Nikon 105 lense

Recommended Posts

I was looking for another lense, since I have the Nikon 60macro would the 105 be another choice? Seems like more people use the 60. I also need a wide angle was thinking of Nikons 12-24mm over the 10.5. Any thoughts?

My favorite lenses are the 105 and the 10.5, but they are more difficult to use than the 60 and the 12-24. The 105 is better for real macro than the 60 because it gives you more distance from the subject, but it is slower to focus. The 10.5 has a coverage wider than the 12-24, but it is harder to use because the coverage is so wide that you will have unintended stuff into your photos.

Hi MPC

I use both the 12-24 and 10.5; and the 60mm and have a 105 on the way.

The 12-24 is, for me at least, a terrific lens and I have got some excellent results with it. As Luiz says, it is much easier to use than the 10.5 and more flexible.

However the 10.5 can produce awesome results if used well. I found it quite a "challenge" to start with but am now starting to get results that I really like - and I can see that it will not be long before I join the ranks of 10.5 lovers.

If you are only going to buy one WA for the moment, I'd suggest you go with the 12-24 - especially if you want a topside lens too. It is just more flexible and practical. I'm not sure I have got very many 10.5 topside quality shots to enjoy.....

Have all the lenses mentioned and still being new to the hobby I would suggest getting the 12-24. Then it depends on what you find you do more of, Macro or WA. Then you can't go wrong w/the 105 or the 10.5.

I am using all the lenses mentioned here and I confirm all the statements made in this thread.

Depending on your equipment, you should take into account that you need a large good quality domeport for the fisheye. This might be expensive...

For sure the 12-24 is more flexible und I suggest to get this first.

The 10,5 is a wonderful lense, but very special.

It is also a question of the visibility at your mostly visited divesites. If it is very good, maybe the WA are worth it.

The 105 has a slow AF but is "more" suitable for macro.

Maybe you should try the 60 with a converter first. The AF will be slower as well, and on top you loose 1-2 f-stops. But it is a cheaper solution and the converter will be excellant for super-macro once you upgrade to the 105 in the future.

I agree too! The 12-24mm is the best beginners wide angle, but also the lens I use the least. Once you have learned to use the 10.5mm you will find it is the only way to shoot wide! I use mine for everything!

For macro I prefer the 105mm to the 60mm, except when muck diving, where I find the slow moving, easy to approach critters are more suited to the 60mm.

I am also a big fan of mid range zooms and use 17-35mm and 28-70mm regularly.

I dashed out of Jakarta airport on Friday, taxi'd across to the FedEx warehouse, grabbed my 105mm FedEx parcel shipped from Seaoptics (thanks Carey), jumped back in the cab - and hurtled back into the airport to catch my flight to Manado. Arrived in Manado to find my dive gear hadn't. Arrived that is. Still that's why you carry your camera and housing right? And gear can be rented.

5 dives and about 500 photos later, I'm now a firm 105mm fan. WOWEEE! The thing is awesome. :D
