Alex_Mustard 0 Posted November 28, 2005 To continue the theme of self promotion, which afterall is what this section is about this image is being run by DIVE Magazine in their Big Shot (yes, that is the correct spelling) feature in the current issue: DIVE contacted me about this in early October and I directed them to this Bali Gallery, mainly taken in September: http://www.amustard.com/bali/ to see if there was anything they thought suitable. They went with this shot, which initially surprised me, but actually now it is printed I am pleased with what it looks like, and it does make for a very colourful double page spread. But if it was my choice I would not have gone for this image. They wanted a change after Steve Jones's whaleshark in the previous issue. I think I would have gone for the orange seahorse face or the yellow frogfish face. Or maybe one of the octopuses. It is often hard to judge shots from your own images, especially only a few days after shooting them. Do others find this a surprising choice or not? One thing I noticed was that the image that you posted here is much more saturated than the one in the site. I can clearly see the difference in the sponge, in my monitor, it looks redish/orange here and brownish/yellow in the site. Did they make the modification themselves or did you submit a printer-optimized version? Another question, what lens did you use for this shot? It is a great shot. My feeling is that the one I submitted was more saturated than the web gallery one, but I think that they have also up the saturation a bit, presumably to go with the Neon title? I don't have the original submission file, must have deleted it, so I can't be sure. It looks like it could have been shot on Velvia, except it is too sharp! MikeVeitch 0 Posted November 28, 2005 its a good shot, i like it and congrats on that, good exposure for you. However, i think it is a strange choice for a double spread, the reasoning is that the subject is bang in the middle and therefore gets split by the seam in the page. Usually two page spreads have an off centre subject in order to fit everything in. Oh well, i wouldn't be complaining that is for sure! Congrats Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
randapex 0 Posted November 29, 2005 Congrats Alex. That shot caught my eye in your gallery before. But maybe more so because it's the super macro stuff I like anyway. The shot is flush with color so it really catches the eye. As Mike mentioned, having part of the photo pinched in the middle of the mag is a bit distracting. But I've got experience carefully removing the staples so it will hang fairly flat on the wall.
