  3. Im looking for advice of recommended white balance strategies for filming using video lights. Im primarily a photographer so have a good grasp of the theory there but obviously video is different (less light, no RAW etc). I currently have a V6K (12000 lumen) single video light and primarily testing wide angle subjects, diving in the tropics. What is the best option for getting a sensible white balance with this type of setup? I did experiment setting the colour temperature of my lights as a white balance but havent found the results there great - far too green and washed out. Is this simply because the light isnt powerful enough ? Im getting far better results on auto and the deeper i go, the better it is (i guess due to less ambient light getting in the way, again, is this just a lack of power)? Is there any merit in trying to take a manual white balance via a grey card or slate with the light on and using that? Last time i tried that i had some very odd colour shift and results so maybe its my technique? Im aware for wide angle i really need 2 lights for coverage and 12,000 isn't overly powerful which wont help but basically im looking for advice on the right technique to get a decent white balance on the video.
  4. I have always been under the impression that constant lights (video) do not appeal to sharks but I may be wrong and I was looking for any research on the subject I am quite positive that strobes are almost invisible to sharks that are almost blind as I have never seen a reaction but for video lights I have always find marine life to react in some ways and therefore always excluded sharks and video lights as a combination Recently though I have seen some some footage of sharks shot with video lights so I am particularly curious about it Has anyone any evidence empirical or scientific to understand more about this?

  12. Hi everyone, I’m currently looking for two Keldan 4x or Keldan 8x lights. I would prefer a seller within Europe (due to customs duty) since I’m located in Austria. So, if you have a pair to sell, please let me know! Cheers Paul
  13. I'll be going to Kona in a couple weeks and want to record the manta dive I'll be doing. It's a night dive but somewhat well illuminated due to many divers and snorkelers in the water shining lights on the mantas. Because of this I'm a bit unsure on the use of filters or video lights. Do I use a red filter, and do I use video lights? Anyone have experience on what will give the best results?
  14. Hi all, Fantastic deal is here. 15. Keldan Video Lights in Excellent Condition They just over 2 years old and now have less than 20 dives on them. I recently used them on 6 dives in Indonesia for a Manta Video (last week) and now will no longer need them as they will not get used until late next year. So rather than storing them I am posting them here. The original batteries are still in excellent condition and hold a full charge so you still get the 55min- 2.5hr burn time. These are the modular version so you are able to update the video heads as Keldan releases new technology. Cost $4200 + new Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. You can check the specs with Backscatter where they were originally purchased. Package comes with: Asking $2095 USD for - 2X Keldan Luna 8 Lights - 2X Keldan Luna 8 Batteries (Original Batteries) - 2X Keldan Luna 8 Ball Clamps - 2X Keldan Luna 8 Chargers ---- If you are interested in two spare batteries (bought one month ago and have been charged once) for a total of 4 batteries Package above (+) $700 USD = $2795 - 2X Keldan Luna 8 Batteries (used once - basically brand new - Paid $880 a month ago) ----- I have sold other items on Wetpixel here like an aquatic 5DMKIII housing and Flouro Diving Kit I will accept Paypal Only. ----
  16. Hey everyone, I'm going on a week long live aboard trip in a week. I have a camera/housing, but no lights yet. Is there anywhere I can rent video lights (higher lumen, as I am shooting primarily wide angle)? They would need to be shipped because I live in Jacksonville or if I can pick up near the Orlando airport, that would work as well. Thanks in advance!
  17. So I'm looking to purchase some high power video lights for filming underwater but wanted to get feedback from people that may have used these in the field. or just any advice in general on this subject. I am fairly new to the lighting world underwater, and I have checkout many brands and there are a lot of options. My first thought was going with Light and Motion and get two Sola 2100 lights they run about $600 a pop have a spot and flood feature (which coming from the commercial and film world I like that option) and they are small. But as I shopped around I started noticing there are much brighter lights that pack more of a punch and I would rather spend the money now and get a light that offers more lumens than I can use for many application. Give or take 1600 lumens is roughly equivalent to a 100w incandescent bulb in terms of light output. I would want a light bright enough to give me some fill on even say a shark in mid day to bring back color and depending on your settings you can play around with your background a little more in terms of exposure. But the big question based on my experience with my Nikonos SB105 strobes and a small 600 lumen video light ( which didnt light anything during the day) Is there a Led video light that can provide roughly the same amount as a basic flash during the day like the Nikonos SB105. I looked at the following units. -Sola 4000 it gives 4000 lumens blue light, has3 output options and 80 degree beam and the battery last for 50mins at high out but for 2 its is a crazy $3000 dollars -I torch Video Pro 7 offer 5000 lumens 120 degree angel beam, last 1 hour at full output, has 5 output modes and has 2 levels of red light which im not sure what that is for. cost $800 each -Fisheye Fix led Aquavolt 5000 which is 5000 Lumens, 120 degree beam, dims, last 75min high power cost $1200 each but is now dis continued Long story short I am not sure where to look or start now, and I have read that even though it says it offer 4000 or 5000 lumens sometimes they are less. So let the chat begin what lights do you guys use? why have they worked best for you? Thanks for all the help and feedback in advance I am excited to learn some new stuff about lighting.
