Surf photos

Recommended Posts

I've been shooting alot of surfing pics and now I'm venturing into the water to get up close for the cool shots. Shooting a Canon 5D in Ike housing (arriving any moment...I hope) with 17-40mm f4L . Does this sound like a good combo?

Thanks!

Hi Tom,

I am no Canon user, but this surely seems like a great combination. Did Ikelite started shipping 5D housings? That's great news! Post some photos and a review when you can!

Luiz

P.S.: I moved your post to the dSLR area where I think you will get more feedback.

No, I don't think Ikelite is shipping 5D housings yet. Realistically I do not expect them to start showing up until December.

Tom, I would highly recommend you cancel your Ikelite order and order a housing that is designed for surfing.

Ikelite housings are designed for scuba diving which is very different than surfing. Ikelite and other scuba housings are designed to work in high pressure environment. The high water pressure holds the seals even tighter and become more secure in deeper water. In shallow water they are much more susceptible to flooding. Especially when there are big waves trying to pull the housing apart.

Also, you are going to need to find a website that specializes in surf photography if you want good help. This site has many people very experience in scuba photography but no-one doing surf photography. They are very different and we will not be able to help you very much.

Thanks for the advice so far. I am planning on shooting UW with the 5D...I was just trying to get away with using the same equipment for in the surf. Maybe just a UW bag for the surf?

Hey Tom,

I too am just getting into the surf pics. I have a lesser model (XTI) but am trying to figure out what is the best deal and cheapest for both. I am not willing to sacrifice quality to save a few bucks but am interested in what you have decided. Did you find a bag type or have you decided yet. Let me know if you will. Thanks,

Daniel

Damiel, welcome to surf photography, I'm clueless about most of the diving questions on this board, but I may be able to help you. If surfing is the only thing you'll be shooting in the water I would recomend staying away from dive housings, they are usually a lot more expensive and offer several fetures that are not very usefull in the surf. The main drawback to dive housings are the weight and the shutter button, they get heavier because they will withstand much deaper water, and on some the shutter can be hard to get to in a hurry. IkeLite housings are pretty good and pretty inexpensive for what you get, the drawback is they don't make lens ports for some of the prime lenses for shooting surf, and the ports can be blown off if hit by a wave. That's not a really comon problem but in heavy surf I've seen it happen, it will ruin your day pretty quick.

Personaly my favorite housing on the market is the Aquatech, but they don't currently, nor are they likely to start, making housings for the Rebel. SPL is my next favorite, however their housings aren't quite as ergonomic and their ports aren't as interchangeable between housings, so if you were to upgrade to a 1D you would have to buy all new ports, but they are high quality and a housing with a port sells for about $1500 so they are a reasonably inexpensive option.

Another option to look at is used housings for film cameras, I wanted to get back into film (Fuji Velvia is amazing in the water) so I purchased a used EOS 3 body, Aquatech housing, WA port and a 70-200 port, a case of film and a 28mm f/2.8 lens for $1000. If you can find a similar deal it gives you a great set-up that you can use and if you get really into it and start making monney from your work, you can just sell the set-up (probably at a profit) and upgrade to a new digital rig. I did get a great deal, but similar deals are out there if you spend some time looking
