  1. Hi Folks. I was fortunate enough to place third in Intermediate Traditional Macro in this year's Monterey Shootout, and my prize was a brand new in box Ikelite DS161 strobe + battery. Unfortunately, I am not an Ikelite shooter. However, I do want to parlay my winnings into replacing my very very temperamental Sea & Sea YS-D2s (non J). To be clear this is the strobe head + 1 battery together in the box. I will happily part with the strobe+battery for $900 USD shipped to the continental US. I can do PayPal or Venmo. I know I don't have a ton of posts (mostly a lurker) so for vetting purposes my info: My ebay user ID is automaton3. My website is www.drewwilsonphotography.com My Facebook account is http://www.facebook.com/drew.wilson.7798 Please let me know if you have any questions!
  2. Recently I have been diving while using Sea & Sea YS-D2 strobe. After 2 weeks of using the strobe it stopped firing (never flooded the strobe and used enelopes fully charged batteries, btw, I always shoot in manual). The constant light was still functional but the strobe flash just stopped firing. This was on Grand Cayman and my only option was to purchase a display model from Cathy Church shop in Georgetown. The new strobe survived another 3 weeks of photographing but I noticed that the recycle time of it started to increase. Other problem I found on both strobes was that when firing the strobe consecutively 10-15 times the strobe would stop firing and would need to recycle for about 10-15 seconds after which time it would start firing again. This happened on both strobes. Spoke with Sea & Sea today and their tech told me that that was not normal. Anyone had a similar experience? These strobes are $700 a piece and I am afraid they will not last me long time. How do these compare to Inon strobes?
  3. hello! here for sale this YS-D2 used (about 10 dives) with some mark on the body but works perfectly. i am selling because I have now an ikelite ds161 with electrical connetion. original box, diffusers and silicone grease included 450€
  4. Hi, It seems that the enthusiasm for a better/cheaper snoot never runs out. I usually find it hard to point the beam of light on the subject, and even a slow moving one escapes by the time I get it. So I wanted a light guide that will show were snoot actually points to. I tried the 10Bar laser focus and found it unreliable and inaccurate. I did design a version where the laser projected on the same line as the strobe using beam splitter. But the laser was annoying. Then I realized that the same design can work with a strong focus torch. The benefit is that I get to see the whole beam and that it is much brighter than the little red laser dot. Here is the result. It is a modular snoot that can either have a fixed head (at different beam diameters) or a fiber-optic attachment that can be manipulated by hand. An example of a photo made with this snoot. I had 12-50mm (Olympus EM-1) + wet diopter lens (nauticam CMC2). The focus light was on red, and my dive buddy was aiming the optic fiber snoot at individual skeleton shrimps.... Would love to hear your comments and suggestions. The design is uploaded to https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3749151

  6. Hello, does anyone have experience in building a own snoot with water tubes etc.? I tried to build one and also attached a laser pointer to see where to aim. But I have a problem to connect the plastic tubes with my strobes... Underwater it was falling off very often. Any tip or idea would be helpful! Thanks a lot :-)

  10. Looking for a single Inon Z-240 Type 4 that is in good condition. Send me a PM if you have one you're willing to part with for a price that is fair. I recently noticed that one of mine has a much lower output than the other while shooting a large ball of Jacks. Initially I though one of the two flash tubes might be dead but later I confirmed that is not the case by taking photos of the strobe in set to a low power with my lens stopped all the way down. Not sure what is going on with it because it still works fine but the output is significantly lower than my other Inon Z-240, I am fairly sure this wasn't previously the case as I never noticed it.

  12. Hello, I have just switched to a DSLR system, my setup is a D800E in Nautical Housing with 2 strobe INON S2000 activated by the in-build flash with finer optic cable. I would like to know from someone with similar setup what would be the sync speed I can push the system, has anyone tested at 1/250, 1/320 or above? Second I was wandering if I-TTL mode would work as well as flash exposure compensation, somehow I feel it would be easier to adjust rather than using the small knob of thee strobe. I will be shooting Macro with 105 Micro VR, in your experience is recharging time really bothering in this setup? What alternatives do I have to fire my strobes, and what are the gain ? thank you for your suggestions.
  13. Hoping someone is willing to part with with their Sea and Sea YS 250's. Please let me know. Email is better, I don't get on here often. ralphpace@gmail.com Thanks.
  14. Hello, I am looking into getting into underwater photography. Been doing a lot of research in setting up a rig, decided to go with the RX 100 V for a starter camera. I didn't want to take my D500 underwater without the higher priced housing, and the RX seems more versatile. My main question is about the strobe feature on the Kraken Hydra 3500S+. I was hoping to get some comparison to a strobe like the YS-D2J. I'd imagine the Kraken wouldn't have nearly the features as the YS-D2J but wasn't sure of the differences since I can't find much out about the strobe feature for the kraken. I'd like to get some high quality photos so I would like some good strobes, but figured if I could get a dual purpose light for video or strobe that would be a cheaper starting option. But I'd like to know how well that flash works before I go for that setup. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Kraken Hydra 3500S+ WSRU
  15. Hello, does anyone have experience in combining Inon Z-240 and D-200? Is there a even light or ist there a big difference between the two light sources (if you shoot for example a huge animal like a shark on sandy bottom)? Thanks a lot! Michael
  16. Reading through the forum I found two approach how to avoid backscatter in murky water for WA: extending arms to increase camera-strobe-distance using fairly short arms but pointing the strobes outwards to just feather the object with the edge of the light beam I am still early in my underwater photography journey so I am interested in: What is the preferred method? Is there - besides the setup- any significant difference in the results? I would assume that using long arms is most effective, but if there is no difference I would prefer the more compact setup

  19. I was curious to determine just how much more powerful strobes are than video lights, so I put together a little test where I shot my Sea & Sea YS-D2 and Gates GT14 light side by side and tried to match the resulting exposure with each of them at full power. Setup: Shot in a cave to reduce ambient light impact using a Panasonic GH5 with Canon 8-15mm fisheye at 6mm using a Viltrox 0.71x speedbooster for the widest possible field of view in order to demonstrate the shape of the resulting beam from each light. The target wall was about 1m away from the camera. For the YS-D2, I removed the diffuser to judge the strobe's full power. As you'll see below, this produced a slightly narrower beam spread with a more pronounced hotspot than the GT14 achieved. There is also a notable color temperature difference (as the specs predict) with the GT14 being about 300k warmer than the YS-D2. Here are the resulting exposures to illustrate the beam spread and the power: Left GT14 at F2.8, 1/250, ISO 200; Right YS-D2 at F16, 1/250, ISO 100; Conclusion The unmodified YS-D2 strobe at full power is somewhere between 5 and 6 stops brighter than the Gates GT14. Let's say it outputs about five stops more light (i.e. it is 32 times brighter) once you account for the fact that the light is concentrated into a slightly narrower cone. So if you wanted a video light that matches the light output of the YS-D2, you'd need a 448,000 lumen light. Imagine -- two video lights putting out 1 million lumens. I'd say we're a little ways away from completely replacing strobes with video lights for photography