  18. I am including a set of flip up/down (optional but included) fluorescence filters for those that want to give that variety of diving a try. There is a slight variation to the 2 filters and change be accomplished, underwater quickly for variety if desired. Also included is a warming filter. VL-5800P Li ion Rechargeable Battery High Power LED Video Light The Bigblue VL-5800P LED Aluminum Video Light System delivers a stunning 5,800 lumens light output through 10 pieces of XML LED, and an 120 degree perfectly even light spot. The 6500K white light reflects the true vibrant colors of the surrounding while diving. The light built-in 6 pieces Red LED to enhance focusing performance. 4 levels of brightness, Red color and SOS controlled by a reliable push button with battery indicator. The 18650 rechargeable Li-ion battery pack comes with a smart charger enabling you to charge the battery in a few hours. The 4 steps power adjustment lets you choose between four output levels - IV at 100%, III at 50% , III at 25% or I at 10% extending the burn time and reducing reflections at close range. Replaceable 18650 Li ion rechargeable battery pack. VL-5800P ( come with ball joint and plate with glove for handheld purpose) Presently, I have their YS attachment(optional) connected and included. The ball mounts have never been removed from bag. I am selling 2 separate set ups. I am including caps to protect lens during travel. Both in very good condition with original packaging. $265 each Thank you for your consideration.
  19. Recently purchased these off this forum and unfortunately they were misrepresented as I believed them to be the newest CRI model. If I shot mostly warm water the Flux would be just fine and would do an excellent job filling out the shadows. They 2.5 years old and now have 6 dives on them. I did a check on the batteries and they are still in excellent condition and the lights are in excellent condition too. I paid $2400 USD + $100 shipping for the lights two weeks ago and would be looking to get $2175 for these lights as I would prefer the CRI model for cold water. You can generally pick up a pair of these new or used for around $1350 - $1600 each. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I have validated all the specs with Backscatter where they were originally purchased. Looking for a quicker sale as I am heading on an extended trip on Alaska coast at the end of month and would like to get CRI versions for that trip. I will accept Paypal Only. Package comes with: - 2X Keldan Luna 8 Lights - 2X Keldan Luna 8 Batteries - 2X Keldan Luna 8 Ball Clamps - 2X Keldan Luna 8 Chargers I took them for a test dive and you can find the cold water footage here. The wide angle shots are these lights with auto white balance so they do render a very beautiful even beam and colour. The close up of the shrimp is focus light only and a test shot only. -
  20. I have two Sola 1200 video lights for sale. In excellent condition, with ULCS ball mounts. They work perfectly. 3 power settings in both wide and spot mode. 21. Light and Motion Stingray Plus Camera and housing, plus 2 that's right, 2 Sony HDR XR-200 cameras, Light and Motion all aluminum housing, arms and lights, to include 4 fish eye lights (2 1000lm and 2 500lm) 3 additional replacement handles, 4 o-ring kits, 2 sets of handle batteries, 2 chargers with extended battery, battery is good for 4 dives, carrying suitcase with dividers, optional go pro or utility top mount (quick connect) and all manuals. Used less than 100 dives. Asking $800 for all included obo, plus shipping. I live in a VA if interested in pick up. I accept all major credit cards as well. I'm looking at upgrading but otherwise an awesome camera set up. All you see here is included, suitcase is a great way to customize, it's light and secure. I can send sample video upon request and can be reached at dbuky1@gmail.com if you prefer. Great for the diver that wants to get into videography with all manual control capabilities. $3500 plus invested in to this whole set up, but I need to get rid as I want to upgrade to a much much larger system. HDR storage is 250 gig! I spent 3 weeks in Micronesia and didn't even fill the driver. Sony compresses the files well and allows for mass storage. There is also the option to add a memory card for additional storage. Great housing with only one port to seal. It is double sealed O rings and leaves the worry of flooding on the surface. All aluminum housing and infared controls make for ease of operation. Built in flip down red filter and you're in business. Please let me know if you have any questions, all serious offers will be considered. Thanks
