Canon 20D Macro Lens

Recommended Posts

I am looking to add a macro lense for my 20D for an upcoming trip. Have been using the 10-22 wide angle to this point and love it. I am trying to decide if I should go with the 100mm or the 60mm in my Aquatica housing. Any feed back would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

They are both great lenses. Get both if you can - you wont be disappointed. If you were only getting one however I would recomend the 60mm as it is more versatile.

I'll second Andre's recommendation on the 60. Seems to be more versatile for macro and fish portraits. The 100 is very sharp for small subjects if you have good light. It tends to hunt for focus in low light conditions. The 60 works extremely well for night dives.

I have the 60mm EF-S (with a 350D) and agree that it is an excellent lense. I don't regret the purchase in the slightest.

I am now considering the purchase of the 100 or sigma 105, because I do a lot of macro and in order to get 1:1, you need to be extremely close to the subject with the 60mm and they often get scared away.

I am not sure how much better the 100mm lenses would be, but would be interested in any opinions if people are willing.

Below are some examples of the 60mm, the first at or near 1:1 and the second from further away.

I would vote for getting the 100 macro first and adding the 60 later if you like. The 100 will give you more working distance for macro underwater. With the 60, you have to get critters so close that you will often spook them away. The 60 will do better for fish portraits, but if really want to get the best macro shots, opt for the 100. Just my 2-cents worth.

You'll end up wanting to have both a midrange macro like the 60mm AND the 100mm lenses, so it's really just a question of which you get first.

OTOH, you might want to consider getting the 100mm and the Sigma 50mm, which is also 1:1 macro and is a great lens owned by many here (it's one of my favorite lenses). The advantage of the Sigma 50 is that it is going to be a better fish lens (with the 20D's crop factor), and yet will still work great on night dives and for the same subjects as you'd use the 60, thus arguably giving you more of a choice as to what to take on a given dive. Plus, with the money you save getting the Sigma 50 (instead of the Canon 60), you could probably go ahead and buy the 100mm now, too! :)

I'd go with the 60 first. It is more versatile and once you learn that lens, you will have no problem with the 105. They are both awesome lenses, though, and each has advantages over the other. Everything discussed above is all true and that is what you ultimately have to decide...what lens to use first. You have my opinion.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone for the feedback!

It is great to get feedback from someone who has actually used a device before you step in. From the comments I will probably start with the 60mm and the Fisheye focus light. Next trip is to Bikini and Rongelop. Bikini will be all about wide angle and Rongelop is not known as a Macro heaven so the 60mm should do well along with the wide depending on what we are seeing.

Happy Diving!
