Hello, I am looking for an advise on selection of an internal color filter(s) for Gates AX700 / Z90 housing. This housing comes with a red filter, but the filter could be changed for another color. Seller recommended me to buy both red filter (for blue water) and pink filter (for green water), as according to him "Water conditions vary due to time of day, currents and particulate in the water." Among other recommendations on internet, here is a typical recommendation: Pink Filter (for use in green water), OrangeFilter (for use at depth up to 15m), Red Filter (for use at depth of 15m or deeper). Could anyone recommend a good article on color filter selection for UW videography? I am diving only in warm water, i.e. Indonesia, Philippines, Caribbean, etc. Also, Gates' color filters are quite expensive ($138US), so I would like to know if there is another manufacturer of good 'pro' quality color filter elements? Thank you for your recommendations.

Im looking for advice of recommended white balance strategies for filming using video lights. Im primarily a photographer so have a good grasp of the theory there but obviously video is different (less light, no RAW etc). I currently have a V6K (12000 lumen) single video light and primarily testing wide angle subjects, diving in the tropics. What is the best option for getting a sensible white balance with this type of setup? I did experiment setting the colour temperature of my lights as a white balance but havent found the results there great - far too green and washed out. Is this simply because the light isnt powerful enough ? Im getting far better results on auto and the deeper i go, the better it is (i guess due to less ambient light getting in the way,again, is this just a lack of power)? Is there any merit in trying to take a manual white balance via a grey card or slate with the light on and using that? Last time i tried that i had some very odd colour shift and results so maybe its my technique? Im aware for wide angle i really need 2 lights for coverage and 12,000 isn't overly powerful which wont help but basically im looking for advice on the right technique to get a decent white balance on the video.- 22 replies

Despite almost zero information within the Red colour channel, the R3D files from the Scarlet W still grade up nicely. Took about 12 nodes to get to this point but considering the starting point of this clip, it turned out reasonably well, especially given the conditions. Conditions were tough with maybe 5 metres vis, surgy and lots of floating particles. This shot was about 18 metres deep. Scarlet W, 5k 50fps, Nikon 16-35mm and 8 inch dome on the Gates Pro Action Housing. Graded in Davinci Resolve 14.

I need some help from you out there. About a year ago I swithed from Sony V1E to the NX5E (w/ Amphibico). It was a struggle ... with Amphibico going out of business and my 1st NX5 having massive electronics problems. Now all seems to be OK technically. BUT... to make a long story short... the NX5 just doesn't seem to deliver the crispy, color rich and clear images I used to get from my V1E. Even in FULL AUTO, the V1E delivered quite acceptable pic's, as where the NX5 needs extensive Picture Profiles to even come close to the V1. Above water the NX5 is great, underwater it seems to forget it's a camera! EVEN a $250 Go-Pro seems te make sharper video that the $5000 NX5 !!! MY QUESTION TO YOU ALL, has anyone had any experience with the NX5? And if yes what are those? Positive/negative? What settings do you use? So I need some advice here. Not really sure what to do. I am shooting video of a ship wreck next week (The Duane in Key Largo). Most of the shooting will take place at around 100ft. Here is my underwater video setup: - Canon T2i - Ikelite housing - 8 inch dome - Tokina 11-16mm 2.8 - Equinox Red Filter Now for my question. If you take a look at the red filter that I am using, in the description on B&H it states that it will work in "up to 70ft of water." So what happens to your colors after you pass 70ft? I am not using a light, so I am wondering if I should just shoot the Duane without this red filter and without a light. I mean, what are my options? And what is the smartest way to go? I've been shooting on the shallow reefs of Key Largo, and I must say the red filter (with no lights) does do the job well, giving me nice color. I just don't have any experience shooting in the depths below 70ft. And I really want to know why this filter says it's only good for 70ft... Thanks for any help. - Jason
