  1. Hi everyone, I'd love to share some photos taken during my first year of underwater photography, with my TG6 and Backscatter MF-1 strobe. These photos were all taken at various shore divesites in Victoria, Australia, from September - November 2022. It's primarily macro since my current setup isn't conducive for wide angle. I've sinced moved to Vancouver, Canada, and will hopefully be doing plenty of diving here soon as well! However, I'm also looking forward to diving again in Australia in the near future! Eventually I would like to experiment more with wide angle, and also potentially upgrade to a MFT system which will help me get the increased image quality & manual control I am craving, while keeping a more compact size. Any critique and feedback is welcome, I'm here to learn!
  2. Hi all there is a proposal for shark culling in Western Australia because... well they eat fish. If you care to learn more, here's a summary: https://www.scubadivermag.com.au/western-australia-shark-cull-proposed/ Please sign the petition, and share: http://chng.it/rzpswtBNHJ @adamhanlon worth putting on Wetpixel front page?
  3. As a primary wide angle shooter it has been years since I have bought a new macro lens. To date I use the 60mm Nikkor and often add the Kenko 1.4x teleconverter for extra reach. I have had the older style Nikkor 105mm and sold it as I didnt get much as the AF hunted around. I have been looking at the Tokina 100mm macro as a replacement for the old 105mm for an upcomming macro trip to Tulamben in a few weeks and it has recieved a few good reviews for on land use with price point which suited me more as I do not do much macro photography and didnt want to invest more money in lenes that I may not use often. First thing that I noticed when I attached the Tokina 100mm to the D500 was how quick AF locked on and with the large amount of focus points available it was easy to set up focus on the small critters eyes/fave when composing a shot. Quick moving subjects when one wouldnt bother with before where now accessable as the Tokina and D500 combination works. This quick focus was a blessing as the local conditions where surgy and often hard to steady oneself for close up shots. The Tokina 100mm was housed behind the Aquatica AF macro port with extension #18462 (the same as I use with the 60mm and 1.4x TC combo). Shooting macro with Aquaview external viewfinder also makes ease of pin point focusing. I will be hopefully playing with the Aquatica +5 and +10 with Aqautica close up system when in Bali as I want to try my hand at getting some supermacro subjects like Shean the Sheep and friends. Itorch videopro 6 video lights used on low power provided focusing light. Here are some sample photos taken in the past couple of days with the Tokina 100mm and Nikon D500. Photos are straight from the camera only watermarked and resized to give an idea of performance before editing. 4. After a week or so of bad weather here locally I had the chance to dive with my favourite lens the Nikkor 10.5mm FE and my new Nikon D500 housed in an Aquatica AD500. Its taking a few dives to get used to the button layout but I am getting there. Here are few sample test shots which are straight from the camera and have only been sized and watermarked. Conditions were a little challenging as there was good current today and low vis. f9 1/200th ISO125

  7. Here are a couple of minutes of shark action taken on Queensland's 'Wolf Rock' which is only two hours drive north of where I live on the Sunshine Coast. It's not quite Tiger Beach, but it's great to have as a local option Progressive HD video taken with my tiny and trusty RX100, I can't believe what I used to lug around! Enjoy http://vimeo.com/116288732
  8. I was out in the Nullarbor caves over Easter, shooting for a client. Once we were done with work my buddy and I headed off to a different cave to get a few dives in. The video from one dive is below. It was half shot with my Canon 5DII, half with my buddy's GoPro. He's the diver in black, I'm the diver in yellow. If I'm in the shot without the camera, my buddy is getting to grips with his first go at a dSLR. He had a good crack at keeping it steady! Olwolgin Cave is characterised by stunning rock formations and haloclines in the water, so I needed to shoot through water that hadn't been swum through yet. Most of the shots are pushing the camera forward slightly to prevent the fuzzy water from enveloping the dome port. Here are a couple of shots taken of the same cave system, both on the breathers and on the subsequent dive in sidemounts. You can see the stirred-up halocline water under my knees in the first shot.
  9. Recently, I had a work trip to Adelaide in South Australia and I decided to add a few dive days. I knew a few divers there via my Sydney dive buddies, and the local diving community was exceptionally friendly and welcoming. We did 2 days at the Rapid Bay Jetty, a structure from the 1930 densely covered in intebrates and weeds, and populated by lots of fish, among them the fantastic leafy seadragons. Enjoy! I also wrote a brief essay about the biology of the leafies.
