dive. His articles have appeared in Cruising World, Classic Boat, Tauchen, Diver, Sportdiver, Dive New Zealand etc and his photos have won many awards, including the Innovation Award at the the 2004 Wildlife Photographer of the Year and the award for "Best British Underwater Photographer" in 1999 and 2001. He now lives in Phuket, Thailand with his wife, photographer Darin Limsuansub.

About to go on a trip and snorkel with humpback whales! I am wondering if anyone has done this and if they had any lens recommendations. Will be shooting a 5d iv and for lenses - bringing a Canon 17-40 and Tokina 10-17. I assume this will cover everything, but don't know how close they allow you to get. Thanks!

I am looking to organize a special trip to swim and photograph some of the most majestic creatures on the planet, the humpback whale. I am looking to go in 2017 during the peak of the humpback migration where thousands of Southern Hemisphere Humpbacks migrate from Antarctica to the warmer waters of Tonga. The sheltered bays and inlets around Tonga provide the perfect nursery for mothers to teach their calves all about being a whale! Ive personally observed many humpbacks around Oahu and off the coast of Maui and Im completely blown away by their size! Its a magical experience to be in their presence. Tonga is one of the few places in the World that allows people to legally get in the water with these gentle giants. Swimming with humpbacks is a privilege and we must not forget that heavy regulations and laws have allowed people this amazing opportunity. We must respect the laws and obey them. Spaces will be very limited, and only a small group will be allowed in order to maximize everyones water time. Who would like to join me on this once in a life time adventure? For dates and prices please email me (photographybyleighton@yahoo.com) or message if you are interested! Spots are very limited! Once in a life time opportunity!

My new video of humpback whales in Tonga. This is made in 2016 with 2008 30i HDV footage which I deinterlaced then slowed down from 60p to 30p (before the mother and calf, which is real-time). I hope it conveys some of the sense of awe of swimming with these magnificent animals. Feedback, positive or negative, is welcome.

So I went on my dream trip last year with my mother to snorkel with the Humpbacks. It the first time for both of to be snorkeling, let alone with whales so we decided to take it easy on get cheaper camera equipment. I got a Lumix underwater camera for both of us. Mine ended up malfunctioning on the 2nd day. Thankfully my mother's did not so I was able to get some decent shots. We are planning on going back in 2017. As for the pictures themselves, well... I'm not very pleased with them. I wasn't expecting spectacular quality, but not one of the best shots that I got prints well. I know with photography, you get what you pay for so I'm looking to get some guidance on what kind of cameras I should look into for my next trip as well as what I can do technique wise to get better shots. I'm assuming a DSLR would be my best bet? What about filters, are any type of filters recommended? Lastly, what settings should I shoot in? Here are a few pics from my trip last year. I'm not happy with the "noise" in the water, but I'm sure the camera I used has something to do with it. I think with a better camera it likely would've been a lot better. I should note that we did have pretty murky water so maybe there's not much that could've been done? I just don't know... The last pic with mom under her pec fin is my favorite from the whole trip and it looks horrible printed.

Here's my attempt at a year end video, this is the big animals section, so consider it part 1 of 2, as a Lembeh video will be coming soon! I was very lucky to have some great trips in 2014, everything was paid for so i'm not doing any dodgy promotions for freebie stuff! I think we chose quite well with the operators that we used. I'll be doing some things differently next year with the sardine run to get more in water time, but other than that lots of great experiences.

September 21 thru 27 – Ha’apai, Tonga – 2 spaces left Join Tim Rock’s privately chartered 50-foot catamaran yacht to cruise the stunning Ha’apai Islands in Tonga in search of humpback whales, marine mammals, manta rays and stunning coral gardens. Tim will offer three charters with experts Dave & Tris Sheen in September 2015, which is the height of humpback whale season in Tonga. The yacht offers the finest crew of whale experts to be found in beautiful Tonga. The Sheens promote “sustainable interaction” as part of their business, believing the more that islearned about humpback whales, the better the chances of protecting them. We’ll watch their surface antics as they breach, tail slap, pec slap and romp in the sea. They will have heat runs (dramatic fights by males to gain the attention of a female) that we will follow and watch for the victor. And we will watch while snorkeling as new calves suckle milk from their mothers while resting. We’ll also watch as baby tries to learn from mom by doing breaches and other surface activity. We will enter the water to snorkel only with the humpbacks and videographers and photographers will be led to the best vantage points to get the best images and footage of the humpbacks. This catamaran is a broad and stable platform and is great for viewing and shooting topside whale activity. The sea level entry is perfect for in-water encounters with humpbacks and other marine mammals . Exit is also very easy. Space is limited to just four guests per one-week trip. Tongan law says that only four people and a guide can be in the water with a whale or whales at any time. By having just four guests, everyone is assured of getting in the water every drop, every day, for great interaction and observation. This is a special opportunity to have your own private charter and do what few humans in the world ever dream to do… swim one-on-one with the largest mammals on the planet. The charter is 7 days and will cruise through the 62 islands of the Ha’apai chain in beautiful Tonga, over-nighting under the stars at various isles along the way. We will visit deserted isles with fruit bat colonies and white sand beaches. We will also snorkel beautiful hard coral reefs and look for fish shoals and manta rays. We will have the opportunity to try stand-up paddle board, catch a fresh fish dinner and enjoy the beauty and serenity of this amazing island group. John Ruthven, a former producer of the BBC (including the Blue Planet), and a fellow underwater photographer has started a Youtube channel called Indoona, strange creatures of the sea. This collection of sea creatures includes familiar giants like aerial shots of blue whales and squids to strange deep fish like the Fangtooth and other weird and wonderful denizens of the sea. He's hoping to build his library as his production work continues.