  22. Hi there, I purchased this Sidewinder 360 Package a few years ago and only used it a couple of times. I took a look at it today and I realized that the scratch guard on the glass for the panning camera has never been removed! I upgraded the monitor and the umbilical in my package when I purchased it so it comes with the full 300' of umbilical and a 10.4" LCD "photo frame" monitor. The battery has lost it's charge in the past few years but the charger is fine and you can pick up a new 12V SLA battery for ~$20 online. It also can be sued with the included "cigarette lighter" adapters so the battery isn't really necessary. The case is a heavy duty roller Pelican and is airtight with a relief valve, waterproof, floats, and has four handles including an extendable handle when you want to roll it behind you. The camera itself is awesome and you can toggle between bottom-looking and panning whenever you wish. Both camera's have their own LED lights, the panning camera has more but both are really powerful. If you want to investigate what is on the bottom or swimming over it before you get wet this is the system for you! I paid $2099 US, I'm asking $1250 plus shipping costs but I will take any reasonable offer. Thanks for looking and here is what SeaViewDiving has to say about the non-upgraded Sidewinder 360 Explorer Pack, the upgrades were custom requests direct from SplashCam at the time: The Explorer Package is a complete underwater viewing system, which includes a 7 inch LCD monitor, rechargeable battery and a Pelican case. Camera Head Camera Control Unit 100, 200 & 290 ft. Umbilical Cable Cigarette Lighter Power Adapter AC/DC Power Adapter 6ft Male to Male Video Patch Cable Drift Stabilizer Fin Cable Clamp 7" Color LCD Monitor w/ Sunshade 12V 7.5AH Rechargeable Battery w/ Charger Pelican Brand Case
  23. I'm not getting on very well using arms with clamps for video. They drive me a bit mad. So I'm considering "bendy arm" solutions again. I've used Locline arms in the past but it creaked so loudly, disturbing both marine life and my fellow divers. I've also made DIY light arms out of plastic Gorillapod, but all the joints gradually went floppy. Has anyone used strong, chunky Locline that doesn't creak or flop? If so, exactly what was the spec and where did you get it? Any other clever solutions for bendy light arms? (I'm using Keldan Luna 4X now but might change to something smaller and lighter for macro)
  24. Selling my two Aquavolt 7000 lights because I need canister-style lights, instead. I'm the original owner and purchased these new about a year ago. I've used them on about 20 dives and kept the batteries well-maintained. Each light comes with all original parts: case, manual, battery, charger, etc. There are some light scratches around the edges, which are pretty hard to avoid when you have to hand your camera to someone as you climb back aboard a busy boat, but overall they're in excellent condition. I've had no problems with them at all. They retail for $1999. I'm selling for $1500 each or $2800 for both, plus shipping. Here are two examples of me using them for macro and wide angle in dark water.
  25. I mentioned in an earlier thread that I had been experimenting with some video light filters with the objective of finding a better balance between underwater ambient light and the broader (red) spectrum of artificial video lights. Here is the problem, obvious in the screenshot below: the area covered by the video light has a lot of warm colour (reds and yellows) but the background is all greenish-blue. Colour-correcting this scene is either a compromise or a complex exercise of selective secondary colour-corrections. I think that I've found a cheap DIY system that can solve this problem and can be tuned to most underwater ambient light circumstances. The main component is a 4x4 filter holder made by Lee Filters. It's all plastic and rubber so nothing to rust. $20USD each at BH Photo: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/162544-REG/LEE_Filters_GS_Gel_Snap_4x4_Filter.html Here is the holder with an aqua filter (the same filter that I used in the shot further below) The slip-on rubber-band mounting system enables it to fit on most underwater video lights. I use them on a pair of iTorch 7s but they also fit the Keldan Luma4s. Here is folder mounted on the iTorch7. It can be "wriggled on" easy enough and will not easily fall off - although I do take them off when getting into and out of the water so that they don't get bumped off. The filters are pieces of plastic that I cut from document folders that I bought in stationery shops. I wandered around a few shops until I had found a mix of light blue, dark blue, aqua (green-blue) etc. The firmer document folder covers work best. I also cut some uncoloured plastic squares that are a neutral colour but make a nice diffuser for softer macro lighting for night dives. You can take a few different shades of the colour filters on each dive but I find that I can usually judge from the surface what I will need. The technique is simply to look at the colour of the water and select a filter that is the closest match. If the water looks tropical blue, use a blue filter; if it looks greenish, use an aqua coloured filter. So, here is the result. This is the same scene as above, shot with the aqua filter on both lights then quickly colour-corrected in FCPX to reduce the green and boost the reds. To my eyes, this image is very close to what it looked like underwater last week in Lembeh. (the coconut octopus inside the drink bottle is guarding eggs and in the last few days of her life). I have also used the same system in the deep blue waters of North Komodo, where a light blue filter worked best. So for $40, some time wandering around stationery shops and a little bit of scissor work, you can make a video light filter system that will enable you to balance ambient and artificial light in most situations. Regards Peter
