Diver Dennis 0 Posted February 3, 2006 I have a Rebel XT and I'm using a Canon 10-22m WA as well as a Canon 100mm for macro. I'm looking for something in the middle. Have any of you used this lens and if so, what do you think of it? I have an Ike housing with dual DS-125s. Does IS make a difference U/W? Would you choose a differnt lens? Thanks, Dennis. dmoss 0 Posted February 3, 2006 Hello Dennis, I think you would like the 17-85. I use it with +4 diopter and special Ike port and it does a good job for fish portraits, etc. As far as the IS, my shutter speeds are generally high enough under water that I don't have to worry about camera shake, but it's still nice to have. The 17-85 is a good all around topside lens and I have found the IS handy for surface pics. It stayed on my camera topside until I sprang for the 24-70L. Hope this helps. dhaas 33 Posted February 3, 2006 Dennnis, The 17-85mm IS lens is the main one on one of Rebel XT bodies all the time. IS is useful for non-moving subjects in dim light above water, but not needed (or desired) underwater. Turn it off for use UW as it also sucks some battery power. As David Moss says, this is a versatile lens underwter with their "special" Ikelite dome port which needs no zoom clamp / sleeve. This is because teh zoom ring on the 17-85mm IS is out towards the front of the lens. With a good quality +4 diopter (B&W from B&H Photo in NY) you canget some really nice shots from medium wide to reasonable size critters. Check out some samples under my name at www.ikelite.com. Linnked to the Rebel XT test photos. Go for it! dhaas
