  2. Hi everyone Ive been around the forum for a while but never posted before. Im in a bit of a quandary, I have a nice 5DmkIV but no experience or equipment for underwater. To date Ive used go pros and recently purchased the 7 black. Im by no means a professional, I like to take photos blow them up and hang them on the wall and in a coffee table book I put together but thats it. Ive read a lot of good stuff on the TG5, and Ive been watching some underwater housings for my canon, but the more I read and learn the more indecisive I get. I have a dive trip to Bimini to swim with hammerheads in a couple weeks, from what Ive heard thats only 15-25 feet deep and want to take some great photos! Debating if strobes would be necessary and toying with getting strobes for the GoPro? Is that silly? Then I have a trip to Fiji next month which Id like to bring some equipment, but dont really want to lug a huge pelican case across the planet. Is there a efficient backpack size setup for my Canon that I can get? Does anyone have experience with a GoPro and strobes? Is the Olympus significantly better than the GoPro? Does anyone have any tips for hammerheads? Ive read a few posts. Also is anyone selling an old housing or set up that would fit my mkIV. Thanks for any and all responses, I feel like im out of my depth here.
  3. I am selling my SLP Waterhousing for surf photography. I purchased this surf housing brand new from SPL Warehousing in San Diego for $1699.00 USD. I used this several time taking images for friend and family surfing in Southern California. This SPL Waterhousing is designed for the Nikon D7000 camera body. When I purchased the surf housing new, I bought it with the Flat Port. I didn’t have a fisheye lens at the time so to be compatible with the Nikon Nikkor 18-70mm Kit lens. It worked great with that lens I just had a slight bit of vignetting at 18mm. I could also zoom out to 70mm. The 70mm was handy on big wave days if you just did not want to get too close to the close up action in the impact zone. I am selling my SPL Surfhousing, because I have recently change camera brands and the new Sony brand is not compatible with this housing. This housing has never been flooded, nor have the seal been compromised in any way. All the glass is scratch free and in pristine condition. I still have the Nikon D7000 camera body if you are interested in purchasing as a package. Item that are included. A-Series SPL Watrehousing (Welded Aluminum) Flat Port (wide angle) Neoprene Port Cover Detachable Pistol Grip with Trigger Detachable Side Grip 3/8 nuts Plastic Wingnuts GoPro Mount Silicone Grease SPL Waterhousing Nikon D7000 A-SERIES camera waterhousings are not dive housings, they are splash rated for water action sports only. Although not made for underwater diving photography, they are great water housings for photographing surfing, sailing, kite boarding, bodyboarding, fishing or many other shallow water activities. Construction: Housings are constructed of ultra light weight aluminum. Sheared, formed on a sheet metal press brake then welded solid by a certified welder. All aluminum is hard anodized to protect against salt water corrosion. The water housing is then painted with industrial powder coat paint. Features and Controls: ▪ Aperture ▪ Shutter speed ▪ Manual shutter release ▪ Back focus (by request) ▪ Detachable flash option ▪ Interchangeable Ports ▪ Other controls can be added for an extra cost Depth Rating: ▪ 15-20ft ▪ All housings made by SPL can handle any size surf you have the nuts to swim into. ▪ These are not dive housings and they should not be treated as such. Weight and Dimensions: Weight 3 lbs with fisheye port and pistol grip
  4. I've been reading some posts online recommending that for "on land" shooting, the Hero 7 sharpness be set to "low" for more natural looking footage. I haven't gotten to use mine in the water yet but I'm wondering if settings of "medium" or "high" might yield better results underwater where the overall environment is less sharp than on land due to less that gin-clear visibility. Any recommendations for WB of "auto" or "native" (or some other choice) would be helpful, too. I'd be free diving with the camera a depths of 30ft of less. Thanks!
  5. I get asked this question very often, so here goes, here is my Beginner and Intermediate gear advice. I've been shooting as a pro underwater photographer and videographer for a few years now so hope this helps! Happy shooting! 🤟
  6. Our group dove the Thomas Hume with Double Action Dive Charters last Friday. We are working on collecting video for a presentation about wreck diving on the Great Lakes. This will be presented to our local dive club in a month or two. Along with some prior videos and another dive weekend coming up. Anyway, been shooting stills forever, pretty green with this video stuff, especially underwater. This was all shot with a Panasonic G9, GoPro 5 and a drone I used to have.... Not much drone footage as you will see. My piloting skills from moving objects need work. All that said, I’d love feedback. Good and bad. Still working on stability, white balance, color grading and transitions. G9 housing was positively buoyant and that didn’t help. Dove it without my strobes and that was a mistake from a buoyancy perspective. Taking the video setup to the pool this weekend to get it weighted properly without strobes. https://youtu.be/qbhnfvPMHzs
  7. Hi all, My GoPro Hero5 recently flooded. I had used it underwater only twice in the 19 months I have had it, never abused it, and had all ports shut securely. Both times it was submerged in fresh water only about 3 feet deep, without an additional housing (the Hero5 is supposed to be waterproof to 10m/33ft without a supplemental housing). Because it is out of warranty, GoPro won't replace my camera, but they offered me 40% off a new Hero5 or Hero6. I'm honestly not sure I want to buy another GoPro - one of the features I liked about it was that it was supposed to be waterproof without an additional housing - but I did find that the cam filled a few small niches and am considering replacing it. I have read a number of reviews with other users having the same issue - water gets in the camera even when doors are completely shut and the camera is used at shallow depths - and am wondering if the Hero6 has a better track record in this regard. Can anyone comment on their experience using a GoPro Hero5 or Hero6 underwater (particularly in shallow water without an additional housing)? I don't have a dedicated underwater setup, and am not purchasing a GoPro primarily for underwater use (I like it as a super portable pocket camera that I can use with gloves on in the winter and as a wearable POV cam for some activities), but I like having the option. Thanks in advance!

