Hello everyone, Looking for a new focus light and wondering what is recommended or what is new out in the market. I'm mainly looking for yellow or white and red light, as well as the feature where the focus light shuts off temporarily upon strobe triggering. After I changed my strobes (now using Retra Pro), my current focus light is hit or miss when the strobes fire off. Thanks in advance!

I received my SeaFrogs SF-02 light today. It appears functional; i.e., it come on and goes through the colored lights and back to white. However, I have a few questions and the manual doesn't provide much input. 1. When I turn the dial the number in the right window changes from 1 to 9 but the light intensity stays the same. Isn't it supposed to change from dim to brighter? 2. It is very unclear to me what I am supposed to do with respect to Setting 1/2/3 and how I know what setting mode I am in. Does anyone have a clearer description of this lights operation and modes than the manual provides? Thanks for your help, Rick

I mentioned in an earlier thread that I had been experimenting with some video light filters with the objective of finding a better balance between underwater ambient light and the broader (red) spectrum of artificial video lights. Here is the problem, obvious in the screenshot below: the area covered by the video light has a lot of warm colour (reds and yellows) but the background is all greenish-blue. Colour-correcting this scene is either a compromise or a complex exercise of selective secondary colour-corrections. I think that I've found a cheap DIY system that can solve this problem and can be tuned to most underwater ambient light circumstances. The main component is a 4x4 filter holder made by Lee Filters. It's all plastic and rubber so nothing to rust. $20USD each at BH Photo: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/162544-REG/LEE_Filters_GS_Gel_Snap_4x4_Filter.html Here is the holder with an aqua filter (the same filter that I used in the shot further below) The slip-on rubber-band mounting system enables it to fit on most underwater video lights. I use them on a pair of iTorch 7s but they also fit the Keldan Luma4s. Here is folder mounted on the iTorch7. It can be "wriggled on" easy enough and will not easily fall off - although I do take them off when getting into and out of the water so that they don't get bumped off. The filters are pieces of plastic that I cut from document folders that I bought in stationery shops. I wandered around a few shops until I had found a mix of light blue, dark blue, aqua (green-blue) etc. The firmer document folder covers work best. I also cut some uncoloured plastic squares that are a neutral colour but make a nice diffuser for softer macro lighting for night dives. You can take a few different shades of the colour filters on each dive but I find that I can usually judge from the surface what I will need. The technique is simply to look at the colour of the water and select a filter that is the closest match. If the water looks tropical blue, use a blue filter; if it looks greenish, use an aqua coloured filter. So, here is the result. This is the same scene as above, shot with the aqua filter on both lights then quickly colour-corrected in FCPX to reduce the green and boost the reds. To my eyes, this image is very close to what it looked like underwater last week in Lembeh. (the coconut octopus inside the drink bottle is guarding eggs and in the last few days of her life). I have also used the same system in the deep blue waters of North Komodo, where a light blue filter worked best. So for $40, some time wandering around stationery shops and a little bit of scissor work, you can make a video light filter system that will enable you to balance ambient and artificial light in most situations. Regards Peter

Im looking for advice of recommended white balance strategies for filming using video lights. Im primarily a photographer so have a good grasp of the theory there but obviously video is different (less light, no RAW etc). I currently have a V6K (12000 lumen) single video light and primarily testing wide angle subjects, diving in the tropics. What is the best option for getting a sensible white balance with this type of setup? I did experiment setting the colour temperature of my lights as a white balance but havent found the results there great - far too green and washed out. Is this simply because the light isnt powerful enough ? Im getting far better results on auto and the deeper i go, the better it is (i guess due to less ambient light getting in the way, again, is this just a lack of power)? Is there any merit in trying to take a manual white balance via a grey card or slate with the light on and using that? Last time i tried that i had some very odd colour shift and results so maybe its my technique? Im aware for wide angle i really need 2 lights for coverage and 12,000 isn't overly powerful which wont help but basically im looking for advice on the right technique to get a decent white balance on the video.

I have always been under the impression that constant lights (video) do not appeal to sharks but I may be wrong and I was looking for any research on the subject I am quite positive that strobes are almost invisible to sharks that are almost blind as I have never seen a reaction but for video lights I have always find marine life to react in some ways and therefore always excluded sharks and video lights as a combination Recently though I have seen some some footage of sharks shot with video lights so I am particularly curious about it Has anyone any evidence empirical or scientific to understand more about this?
