Seeking opinions on UK Germany Housings

Recommended Posts

I've just acquired 2 Canon 5D cameras and am now shopping housings.

If price were no object I can see that Subal rates pretty well.... but alas, I shot my wad on the Cameras and both a 100mm USM macro and 14mm 2.8L wide angle.

Can't get momma to blow the dough on TWO Subals :)

So, I'm looking at the Ikelite and UK Germany housings... Any opinions on the UK housing would be appreciated. I also see that they have a ringflash port for macro and was wondering if anyone has any opinion about this as well.

The UK Germany housings are very compact and well made. They don't have an optional magnified finder, and they are had to get parts for or get serviced if you live in the USofA. I owned one that I bought from Eric but sold it in favor of a different setup. I also don't think they offer an 8" dome port, but I could be wrong.

Cheers

The big UK dome glass has the same size you could find with Subal and Sealux, made of glass (no acryl). My criticism is rather that UK doesn't offer any sunshade at all! Without one, I would have got scratches on my dome for sure.

If you intend to use two strobes, I would think about mounting options too. As far as I know, UK delivers the housing with one naked hand grip (no T plate or ball). One T plate is located on top of the housing (in the middle) and another one at the left side. Not exactly the best symmetric way.

When the 5D has been announced, I talked to UK about the famous * button ergonomics and that it would be appreciated if the button would be accessible without moving the right hand away from the grip. He assured that and as far as I can see from the housing pics, there is a dedicated lever for the * button. But in the meantime, Sealux announced a 5D housing too so I don’t have to switch brand and ports.