  10. Went Snorkeling here in San Diego, CA this AM (April 1st). Water temps were very cold, 50-51F. Still there were several turtles around, and some seven gill sharks as well. I don't know how the turtles can stand such cold water. The air temps were warmer but the turtles never seem to leave the water so... Here's a short video of the mornings swim, shot with a GoPro Hero 6 Black - -Roger Uzun
  11. GoPro Hero 4 Black in good condition and good working condition. This GoPro has an awesome skin on it that makes it stylish and unique. I always got compliments on the look of it. -->Can easily be removed. Dive housing shows some light superficial scuffs or scratches - normal wear from use. Housings right button itself has some scratches on its edges. The top button itself has a small amount of scratches on the edge - not effecting performance. Refer to photos - zoom in. GoPro itself only shows signs of normal wear from use - no scratches on the lens and no scratches on the screen - good condition. Refer to photos. Additional photos can be sent upon request. Includes: GoPro Hero 5 Black with instructions ~ $500 MSRP Housing with solid backing and skeleton backing Charger Adhesive mount (hinge not included) Screw and nut Dual battery charger with extra battery. Used - normal wear ~ $50 MSRP Polar Pro Switchblade combo filter - great for macro photography (for use with close up subjects only - red filter for underwater use). This item was only used once. Like new condition without box. ~ $80 MSRP Polar Pro red filter - for underwater use. Takes away blue/green coloring by adding red. This item is used and only shows signs of normal wear. ~ $30 MSRP Total MSRP ~ $650 Micro SD card not included. I recommend at least 16GB. Preferably 32GB. I use 64GB. I also recommend GoPros 3 way pole. I use that on land and underwater. It includes a tripod within the handle. I even use the tripod underwater and use it to film myself carving my pumpkin underwater on Halloween! Bonus items: A float - for optional adhesive mounting to the back of the GoPro. Useful if snorkeling or on a pole being used from a boat (GoPro will not sink if it comes off) Double sided adhesive would suffice for adding it to the back of the GoPro. A red filter for the inside of the GoPro (some divers prefer red filters on the inside. I prefer the outside one because it can easily be removed while in use after surfacing) This GoPro has traveled the world! From diving the Tectonic Plates in Iceland to Diving with Killer Whales in Northern Norway to the Colosseum in Rome and Great White Sharks in South Africa to zip lining in the Amazon Rainforest! I hope that it's next owner continues to take this GoPro around the World! I'm only selling this one because I'm upgrading to the Hero 5. This package is an underwater lovers dream! The GoPro is the best action cam to capture extreme adventure. My Hero 2 was even inside a great whites mouth and came out without a scratch. What an awesome video that was! Use this GoPro for all your wild adventures and tell your story! US Seller Priority shipping to the states (No international shipping) Selling price $345 Shipping $5 Don't forget to download the GoPro app on your phone. You can even use your phone as a remote with it! And Go onto GoPros website and download GoPro studio for easy to use step by step video editing and/or GoPro's Quik for even faster editing.

  13. The GoPro HERO5 Black and Session cameras have been announced for release on 2nd October. http://shop.gopro.com/International/cameras Waterproof but only to 10m, so you'll still need a housing for most diving Still only 4k 30p max, same as the HERO4, which is a little disappointing as I was dreaming of 60p @ 4k Electronic Image Stablization (EIS) but limited to 1080p as it's stabilized and cropped in software, not hardware More bells and whistles such as voice control and integration with their new Karma drone So really there's nothing significantly new for the underwater shooter who wants to shoot 4k. Unless I've missed something? Might still get one for trekking etc. and for some underwater wide angle when shooting macro.
  14. I've been using my 5DmkIII in a Nauticam housing with external monitor mounted to a scooter to shoot video, but would like to reduce the size and complexity. I've determined a Hero3 will give me sufficient quality if enough light is available, and I use two Bigblue 30,000 lumen lights in dark water. AFAIK, the DeepPro is the only GoPro housing supporting bulkheads for HDMI port (or leak sensor, etc). If you have a DeepPro or similar dedicated video setup that has or supports an HDMI bulkhead for external monitor, let me know!

  20. They only have 60 degrees of coverage, but I am wondering if anyone has purchased a set and used with a gopro or some other camera underwater. It appears they sell gel diffusers as well, so I'm look at them strictly for compactness / convenience / price http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=1192935&gclid=CL6Ek8767s0CFUpZhgodMj8Jxg&Q=&ap=y&m=Y&c3api=1876%2C92051677682%2C&is=REG&A=details Any thoughts/comments would be greatly appreciated!
